So there's two of us... I've always been very clear that I wanted to become a manager/TL as I've been one in the past and it was my "happy place"

Anywho, my manager did promise me something like than in the past (can't remember the last time she mentioned it but I'm sure it was around 9 months ago).

I had a "blip" of like 6 weeks where I had an "existencial crisis" and it was made clear that maybe this role wasn't necessarily the path to my fulfillment.

There's been a reshuffle, and it turns out that new "leadership" roles have been created, and my colleague (not me) has been given the TL role.

Instead, my manger has given me a "global role" with overarching visibility but nobody reports to me. So yes, I do have more exposure to other departments, yes I'm in charge of the multi-million deals, but it's still unclear to me how much agency I'll have,.or if I'd have to run things with my new TL. She has no experience of that sort of projects (as I've solely managed them from the start) so I'm still lost within the roles and responsibilities.

My manager tried to wrap it as a "good thing" as I was not limiting myself to just one role, and that it would be easier for me to jump to either a more senior overarching role, or directly under a VP.

I'm grateful that I'm employed and that I have a very good salary, etc... but I wish it has been an open conversation or "race".

I think there's definitely wisdom in what my manager is saying, but I just don't feel ill ever get to a managerial role here.

Yes, my manager said I'm great as I am, and that I would hate being the TL. That she's doing me a favour by not limiting me to that role.

Ultimately if you have been passed over for the job you want internally all you can do is make the best of it or apply for external roles that take your fancy. The fact that you don't think that the candidate who got the role you wanted is neither here nor there (and you're not exactly and un-biased observer). Make a plan rather than obsessing over reasons you think this decision was wrong.

Exactly! I don't think I'll ever know for certain either. Me being me, I think that any opportunities for vertical career progression are gone, so I'd have to play the long game of horizontal moves or I look for another and get back to square one.

That said if you want to be a people manager, it sounds like you should look around for a different role that will let you do that.

@feelingstucktoday did you post about your work issues a while ago, as your situation sounds very similar, as does your writing style?

If so, I think a lot of the advice you received then about reflecting on your own working style, strengths and weaknesses is still relevant.

Or operational. Ultimately I want to be a proper decision maker or at least help shape that decision making process.

I've excelled at that in the past. I'm happy to look at data all day, look at the trends, and then plan ahead based on the findings. Forecasting, headcount, budgeting, are things that excite me (for lack of a better word).

I do wonder if this is someone trying out or testing their new AI bot? It seems like it is not quite ready to pass the turning test yet.

I'm guessing the 'writing day job' 15+ years ago wasn't in editing.

To be fair if you are sloppy and having. crisis for 6 weeks, I doubt anyone would promote you.

Set some very clear goals with whoever you report to . Make sure there is clarity about what they are expecting- is this what you want to be doing ? If you achieve the goals then what is the next step ? 6 weeks is neither here nor there in a career so it does sound odd that it seems to have had such a big effect- but of course you could have been unlucky with the timing. I think clarity is the key here - and it may be that when it’s clear what your role is expected to be you don’t want it - in which case you need to move on - but at least you know .
