To be annoyed that I got an "olive branch"

So there's two of us... I've always been very clear that I wanted to become a manager/TL as I've been one in the past and it was my "happy place"

Anywho, my manager did promise me something like than in the past (can't remember the last time she mentioned it but I'm sure it was around 9 months ago).

I had a "blip" of like 6 weeks where I had an "existencial crisis" and it was made clear that maybe this role wasn't necessarily the path to my fulfillment.

There's been a reshuffle, and it turns out that new "leadership" roles have been created, and my colleague (not me) has been given the TL role.

Instead, my manger has given me a "global role" with overarching visibility but nobody reports to me. So yes, I do have more exposure to other departments, yes I'm in charge of the multi-million deals, but it's still unclear to me how much agency I'll have,.or if I'd have to run things with my new TL. She has no experience of that sort of projects (as I've solely managed them from the start) so I'm still lost within the roles and responsibilities.

My manager tried to wrap it as a "good thing" as I was not limiting myself to just one role, and that it would be easier for me to jump to either a more senior overarching role, or directly under a VP.

I'm grateful that I'm employed and that I have a very good salary, etc... but I wish it has been an open conversation or "race".

I think there's definitely wisdom in what my manager is saying, but I just don't feel ill ever get to a managerial role here.

Clever deliberate mistake to throw us off the scent.

It sounds, to me, as if you have a very good job. Managing people can be an absolute pain.

This, I've worked in places before and the wrong people get promoted by being great at their current job without any thought as to whether that skillset is relevant for the promotion. You selling 50% more than your colleague may not necessarily be relevant.

Yes, I agree with this. You’re being managed out sideways as it’s easier than letting you go (and the expense and HR hassle of that). Which means you either accept what they’re proposing or complain more and the screws will be turned more in your management out procedure.

Personally, long term I’d look for another position, retrain or maybe even consider a settlement agreement.

I do think it’s worth looking at your shortfalls here though as you don’t want to take these into a new job if this is on the cards.

Or they could keep me in my current role and not do anything special about it. I reckon I would end up leaving.

This on the other hands is at least the side of my role that I really enjoyed, so I know she's playing to my strengths.

Before I knew my colleague was becoming TL I was ecstatic about my new role.

You were annoyed when posting. When questioned, you have done nothing but leap to the defense of your new role. Praise be, it is the best thing that could happen to me.

I wish you all the best.

But...but....but... managing others is the OP's "happy place"

WHY WONT YOU GIVE ME THE JOB I WANT BUT AM UNABLE TO DO WAAAAAAAAAH.

Considering your manager called it an existential crisis I'd be thanking your lucky stars they're not trying to push you out. You sound naive, and in truth it would serve you well to avoid word salads.

It's the Peter Principle. Where individuals rise to their level of incompetence

This really says it all. Process your jealousy and ego issues and focus on excelling in your new role.

As a manager to be honest it doesn't look good. If I were you I'd throw myself into the role doing the best I can to regain a better reputation after the "crisis". Or find another job.

It all sounds very vague and wishy washy OP. None of this sounds like the language or behaviour of any corporate environment I've worked in.

Surely if a role has been created as part of a restructure, therefore some thought has gone into what the direction and specific accountability of that role is. I would ask my line manager for a copy of the job description and for defined boundaries of the roles responsibilities and accountabilities. Is there a contract for this new role? What does it say?

I would try and let go of what has come before, the decision has been made and the outcome would most likely have been the same even if you were offered the chance to interview, or 'compete' as you put it. Your line manager either agrees with the assessment of the candidates and options and that's why this has gone ahead or has no say at all, in which case any informal chat that came before is irrelevant.

Actually that's exactly how global people talk in my industry: wishy washy corporate talk! 😂

So, all this because you're jealous and want to one-up your colleague? That's not a good look either.

I think because I got promised that same role not that long ago, it does hurt a bit.

This! It's not the corporate jargon (which can be more or less obfuscating depending on how it's employed), it's the fact that the corporate jargon seems plucked from thin air and mashed together with a random handful of other unconnected terms. The bit where it says: There's some rigour to it, but we have someone who brings governance to it all.
What does that even mean? The mind boggles as to what job this is supposed to be.....

Scirocco · 08/01/2024 20:16

Is this the same poster who got lots of advice about her existential crisis and workplace performance issues but refused to take any of it on board?

betterangels · 08/01/2024 20:16

Agree. This is why I hate corporate speak. It's word salad.

KrisAkabusi · 08/01/2024 20:18

The existencial crisis came to be because I was wearing a few hats and wondered which hat fit best.

This was your very first sentence after repeated requests to use plain English instead of jargon! FFS!

Allwelcone · 08/01/2024 20:35

Just a note of warning on your new role, it can be stressful having to deliver when you have no "resources" if you mean people, which I think you referred to in a pp.

If they don't work for you directly and yet you will still be judged on their performance, cd be tricky.

Crazycatlady79 · 08/01/2024 20:56

Judging by previous posts from you, I can understand why you were not given the TL role.

Yes, the same poster. If I recall, she was given sensible advice and some pointers about how to see a different perspective. But the thread ended when the OP gleefully came back to report it was all a complete misunderstanding on everyone else's part and that OP was, in fact, the stellar employee.

Maybe the “existencial crisis” was a clue to the fact that this is a bot?

Any half-decent bot would spell "existential" properly!

Mufflepuff · 08/01/2024 21:37

This language is so cringy. I hope it isn't a real person. Comes across as a teenager trying to sound important but with no understanding of the words they're using.
