For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

"This little piggy went to market", it wasn't going shopping...

Wtf??

Chubbywubba · 13/01/2024 20:35

@TheShellBeach

I'm nearly 70 but I only discovered last week that bleach doesn't work if you add it to hot water.

What is this I’m reading 😨😨😨 I’ve only ever used bleach with hot water to mop the floors!!! Does it not still kill the germs??!!? I may have to revisit the last 40 years

letmeeatinpeace · 13/01/2024 20:36

When I first came to the UK I literally thought you’re meant to pronounce the TH in Thames.

And used to say ‘Lychester’ Square…

Also had no idea what a ‘quid’ was.

Ccc223 · 13/01/2024 20:37

You are not the only one!🙈

waterdusky · 13/01/2024 20:37

When we went pumpkin picking the farmer told us the orange ones were in the field nearest to us and the pink and blue ones were in the field next to us. I spent ages looking for the field with pink and blue pumpkins...

Was way too old when I realised that crimes against minors was so heinous because they were children and not, as I thought, large burly gentlemen who worked underground in coal mines.....

Some of these are too funny! I LOL at this.

Janicchoplin · 13/01/2024 20:38

That's OK. I'm tired and read it to mean this is amish country 🤦‍♀️

Janicchoplin · 13/01/2024 20:40

May need to educate me as well. What?

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 13/01/2024 20:08

I found out recently that "biopic" is short for "biographical picture", so it should be pronounced bio-pick. I was reading it as by-op-ick.

It is still pronounced bi-op-if though? Isn't it?!

There must be farms out there with more dogs than sheep 😂

Edited

And probably as many bewildered children too!

Could only find one Unicorn

ensayers · 13/01/2024 20:51

I'd never been told any stories about unicorns - having magical powers etc, but I knew what they looked like from pictures. Also I'd seen real life horses and at the zoo, rhinos with their horns, so why wouldn't I believe that some hybrid of the two was real? I was mid 20s when the unicorns-aren't-real penny dropped :/

ToWhitToWhoo · 13/01/2024 20:51

Quite a few songs, where I only found out I'd been mishearing them when I read the lyrics. E.g. 'Forever in Blue Jeans' is just that, and not a song about a trendy spiritual leader called Reverend Blue Jeans. Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Boxer' had squandered his resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, not a pocketful of marbles. And in Mud's song 'Tiger Feet', the lines

'Alright, that's right, that's right, that's right
That's right I really love your tiger light
That's neat, that's neat, that's neat, that's neat
I really love your tiger feet, I really love your tiger feet.

are not

'Alright, that's right, that's right, that's right
That's right I know your dire life.
Not me, not me, not me, not me
I know your diary, I know your diary'

which I interpreted as meaning that her diary was full of dates with other men.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/01/2024 20:53

I wouldn't think twice about asking how someone's foot or toe was.

Sure, maybe their foot, like if it was broken.

But really? A colleague would tell another colleague that someone had 'camel toe' and they'd then solicitously ask them how their toe was? Sure.

I'm nearly 70 but I only discovered last week that bleach doesn't work if you add it to hot water.

That's not true!

It may actually work better (hot water speeds up the disinfectant properties of bleach). It can be more dangerous as the fumes can be spread more easily eg if the water is steaming but that's it.

I think the confusion may arise over incorrect storage of bleach ie making sure it's not stored at too high temperatures.

No. I'm sorry, I'm still struggling with it myself! Sad Bi-oh-pic

I passed my test first time and had been driving for a number of years with no incident before I realised the signs for a bendy road were supposed to replicate which way the bends went. Now approaching 40 years on the road with no points.

and the more of them the worse the bend. My husband told me this in 2023 . Never knew!

TheShellBeach · 13/01/2024 15:09

Eh?

Presumably 'Jekyll and Hyde".

EarringsandLipstick · 13/01/2024 21:07

And it might kill you. Bleach and hot water creates chlorine gas which is deadly. Only ever use it with cold water.

This isn't true either.

It is the case that you need to be more careful how you use bleach with hot / warm water - but for example bleach in warm baths is a recommended dermatological treatment.

I think it may that people are thinking about the active ingredient breaking down, meaning in healthcare settings, where it's important to kill bacteria or viruses, it's not effective. For household cleaning, it will still work well.

Driving through ROI and wondering why there were SO many roads leading to 'Amach', thought this town must be pretty accessible from everywhere before copping on that 'amach' in Irish means 'exit'

Similarly, I drove from Berlin up to the Baltic coast and wondered where the huge town of Ausfahrt was and why I'd never heard of it.

And a colleague, who asked for help from a copper. He couldn't find his car abut it was on Eingangstrasse.

.... One way street!

Brilliant. There was an infamous family summer holiday drive from Barcelona airport up the coast to the town where we were staying, where my mother insisted my father try to pull over on the motorway 'as all these signs point to Sortida, and I can't find that place on the map!'

I though there was a dating app called OLD. Wanted to check it out as I too am old. How I laughed when I realised it was just on line dating.
