For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

Well I’m 66 and I didn’t know that until now 😂😂

I don’t get the ‘miniseries’ one. I could believe it if one person was thrown by that term, but how are so many people so mystified by it when it was routinely written as ‘mini-series’ for many, many years? It’s not much of a leap (though it compounds my belief that the gradual removal of hyphens does no one any favours). And where are you seeing it written down so often?!

Do not get the point a pp was making about the letter w though? I know they didn’t have a w in Latin, but the Latin word ‘equus’ doesn’t take its ‘w’ sound from the double u; it takes it from the q (pronounced ‘kw’).

It's on the streaming sites often. It seems to vary from mini series to miniseries, I read it as min-eye-sir-ees just didnt connect it at all.

Same reason our teas/coffees go cold - running around after everyone else!!
I have just realised this as @RheaRend posted.

Except in the story the bears all go off for a walk because all of their porridge is too hot, so that doesn't really make sense..

meanjeanbean · 13/01/2024 17:33

OMG! I always pictured a little piggy with a wicker basket skipping off to pick up some bits! 😂

I spent years thinking it was public hair and not pubic. I have no idea why other than my hearing is a bit shite!

Me too!! I was probably in my 30s when I realised my mistake!

OMG!!! Penny only just dropped!! 😂

Cyb3rg4l · 13/01/2024 17:36

It does mean bear but it is referring to the northernmost constellation , the bear constellation in the sky, not the bears on the ground ….. I really wish it did though : )

I found out recently that electric cars are automatic rather than manual as they don't have gear boxes.

Errr, all autos have a gearbox.

Electric cars don't have a gear box which is why they are automatic. The battery gives constant power so no gears needed

I just made a thread in Site Stuff about the reply thing.

It will be at least the 5th one and HQ have made it clear they don't care. They won't even acknowledge it's a issue despite loads of examples of threads that are incomprehensible

Driving through ROI and wondering why there were SO many roads leading to 'Amach', thought this town must be pretty accessible from everywhere before copping on that 'amach' in Irish means 'exit' 🤣 ( I am Irish which makes this worse 🙈😆)

I did this exact thing in Wales. I thought all roads led to Gwysanthau. I think it means services...🙈

About what? You haven't quoted anyone.

Tryingtobedifferent · 13/01/2024 17:51

I thought Beirut was just a slang term for a rough area, until I found out it's an actual place 🙈

newmumcrazytired · 13/01/2024 09:03

I only learnt how to say ‘unfathomable’ a few years back and that it wasn’t ‘un - fat - hom - able’! It was a word I’d read but not heard 🤦‍♀️

I don't know where the difference between lament and lamentable comes from. Apparently very important to serious actors.

Sleepytiredyawn · 13/01/2024 17:56

Falkenburg · 11/01/2024 22:27

There is a chap on a local group I'm in that communicates by email and his email address is 'Welsh The Rapist @ XXXXX.com' which I thought was pretty obnoxious although he seems a very nice man.

One day I realised it was
'Welsh Therapist @XXXXX.com' 😩

Thank goodness I never said anything as he would have thought I was mad!

😂🤣😂. Maybe you should have said something, it’s not really daft if you, others may read it that way too, he would probably be mortified.

Gooneviv · 13/01/2024 17:58

I thought ursa meant bear. Arctus means pole?

Many people think there's an annual music festival in Beirut, rather than Bayreuth and every year hundreds of disappointed motor racing fans end up in Nuremberg while looking for the Nürburgring.

Lament is a verb. Lamentable is an adjective describing something that you might be lamenting about.

Don't get your actor point.

I was 43 years old when I found out red, yellow and green peppers are only different colours as they are at different stages of ripeness. And not necessarily different types of pepper. Like tomatoes (which I knew ). Hence green peppers are so bitter as they are not ripe.

What???!!!!

I thought ursa meant bear. Arctus means pole?

Ursa is Latin, arktos is Greek. Both mean bear.

Mirabai · 13/01/2024 18:07

Gooneviv · 13/01/2024 17:58

I thought ursa meant bear. Arctus means pole?

Arktos means all of the following: bear, pole star, and the constellations now known as Ursa.

After watching Fawlty Towers for years I still call grapefruit 'gralefrit'

Me too!

HarryGrotter · 13/01/2024 18:19

Only at Christmas when I was whinging I couldn’t fit the tall wine glasses in the dishwasher did someone on YouTube have a video where you have a plastic clip either side of the top tray to lower it down. I went with dh to investigate and lo and behold ours does! Only a dishwasher for 20 some years 🤦‍♀️
