Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

No, obviously not all purchases...but lots of what we buy, we are actually buying to impress others. We're not actively thinking, oh I'm going to buy this top so people think I look great and admire me, but subconsciously that is the thought process. We buy things we think look nice and part of that is about how we present ourselves to others. It's why we dress up for a night out but if we're home alone, we're more casual.

No really, when I said my brain doesn't work like that, I meant it. You repeating yourself won't make any difference.

Obviously I don't know your individual thought process but I'd say probably majority of people make purchases with this at the back of their mind...I mean,me included. Like for example, I put a gradual fake tan cream on my face every day. I could say I do this for myself, I mean it does make me feel better about myself but part of that is because of how I look to others I suppose. If I was the only person left in the world, would I still put fake tan on...hell no!

I think people are kidding themselves when they say they didn't get it to brag....this might not have been your conscious thought process, but of course when we buy things, we are subconsciously trying to convey a certain image to others. We do this with clothes, bags, cars etc. You can say oh I got a certain item because it makes me happy but part of that happiness comes from the image you are wanting to portray to others.

Yes, I bought my 17 year old car just for the number plate so I can brag about it... 🙄

Willyoujustbequiet · 11/01/2024 10:11

I think they are tacky/common but each to their own.

I didn't say every purchase....but of course many many purchases we make, we make in order to present ourselves to others in a certain way. This isn't controversial.

I'm sorry that you feel you need to do this, but please, we are not all the same.

You are right you do not know my thought process but at the point where I told you I don't give a flying fuck that was a strong indication that I don't care. Instead of accepting that you posted again, and again, to try and explain to me how it works.

That is absolutely not how my brain operates.

Not controversial? For many it's not even true.

Catsmere · 11/01/2024 10:19

Some I've seen that made me smile, some make me roll my eyes, but the price is just ridiculous. An ordinary plate in my state in Australia is $137. A custom plate is at least $545.

And again...this is about impressing people isn't it. Why do you give a dam if a random person can see how old your car is?

SocksMcR · 11/01/2024 10:25

Me and my husband do that 😂 It's just a bit of good natured ribbing but people sometimes get reeeeaaaaallllyy uptight about it. Which just makes it funnier tbh ..

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 10:21

Not really. You can't put a plate on thats newer than you car, only the same year or older. Some are dateless plates but even still, a 2005 fiestas look old compared with a 2020 fiesta. For anyone at all bothered about the age of your car though, they can juts look up the reg and it will tell them anyway .

Heidi75 · 11/01/2024 09:32

Honestly? I think they are tacky and scream 'I have more money than sense' Particularly the ones that try to spell words with letters and then those that print them with incorrect, illegal spacing, each to their own but to me they just shout I'm a bit of a prat

So how loudly does my cost £100 15 years ago scream more money 🤣

Jayne35 · 11/01/2024 10:29

DH had one when we met so he got me one as a gift which is the same first three digits then my initials, so we have matching plates. I am not a braggy showy off person and nor is he, we just like them and both our cars are newer than the plates suggest.

If you don't want one then say so, it's a waste of money if you don't want it.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 11/01/2024 10:30

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 10:21

Believe me there’s no disguising that my 2015 dodgem with a 1995 plate is exactly that 😂

sondot · 10/01/2024 22:49

Yes you can the dealer can register it with your reg from either the paperwork if it's in retention or by removing it from a trade in.

Not everyone trades a car in. My DD has my last car, I don't think it is unusual to keep it in the family or sell it privately.

JimnyTCat · 11/01/2024 10:35

GasPanic · 10/01/2024 12:09

No worse IMO than renaming 10 Drudge Street to "Treetops" - arguably this is more annoying because then no one can find the damn place.

People want the stuff they want and it isn't really for anyone else to judge.

"People want the stuff they want"- I think this should be the point here. OP's DH isn't paying attention to what she would like for her birthday.

ginasevern · 11/01/2024 10:36

Lamelie · 10/01/2024 11:52

I think people who go to museums are better than people who buy handbags.
I like both but a day at a museum is more worthy, worthwhile and satisfying than buying a handbag.
It’s not that deep or controversial surely?

My thoughts exactly. I like museums and I also like to eat in good restaurants (rather than handbags) but I'd rather spend an hour talking to Mary Beard for example than Paris Hilton. But hey ho.

Iwasafool · 11/01/2024 10:39

sondot · 11/01/2024 08:46

This is really odd, why would you give me a wide berth?

I may have a private reg but I also took and advanced driving course and was a professional driver for 15 years. If anyone needs a wide berth it's you, basing your decisions on people's number plates Confused

Hilarious isn't it. My DH is a retired police officer, police trained advanced driver. I don't think people need to worry about his driving based on a number plate. It really says more about them than him.

Not sure what that has to do with the length of time it takes to transfer a plate to a newly purchased car. Normally a week tops.

Goneforaride · 11/01/2024 10:43

I have one which DH bought me a long time ago as a gift on a milestone birthday. It's one number and three letters which are an abbreviation of my name. I've had it on all my (very ordinary) cars ever since and love it. It's also now worth a significant sum more than he paid for it, so it could be argued it's been an investment.

Absolutely not "showing off" our disposable income - which is modest, or trying to make my car look newer (that's against the DVLA rules!) ..... and perfectly happy for people to think it's tacky. I think dying your hair bright pink or having any part of your body tattooed is as tacky as hell, but each to their own.

Sto123 · 11/01/2024 10:44

It was a reply to this Yes you can the dealer can register it with your reg from either the paperwork if it's in retention or by removing it from a trade in. Which was factually misleading as not all cars are bought through deals, not all cars are trade ins. Doesn't matter if it is a week tops or not, some new cars will have a new plate for a time and then change to their personalised plate. No point reading anything into that on the basis the dealer could have done it, he didn't, big deal.

sondot · 11/01/2024 10:48

@Iwasafool

Well this is weird.

You have picked my comment which was a direct response to someone saying...

you can’t just buy a new car and put a private plate on right away.

I said you can and explained how that can happen. At no point did I suggest everyone trades in their car, merely that if you do the dealer can usually transfer the reg there and then (there are exceptions) and that if you don't trade in you can give the dealer the retention certificate to put your reg on straight away

So; even if keeping the car for family you can remove the reg in advance if you wish so the dealer can register your car with your private plate from new.

I'm not at all sure why you picked my response comment and tried to make it something it's not.

sondot · 11/01/2024 10:50

It's not factually misleading at all as it was the reply to someone who spoke about buying a NEW car; which would be form a dealer/.

It's not everyone's circumstances but for people buying f a new car, it is

RosePetals86 · 11/01/2024 10:50

I think they’re chavvy and I wouldn’t personally get one but I suppose people can buy whatever they want with their money. Can think of better things to spend mine on though..!
