Drink wine in the bath that is? Watching a film and the main character just had a glass of red wine whilst having a bath.

I'm 50 and I think I gave it a go once maybe 20 years ago, decided that the combo of alcohol and a hot bath was terrible and have never done it since.

YANBU: of course no one does this other than in films, what a terrible idea

YABU: wine in the bath is one of the main joys in life, you're missing out you pleb

*"I have a really nifty over bath shelf thing that has a holder for a wine glass, phone and book. I don’t even need to hold the book/tablet."

How do you change page/scroll phone screen with wet hands?

Speaking for myself, I have a small towel draped over the edge of the bath and just blot my hand before turning the page. Of course, I would not take a valuable, antique or irreplaceable book into the bath.

For films and tv programmes I just prop my tablet on a small chair next to the bath and watch it from there.

TeaToastIsAll · 12/01/2024 16:52

@CookStrait 😂and those who sit on a sofa in the middle of the room, knowing they're at risk (cue stalker/demonic being creeping up behind).

TeaToastIsAll · 12/01/2024 16:57

@LaurieStrode I do the ipad thing and have it in the room, set up before I get in. It's the other activities I wouldn't do; a pp ate a roast dinner in there...I do not wish to imagine that! 😂🤢

For me the biggest issue, I'd alone in the house is, do I bring the bottle with me and risk it getting warm, or do I take the risk of running down the stairs soaking in a towel and run the risk of breaking my neck.

If I'm alone I bring up the wine in a wine cooler so i can have a second glass (no more though, as the combo of wine and heat can make me quite tipsy!) If DH is home I will call him on my phone for a top up!

Lovingitallnow · 12/01/2024 17:03

@Makeupalley you see a key concern would be if you spontaneously died. How would it look to the parish if you were found in the bath with a bottle of wine vs if you were found dead at the bottoms of the stairs naked on the way to get the the wine. See also concerns about driving eating Jaffa cakes- the empty packet might be explained by a picnic lunch etc but the choccie fingers would give it away.

We had an inflatable hot tub. Had fizz in that a few times.

I put my iPad in a ziplock bag if using it in the bath. Then I can handle it with wet hands.

CatamaranViper · 12/01/2024 17:08

Yeah most Friday nights!

I have a bath while DH cooks dinner. I have a glass of wine, do a face mask & hair mask, read my book etc then I come downstairs, eat dinner and finish the bottle of wine.

It's a fab way to unwind.

pinktransit · 12/01/2024 17:10

Thanks to this thread I now have to go and run a bath and pour a glass of wine. I love a wine in the bath, with an audio book as I tend to drop real books in the water.
When I smoked I would quite often have a ciggie in the bath too. In fact, my last ever cigarette was in the bath on a Monday night in mid January 2007. It was wonderful.

Hahaha I hadn't thought of that! Well I suppose I'd be found out for the lush I am! And it's not a bad way to go...

I tired years ago was terrible, I can't stand the thought of cooking while drinking wine as I only drink wine when I can relax so after dinner when everything is done

Same here. If I was cooking and drinking wine, I'd down tools and order a takeaway.

Serious question - People who have books/ ipads/ phones in the bath- how do you stop them getting wet?

By just... not submerging them in the water?!

You're holding the book or device in your dry hands. When you are ready to get out of the bath, or want to do your actual washing of yourself, you place said book/device on whatever dry surface is convenient and reachable. You might get a tiny splash on them but nothing major. I've been reading in the bath for about 40 years now, since I was a small child, and I've only ever dropped a book in the bath once, when I was startled by a spider.

Also, loads of devices are water resistant now and have been for a good few years. Both my iPhone and my Kindle can be fully submerged in water without being damaged and neither of them are new models!

'You're holding the book or device in your dry hands. When you are ready to get out of the bath, or want to do your actual washing of yourself, you place said book/device on whatever dry surface is convenient and reachable.'

You see I couldn't do this with anything handheld. I like to relax with my arms in the water. Now watching a movie, I can do.

Baths are boring. Much prefer a shower.

They're only boring without a glass of wine and a book.

Ilovelurchers · 12/01/2024 17:24

I used to love a wine in the bath, but to be fair there wasn't anywhere I DIDN'T love a wine! (Sober now)

I used to put it in a mug rather than a glass - less likely to shatter if it slipped off or something.

If I was fortunate enough to be someone who could just have the occasional relaxing drink, many of those would definitely be in the bath.

In fact, I used to know a guy who had previously had issues with alcohol and was now sober (we all thought) but he confided in me that he still very occasionally had a glass of really nice white wine, in the bath, with a new biography he had been looking forward to reading or something - (but he preferred it if everyone thought he didn't drink at all so they didn't pressure him about it at social events) - and that that was his idea of Heaven!

Xmasbaby11 · 12/01/2024 17:25

My fancy wooden bath shelf has a special place for a wine glass that holds the stem! But I don’t usually drink alcohol in the bath, just a cup of tea. I have my phone and kindle. It’s a wonderful way to relax for me! We have a big stand alone bath so it’s really deep. I’m always surprised when I go on holiday that ordinary baths are so small and not v comfortable when you’re used to more space!

OhmygodDont · 12/01/2024 17:25

I hate baths. Dh tried the whole candles and cold wine on tap but I just sat there drinking wine bored out my brain.

Now a glass of wine in a long hot shower by all means. We have a ledge just far enough away from the water I can move to, sip a drink and back to a hot water massage.

Ah, I see - fair enough. Weirdly, I can never really get into watching a film or TV in the bath. I don't know why because I can happily listen to a podcast or an audiobook. Perhaps I have a subconscious nagging doubt that the actors can somehow peer out of the screen and see me naked 🤔

littleburn · 12/01/2024 17:29

I just can't get on with baths. I find them weirdly depressing and I don't know why! I'll have one if I'm very cold and need to heat through, but that's it. It's just not a pleasure for me. I'd happily curl up in bed with wine and a book though 😊

😂 that's made me laugh. I haven't thought of it that way. I'm going to have to ensure extra bubbles now (soap not wine that is). 😳

Oh do all of those not liking baths take them under bright lights?
LED candles are a game changer. Or at the very least an Alexa bulb, you can turn the brightness right down then, and turn it to a nice warm colour. I sometimes have it red; I do not appreciate dh's jokes about that one!

And floating mood lights are quite nice too.
