Just wondered how others would feel if their DH of nearly 30 years whom they’d raised three kids with decided in his late 50s to get both his upper arms completely tattooed? Pictures are a skull, a load of roses and a snake.

OP posts:
CeeCeeBloom · 10/01/2024 16:37

I'd probably like it, I love tattoos.

Beezknees · 10/01/2024 16:37

I'd be fine with it, but I have over 50 tattoos myself so probably not the best person to ask!

OldTinHat · 10/01/2024 16:37

Wouldn't bother me. But know this is just the start - you never just have one tattoo...!

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/01/2024 16:39

Late 50s is a bit old for a mid-life crisis isn't it? Isn't it more likely that he's been thinking about it forever and finally got it done (hence the old fashioned style)?

If my DH got it done without telling me, I'd be upset at our lack of communication, but the OP hasn't said that's what's happened.

So, if DH came to me saying that's what he wants to get done, I wouldn't particularly feel anything. Maybe a bit surprised, and also worried that they'd look crap perhaps? I think I'd want to be reassured that he was going to a good artist to get them done.

enjoyingscience · 10/01/2024 16:41

He’s perfectly entitled to get them and you are perfectly entitled to hate them and not find him attractive any more.

If the latter is true then you need to act so you don’t end up spending the rest of your life with someone you don’t respect or find attractive.

santalisticle · 10/01/2024 16:41

I don't like tattoos myself, I think they are usually a bit tacky and in lots of cases seem to be making up for some personal inner deficiency. Judgemental? I suppose so, sue me!

If my DH did this at his age late 40's I'd assume he was having a rather extreme midlife crisis.

80skid · 10/01/2024 16:41

Obviously his body his choice and all that. What's his next one, a mermaid with her boobs out next to an anchor? A wolf howling at the moon? Maybe a teardrop or ACAB on his knuckles? While I totally think it's up to him, I would also be disappointed in the cliched choices he's made for the artwork Confused
No offence intended to anyone with the same tattoos as OP's DH. Your body your choice, and that is why variety is the spice of life Smile

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 10/01/2024 16:43

I'm open to having a tattoo, but I just haven't thought of something that I'd want indelibly inked on to my skin forever. DH has said he doesn't like them, but if I wanted to get one it's my decision.

My Dad, however, absolutely hates them (even though he was in the forces for years and everyone else had them!) and it's mainly because of him I haven't got one recklessly before! I wouldn't want to upset him clearly a Daddy's girl!

Bingo card for "tacky" 😂

waterSpider · 10/01/2024 16:45

Think I'd suggest starting with a small one first --- hard to know how people will take the (small amount of) pain and the healing process.

Then say you'll be getting your nipples pierced soon after.

longtompot · 10/01/2024 16:46

My dh is anti tattoos but I wanted to have one for my 50th. 2 years down the line, still yet to get it, but when I do it will be no bigger than an old 50p and on the inside of my ankle so discrete. He has mentioned he would like to get the same, but I said I'd rather have it just for me. But up to him.

Ilikebacon · 10/01/2024 16:46

I’d leave my DH. Might sound drastic, but I despise tattoos and find them completely unattractive.
if he had two full arms then it would give me the ick.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/01/2024 16:49

I'd be surprised and not very impressed, especially at skulls and roses - bit of a cliché. Dh was a history teacher and has always said he fancies getting a tattoo of Harold with the arrow in his eye from the Bayeux tapestry. I'd quite like that one, though I'm not generally a fan of tattoos really.

MissusKay · 10/01/2024 16:50

His body, his choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you have bigger issues you need to deal with really

Mothership4two · 10/01/2024 16:50

TBH I would hate it on my DH. But it would be incredibly out of character for him.

DillDanding · 10/01/2024 16:53

I’d be embarrassed.

SheFliesLikeABirdInTheSky · 10/01/2024 16:53

How would anyone cover their arms in tats all at once? Would take many months.

bringincrazyback · 10/01/2024 16:53

I like tattoos, but that's a lot. Think I'd be a bit fed up if my DH did this out of the blue even though his body/choice etc.

Longdarkcloud · 10/01/2024 16:54

I loathe tattoos and they make me cringe or even shudder. I’ve seen only one I thought felt tasteful and that was a very realistic one of a cat’s face (Guardian pics, I think). What I feel Is strange, apart from the aesthetics, is that the bearer is unable to have a clear view, excepting a mirror. It’s their close friends and family and colleagues who must view them day in and day out.
Unless one is a member of a small group who are vying for total body coverage etc, where there is a competitive element, what’s the point ? Why do these people want to strut around displaying cartoon style illustrations, generally of grotesque creatures and things, which fade and become even less attractive with age?

The point is, I like them on myself. It's as simple as that. Up to me what I do with my body.

BakewellGin1 · 10/01/2024 17:02

I don't think I would give it a second thought.

DH has several which were well thought out over a period of time and designed/applied well.

He would never pass judgement on my hair colour, clothing etc so I have no right to be judgemental of his choices either.

I think there are a few over the top reactions such as I would leave etc I mean if a female came on here saying DH was considering leaving her over a new tattoo, hair cut, weight everyone would be saying he was a dick and it's her body her choice and so on

Tiredalwaystired · 10/01/2024 17:04

I’d rather people got their tattoos later in life to be honest. Nothing worse that seeing a previously taut tattoo go saggy.

His body his choice, I say. I’ve got scarring after surgery and having never wanted a tattoo until now. I’m now considering how I can incorporate the scar into a tattoo to make it look interesting. I’m 50.

Newtrix · 10/01/2024 17:07

I get everyone has bodily autonomy but this would really turn me off my dh if he did this. Same way I wouldn't have a pixie hair cut because he finds longer hair more attractive.

pictoosh · 10/01/2024 17:09

I wouldn't mind if he wanted to get his arms tattooed but I wouldn't be overly impressed by snakes, roses and skulls. I'd accept them but I'd think they were naff.

santalisticle · 10/01/2024 17:10

@Beezknees Well I think they are tacky, I'd never say to anyone's face except perhaps DH but they are not very classy that is for sure.
