To be taken aback by this request in Asda

Hi everyone.

I’ve just come back from doing the weekly food shop at Asda and have been a bit taken aback by an incident.

Whilst scanning my packet of cereal bars with the Scan and Go handsets, a colleague doing some online told me that she needed them for her online order and I would have to give them back to her. I admit to being a bit taken aback by this request and told her ‘no,’ and speaking to the colleague in a short tone.

I now feel a bit guilty as that probably means someone at home, who may not be able to come into the shop has missed out.

YABU - I should’ve given them over.
YANBU - I was first to them and therefore should’ve kept them in my shop.

On a side note, does anyone else get fed up with the amount of online shoppers at busy times in the supermarket? There was at least 15 trolleys going round today whilst it was busy with regular customers, and not the first time.

I'd have said no too. You had it first!

And yes, I am sick to the back teeth of being hustled out of the way by bloody pickers and their massive four-tier trollies. I know it's not their fault though – I asked one in my local Sainsbury's just before Christmas if they were on some kind of clock, because they just kept pushing in front of customers, and he said they have to pick 200 items an hour or they get reprimanded! Thankless job.

So they're reprimanding employees for things completely out of their control.
Nice.
No wonder stores are struggling to get workers.

AdoraBell · 13/01/2024 13:08

YANBU.

Can you clarify give it “back”? Presumably you just took it off the shelf, not from her trolley? Why do you think she said “back”?

Edited

Surely not?

No-one could be that entitled they think they could ever possibly be in the right taking from someone else's trolley! It is irrelevant if it customers or staff members trolley.

@Anon133 can you clarify?

Obviously you’re not unreasonable a to the bars, but to your aside — if those people were shopping for themselves with their 15 carts you’d be okay with it? It’s just that they’re getting someone else to do it you don’t like? They’re paying the same as you. You’re not better than then because you’re in the shop yourself.

No but OP picked them up first. If one of those other customers were in store and asked for something I'd already picked up then I'd say no. I can't imagine anyone would even do that.

YANBU OP

The poster wasn't arguing against that?

Tothemoonandbackx · 13/01/2024 12:10

They'd just have to substitute it with a box of cereal 😂😂😂

Or a mop, knowing some of the bizarre subs I have had

I would have to give them back to her - did you take it from her cart then?

Not everyone who does online shopping is lazy.

Some of us are disabled.

Just throwing that in there to further derail the thread.

Id have it only for the disabled and maybe elderly.

Pure laziness otherwise. 😉

CompletedNetflix · 13/01/2024 13:10

As if this happened. 🤣🤣🤣

Allergictoironing · 13/01/2024 13:11

gamerchick · 13/01/2024 12:53

I wouldn't have given her them either. The lazy buggers who shop at the click of a button can do without.

Bit mean there. I shop on line because I have a disability and hauling myself round the shop putting things in the trolley, then into my car, then out again at the other end & carrying it up the stairs would leave me fit for nothing for a couple of days.

Regarding who "selects" the substitutions, it's the computer system that does that NOT the picker. I've seen pickers say WTF when they've seen the "substitute" they have to put in the order.

and regarding the timing, most orders include some chilled and/or frozen food. If a delivery is due at 5pm they can't really pick it at 5am then leave it hanging around all that time. Plus there's limited storage in most branches for picked orders, as on line ordering has only been a thing since long after most of the stores were built (and add to the store's costs).

@gamerchick

are you ok?

ive 'known' you for years on here, but the last few days you've been quite different to usual. Genuinely, are you ok??

LOL at the faux concern for @gamerchick . 😆 How condescending and patronising!

Yeah, some people are bored on here today. 😆 Get a hobby people! Go for a walk. Do some volunteering! Anything to alleviate your boredom!

Go to asda

SpringViolet · 13/01/2024 13:12

Asda have a great policy of inclusive hiring and there are a few noticeable ND staff members at my local store, so I’d be wondering if it was a new ND staff member thinking it was perfectly reasonable to ask you if they could have what they needed after perhaps getting a bit panicky they didn’t have everything on their list.

It’s such an outrageous request that’s what I’d put my money on. Not trying to generalise ND people as rude but I could imagine my DS doing this if they were worried about getting into trouble (not that they would of course) and thought a nice, approachable looking lady might help.

I'd leave supermarkets to the disabled and maybe elderly, anyone who goes to just one shop rather than do the butcher, greengrocer, baker, off-licence, corner shop trip is just lazy.

What about the parents with 3 kids who get moaned at if they dare take them all shopping?

Anon133 · 13/01/2024 13:14

Yes off the shelf.

I was stood by the bars choosing (and probably blocking the online picker), and then I was asked.

Do you know, I was wondering when we'd start to discuss autism.

Youtoldmeonce · 13/01/2024 13:15

You are not alone thinking that there are too many staff doing customer online shopping.
A friend of mine works in Asda and with the amount of staff doing online shopping for delivery and click and collect she said it’s ridiculous and Asda need to decide if they are a supermarket or a warehouse

lunarleap · 13/01/2024 13:16

lunarleap · 13/01/2024 13:14

What about the parents with 3 kids who get moaned at if they dare take them all shopping?

Or covid.

Or have a 14 hour shift?

Or live miles away from shop?

Or are noise sensitive?

Or are redecorating their house this weekend so a bit busy?

MaybeSmaller · 13/01/2024 13:17

Of course not and you shouldn't feel an ounce of guilt about it. Supermarkets are first come first served, and you were first. How could it be any different?

Supermarkets really need to have a different system for their online orders, and at the very least they absolutely shouldn't have pickers ramming the aisles at peak shopping times. This is a knock on effect from the lockdowns where people switched en masse to online ordering and never switched back.

GreyCarpet · 13/01/2024 13:17

I think this takes people pleasing to a whole new level, tbh!

YireosDodeAver · 13/01/2024 13:19

Yanbu - the person sitting at home has no greater right to low-stock items than the person shopping for themselves.

lunarleap · 13/01/2024 13:19

Its fine OP they'll get a substitute cereal bar

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 13:21

No difference than another customer asking you, she was shopping by proxy.

I would have told her off for asking as she is basically telling you that you are not as important as another customer.

Depending on her attitude I may have also asked to speak to the manager in my best Karen voice!

Risun · 13/01/2024 13:21

@WagWoofWalkMeeoow I agree about gamerchick, she's usually one chilled dude. Wink
