Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

How people choose to spend their cash is up to them.

i wouldn’t spend on a plate …but my partner has bought me one.

Pungifries · 10/01/2024 22:35

I have one that has become an heirloom. It was my mum’s since she was 25, she passed last year and I like that I now have it.

I hope my son will want it when he’s older.
I don’t think that’s tacky

Chocolatecakewithsprinkles · 10/01/2024 22:36

Was on one of those open back small trucks, i don't know much about cars but it was definitely not a fiesta 🤣

thorneyislanddoris · 10/01/2024 22:40

I keep seeing Gas engineer vans with GAS in the number plate and I wonder why they go to the expense of a private plate on a works van. But each to their own I suppose 🤷‍♀️

MiniPumpkin · 10/01/2024 22:47

@orangegato you can’t just buy a new car and put a private plate on right away. You have to inform dvla that you want to remove the private plate from old car. Once that’s done then you need to fill in another form to put it on the new one. Takes a while. It’s a pain.
are you my neighbour? 😂

TedWilson · 10/01/2024 22:48

I have one I purchased as an investment because I come from a family that do that so it's normal to me. I recently had a new car and there was a real faff in transferring the number this time and I was without it for about 4 weeks. I hated it. Felt naked! I said to DH I much prefer being a number plate wanker.

Yes you can the dealer can register it with your reg from either the paperwork if it's in retention or by removing it from a trade in.

juicyfruitmtume · 10/01/2024 22:50

Each to their own but I think k they are incredibly braggy and tacky!

However I don't like anything ostentatious!

justasking111 · 10/01/2024 22:51

I bought one for my husband as a joke nearly 30 years ago. Got passed onto son years ago.Checking recently it's quadrupled in price and worth more than sons old banger which is on its last legs.

ALJT · 10/01/2024 22:53

I didn’t get one to ‘brag’ I got one because I wanted one simple

Sickoffamilydrama · 10/01/2024 22:57

We all have them in my family it's a family tradition to get one for your 18th birthday but we do run an automotive business. I'll have to tell them we are twatty, tacky, chavs who like to brag 😂

Polis · 10/01/2024 23:01

What are they supposed to be bragging about? You see them on all sorts of cars.

I think people who go to museums are better than people who buy handbags.
I like both but a day at a museum is more worthy, worthwhile and satisfying than buying a handbag.
It’s not that deep or controversial surely?

Really. So let’s test your “logic”, shall we? A paediatric surgeon who spends her days saving the lives of sick children also likes buying a handbag on her day off. And a paedophile or serial killer likes art or history so visits museums in between committing his crimes. By your logic, the latter is better than the former? Can you not possibly fathom that different people might have different hobbies or likes or dislikes, and it has no bearing on their worthiness or utility as a person or member of society?

I have one 😳My original number plate I didn't like at all as it looked like it spelled out 'puke' so I changed it to a personalised one which wasn't in use. The only reason we had a personalised one was because the old car was bought abroad and so we needed a UK reg plate. I much prefer the personalised one and it's just the pre-2001 format of reg plates so doesn't really stand out much (maybe?!) It does have the first 3 letters of my surname on though!

My current car’s “own” plate spells an embarrassing rude word too-was very happy to put my own plate on it!

I find the level of frothing from the people who don’t like them hilarious…to get so worked up about something which has zero impact on you is mind boggling 🤣

PlipPlopChoo · 10/01/2024 23:20

I do not see the appeal either but each to their own.

FWIW a near fool proof method of identifying the dregs of society are the drivers with 3d number plates.

Namechangeforfriendpost · 11/01/2024 00:02

I've got one. I've always wanted one since I passed my test at 17. At 30 I finally got one. I thought I was gonna feel amazing having one. Nope. No difference at all and I wish I never bought it. I wish I saved my money. The only reason why I've kept it on my car is because I paid for it.

manticlimactic0 · 11/01/2024 00:12

I thought about getting one.

Then changed my mind when I kept seeing the same car about town. I realised I could never just tootle about town without someone I know knowing where I was. I couldn't have a sneaky day off work without the possibility of being spotted 😆

friendlycat · 11/01/2024 00:21

If you like them you like them. We’re all different.

But they are vulgar and awful.

Flamingosrule · 11/01/2024 00:39

I love mine .. nowt flash … 3 digits + 3 digits
my oh and kids bought it for my 40th .. it’s my initial and my date of birth (19)
and then three letters (relate to surname) .. wasn’t expensive but I love the thought they put into it .. I did the same for my daughter for her 21st

sawnotseen · 11/01/2024 03:24

I don't like them and wouldn't have one. I think they're tacky (just my opinion). My DP has one though. His Nick name and three numbers - he wanted to buy me one - I said no no no! He also has personalised foot mats! I find it quite embarrassing when I'm in his car (which I also don't like - Merc sports thing with a tiny boot - completely impracticable) But he likes it so he can crack on. My daughter's friend's mum had one that was illegal 'best mum' - she got pulled over and it was taken off. White Range Rover surprise surprise.

sawnotseen · 11/01/2024 03:38

However my cousin has one on her Rolls Royce - just her initials and numbers. I quite like that as it's understated - it's the Nick name on my DP's that I find naff. He also has it tattooed on his knuckles .... I don't like that either but it's his body, his choice and I still love him.

Doingmybest12 · 11/01/2024 03:47

They are so commonly seen now I am not sure they really say anything about who has them. So common my eyes nearly always try to make a name from random plates in front of me. I guess for most it's a bit of fun and an investment. I wouldn't have one as I'm a throw back to when they were rare and a bit 'look at me' but I think they are pretty normal now and it helps to see if friends have arrived for a meet up when their number plate announces it. I like a really amusing one or really clever one , I saw one on a flash car which I assumed was oened by someone who had a hard time at school and were told they wouldn't amount to anything judging by what it said.

camelfinger · 11/01/2024 03:58

Some are useful as it forewarns you to give that driver a wide berth. The subtle ones seem a bit pointless to me. I think in the past it was a status symbol, but not really any longer. I’d be pissed off to receive one as a gift.

Spencer0220 · 11/01/2024 05:42

I like my personal number.

DH got it for me instead of an engagement ring, because I told him not to waste money on something I'd never wear.

It works for us

QuizzlyBears · 11/01/2024 05:57

They don’t hide how old your car is. People can still tell if your car is decades old! And yes, I’m firmly in the twatty camp, I hate them.
