For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

It's definitely 'bio-pic'. It's a contraction of 'biographical picture'.

It can still be that and pronounced 'bi-o pic'!

Have heard both, quite regularly.

I overheard a colleague A say another colleague B had camel toe. I asked colleague B if her foot was any better? I can't say anymore as it makes me cringe so bad.

You definitely didn't.

Who would ask anyone if their toe was better?

TheShellBeach · 13/01/2024 15:25

Zelda93 · 12/01/2024 07:04

Omg nooooo I thought it went shopping and imagined it skipping to market with a little wicker basket!! I am 47 and never realised this till now!

I've just had to ask DH to explain this to me.
Then I asked why the littlest piggy said Wee Wee Wee and he pointed out it was happy, so was saying Whee Whee Whee.

If you didn't know the history, you would just as reasonably ask why the UK claims some islands of the coast of Argentina.

Not as reasonable a question, no.

TheShellBeach · 13/01/2024 15:30

That a lot of the posters on here think the REPLY button quotes the post they're responding to.

You see this all the time in threads. It's especially annoying when it's the OP doing it.

TheShellBeach · 13/01/2024 15:26

Why wouldn't you?

Agreed. I wouldn't think twice about asking how someone's foot or toe was. I might take the precaution of looking up a medical condition I hadn't heard of, though - e.g. camel toe. Grin

Well it certainly is pronounced that way by some people, but it's still wrong!

I used to pronounce the word 'hyperbole' as 'hyper-bowl' and I've heard other people do it too, does that mean that I was actually right all along? Of course not.

Yes it can certainly make a thread very confusing, but I don't blame people for making that assumption - why that button is at the bottom of every post, I do not know!

For the Aussies in the group - adult friend insisted the swagman in Waltzing Matilda was called Andy..

'And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled' etc

That's funny! I had no idea that he sang "billy boiled"

And the poster who said someone thought Celine Dion's name was Via Satellite 🤣🤣🤣

sueelleker · 13/01/2024 16:07

Funkyslippers Yes. Here's the first verse. A billy was a billycan Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a Coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
"You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me".

Because that's where it's always been, I think? - it predates the quote function which people (I assume newer users) are now confusing it with.

AvaMarie · 13/01/2024 16:56

It might be better if 'reply' was just labelled 'post' imho.

It might be better if 'reply' was just labelled 'post' imho.

Or if they just put Quote back where it used to be (where Reply now is).

They pull down
So if you've had a poo drama with baby, pull them down not over the head

I don't have DC so don't ask me why I have retained this information but can't remember my computer password

Gosh I've had 4 dc and didn't know that! I thought they just gave more space to get the head through easier.

GreenAppleCrumble · 13/01/2024 17:04

I don’t get the ‘miniseries’ one. I could believe it if one person was thrown by that term, but how are so many people so mystified by it when it was routinely written as ‘mini-series’ for many, many years? It’s not much of a leap (though it compounds my belief that the gradual removal of hyphens does no one any favours). And where are you seeing it written down so often?!

Do not get the point a pp was making about the letter w though? I know they didn’t have a w in Latin, but the Latin word ‘equus’ doesn’t take its ‘w’ sound from the double u; it takes it from the q (pronounced ‘kw’).

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2024 17:04

I just made a thread in Site Stuff about the reply thing.

peakygold · 13/01/2024 17:17

25 years ago we caught the overnight nightmarish ferry to Santander in Northern Spain, and I thought the shop named 'Santander' in the high street was tourist information 😂

Mid 40’s former English teacher, only quite recently realised that the phrase “captive audience”, eg in a conference room or in a car, meant captive as in held in one place and not enthralled, as in captivated 😳😬

Blimey! Same here! Just learned that. Had to google to check as just didn't believe you!

I'm nearly 60 and a vociferous reader!

Another lightbulb moment was on again on here, when I found out registration numbers are different colours depending whether they're the front or back of the car. My god what a pile on I got for not knowing that!!

Guessing you meant ‘voracious’ reader 😂(sorry!)

Why was it cold?

Same reason our teas/coffees go cold - running around after everyone else!!
I have just realised this as @RheaRend posted.
