Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

@baileybrosbuildingandloan 😄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Oh, well done

In my school there’s someone who has HOTMUM as a plate

I have one - just a number and my initials so not of any great value.

It's on it's 4th car now. It does save me having to learn a new numberplate each time. Unlike @orangegato 's neighbour, I just transfer when I buy the car so no one would know if it was brand new or not unless they are up to date with model styling.

You cannot be bothered to learn a new numberplate??

NoThanksymm · 11/01/2024 07:35

Your partner should respect your preference for your plates.

Oakbeam · 11/01/2024 07:57

I know someone who transferred the plate over from his grandad’s car when he died. They were very close and it was something to remember him by.

The reg is now obviously a lot older than the car he drives and I have wondered if people seeing it have tried to make the digits mean something.

Olindia · 11/01/2024 08:06

I didn’t realise they were so tacky! I have one and so does everyone I know (pretty much) they are very common round here and it’s a very ‘country’ area, they are mostly pickups and landys.

im not set either way on them (I honestly didn’t realise it’s such a thing) but my husband got me mine and ours match and are pretty funny as it is our name in full (short surname with 1s as Ls) and then his business split in half between the two cars) I can’t really explain it better without putting it but they are funny and we always get a laugh.

I do like seeing them, there is an Audi round here with one letter and number and I like seeing bentleys with one number etc.

But like a poster above I can’t judge anyone on what they spend because my horses cost me a fortune and surely one could argue that that is a waste of money? (my husband, my husband argues that).

Fae1234 · 11/01/2024 08:23

Yep they are awful and tacky. My MIL bought my partner them and he has had to pretend he lost them with the hope she won't buy more. I think it's very odd if your partner buys you something you specifically said you don't want.

You can’t lose a car registration!

Stressedoutmammy · 11/01/2024 08:27

It does make remembering your number plate for pay & display parking machines much easier!! 🤣

camelfinger · 11/01/2024 03:58

Some are useful as it forewarns you to give that driver a wide berth. The subtle ones seem a bit pointless to me. I think in the past it was a status symbol, but not really any longer. I’d be pissed off to receive one as a gift.

This is really odd, why would you give me a wide berth?

I may have a private reg but I also took and advanced driving course and was a professional driver for 15 years. If anyone needs a wide berth it's you, basing your decisions on people's number plates Confused

ChocolateMudcake · 11/01/2024 08:48

I think the biggest issue here is you have said you don’t want one. If he said he wanted to buy you a new car for your birthday and you said no thanks, he shouldn’t buy it. Or perfume. Or lingerie. Or a specific gift idea. You said no. That should be the end of discussion.

Your reasoning doesn’t actually matter. If you said no, that’s it. Move on, give him some other suggestions maybe instead.

Yes you can! Sell the car and forget to remove the plate or let the retention cert expire are two ways off the top of my head.

sondot · 11/01/2024 08:51

Also if you have put it on a second hand car that has spent a certain about of time untaxed prior to you owning it you can come up against an issue on selling it where you have to do it the old fashioned way through the post. Numerous private regs are lost this way as the owner goes to trade in or sell the car and finds out they can't remove the reg there and then online. You then have to decide whether to wait weeks for it all to go through or just let it go and continue with the car sale. Very common.

Cupcakedarling · 11/01/2024 08:52

My family member has a somewhat personalised number plate. The original car it was originally on was built in 1934. It was handed down to her mum ant first and then she became the opener and will be given to one of her children when they’re older. It’s a piece of history and she has photos of the first car it was on. People might presume its tacky but its become a very sentimental piece.

fussychica · 11/01/2024 09:03

DH has one. I bought it for a special birthday. It wasn't expensive and he loves it.

Initials, last two digits of date of birth and three letters all the same. Definitely not braggy as our car is newer than the plate suggests. Totally unforgettable which is great when you're getting on.

DuchessPotato · 11/01/2024 09:19

Each to their own, but I think they’re totally naff.

BIossomtoes · 11/01/2024 08:25

You can’t lose a car registration!

You’re correct in that you can’t lose it, but you can let the (can’t remember the correct term) right to use it lapse, so then it’s no longer yours.
When you acquire it you have to either assign it to a vehicle or you,pay to retain the right to use it, which has to be renewed every so often (think it might be 3 years?), and if you don’t do that it lapses and you lose that right so it’s no longer your plate

Ive explained that in a very mealy mouthed way but hopefully you get the gist!

Veggievic · 11/01/2024 09:20

mine cost £180 and I’ve had it about 15 years.
it is hiding the age of my car by about 5 years as the model ran for a while. People always know it’s me too, which I quite like as have lots of local friends!
I wouldn’t go out and specifically buy one now but I’ve just kept moving it over as I’ve replaced my car.

MightyFishwife · 11/01/2024 09:22

Personalised number plates are one of the most reliable metrics for being able to tell whether someone will park/drive like an entitled wanker IME. Often seen on massive 4x4s in urban/suburban areas too.

Heidi75 · 11/01/2024 09:32

Honestly? I think they are tacky and scream 'I have more money than sense' Particularly the ones that try to spell words with letters and then those that print them with incorrect, illegal spacing, each to their own but to me they just shout I'm a bit of a prat

Comedycook · 11/01/2024 09:37

I think people are kidding themselves when they say they didn't get it to brag....this might not have been your conscious thought process, but of course when we buy things, we are subconsciously trying to convey a certain image to others. We do this with clothes, bags, cars etc. You can say oh I got a certain item because it makes me happy but part of that happiness comes from the image you are wanting to portray to others.

Absolutely not. I'm autistic and couldn't give a flying fuck what autistic think of my purchases. I'm not trying to convey anything I juts buy shit I like. One day that was a number plate and another day it was a sonic the hedgehog squishmallow. I bought them for me

No, obviously not all purchases...but lots of what we buy, we are actually buying to impress others. We're not actively thinking, oh I'm going to buy this top so people think I look great and admire me, but subconsciously that is the thought process. We buy things we think look nice and part of that is about how we present ourselves to others. It's why we dress up for a night out but if we're home alone, we're more casual.

No really, when I said my brain doesn't work like that, I meant it. You repeating yourself won't make any difference.

What are they bragging about?
