For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

It to me until my late 40s to realise AKA stood for Also known as

Why I hadn't worked this out was beyond me before I worked it out????

scalt · 11/01/2024 22:53

Not an adult realisation, but I remember being confused at the age of six about the game “pin the tail on the donkey”, and whoever gets it closest to the right place wins, which I had heard about before the party.

I thought that was it, and it was an easy game to win! 😂Nothing had been said about not being able to see, and I thought it was really unfair when I was blindfolded. (I was first!)

It took me a while to realise that a 'miniseries' is a mini series. I was pronouncing it in my head as 'min-is-eries' and thinking 'what the hell is that?'.

Same. Luckily I'd never said it out loud.

Was also far older than I should have been when I realised where the word "fortnight" came from.

Driving through ROI and wondering why there were SO many roads leading to 'Amach', thought this town must be pretty accessible from everywhere before copping on that 'amach' in Irish means 'exit' 🤣 ( I am Irish which makes this worse 🙈😆)

A friend thought gwesty was a really popular hotel chain in Wales until she realised the signs were bilingual and gwesty is hotel Grin

MistressoftheDarkSide · 11/01/2024 22:58

Hang on - where DOES the word fortnight come from?

Now I know I don't know, I really need to know !!!

I’m Welsh and got caught out by this before…when I said I would meet somebody in the car park of Hotel Gwesty. FFS 😂

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong can't help but add to this - "arctus" means bear. Bears live in the arctic. Antarctic means no bears.

Shock

When I was a kid, my dad made us an amazing wooden sledge which had metal runners with measurements on them.He worked at a place that sold fabric by the metre.
It was only 30+ years later when I bought a sledge for my kids and it had no measurements on the runners did I realised they were never for measuring the distance you went on the sledge.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 11/01/2024 23:02

@Terfosaurus

Doh! Of course!

Thank you - I can relax now lol !!

mondler · 11/01/2024 23:02

I was in my 30s when I looked down at my computer keyboard and suddenly realised why it was called a 'qwerty' keyboard. I'd never realised it was just the first 6 letters 😂

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 11/01/2024 23:03

Years ago before WiFi was a full blown thing I remember seeing "WiFi lounge" thinking it was pronounced "wiffy".
I remember thinking that place sounds cool, it sounds like a tiki/boho kind of place.

Tuna are really big fish, not tin sized. Was in my 30s when I realised this, in a restaurant when someone ordered a tuns steak. I mean, I know you don't get intact whole tunas in tins, but my brain went "Sardines in a tin - small fish" ergo all fish in tins is small - other than salmon of course - I'd seen salmon. Never seen a whole tuna.

I am a card carrying numpty.

Same for me! I was 28 when I realised that tuna are big fish!
(I got served tuna steak at a dinner party).

on pronouncing things wrong - when I was a teenager and Hanson’s first album came out, I thought it was called Middle of Now-here rather no-where 🫣

I was 43 years old when I found out red, yellow and green peppers are only different colours as they are at different stages of ripeness. And not necessarily different types of pepper. Like tomatoes (which I knew ). Hence green peppers are so bitter as they are not ripe.

That recycled toilet paper is made from paper that we put in our blue wheely bin for recycling.

For some reason i was convinced the manufacturers were down in the sewers collecting clumps of soggy used toilet paper to recycle into new rolls.

Im all for the environment and being green but for years i avoided recycled toilet paper. Shudder.

Made me giggle

I didn't realise pull up nappies rip off so every nappy change I was pulling them down. Very messy with a wriggly baby. Couldn't understand why people thought they were so good. Doh!

StHilarion · 11/01/2024 23:15

My friend told me that a friend of hers worked at the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. I was not overly interested and thought it was a private financial company in the city. Many Many years later the penny dropped that it was HSBC

"This little piggy went to market", it wasn't going shopping...

😧😱😰

Hm are you sure about that? I'm rethinking the whole rhyme now. I know most nursery rhymes mean something completely obscure but If a little piggy can have roast beef then why can't it go shopping?
