To be annoyed that I got an "olive branch"

So there's two of us... I've always been very clear that I wanted to become a manager/TL as I've been one in the past and it was my "happy place"

Anywho, my manager did promise me something like than in the past (can't remember the last time she mentioned it but I'm sure it was around 9 months ago).

I had a "blip" of like 6 weeks where I had an "existencial crisis" and it was made clear that maybe this role wasn't necessarily the path to my fulfillment.

There's been a reshuffle, and it turns out that new "leadership" roles have been created, and my colleague (not me) has been given the TL role.

Instead, my manger has given me a "global role" with overarching visibility but nobody reports to me. So yes, I do have more exposure to other departments, yes I'm in charge of the multi-million deals, but it's still unclear to me how much agency I'll have,.or if I'd have to run things with my new TL. She has no experience of that sort of projects (as I've solely managed them from the start) so I'm still lost within the roles and responsibilities.

My manager tried to wrap it as a "good thing" as I was not limiting myself to just one role, and that it would be easier for me to jump to either a more senior overarching role, or directly under a VP.

I'm grateful that I'm employed and that I have a very good salary, etc... but I wish it has been an open conversation or "race".

I think there's definitely wisdom in what my manager is saying, but I just don't feel ill ever get to a managerial role here.

You have all this corporation speak.

Your OP is riddled with spelling errors.

Not knowing the difference between an olive branch, carrot and stick, and consolation says to me that it's all talk.

It's all sans rigour.

Excuse Me What GIF by DINOSALLY

If the OP was my manager I think I'd spend most of our interface gawping like an intellectually challenged fish.

What on earth is all this fifty words for one supposed to actually boil down to?

feelingstucktoday · 08/01/2024 16:35

I've already had an off the record chat with one of my colleagues who's getting promoted. His biggest hesitation is that everything is up in the air, and he thinks that quite frankly it won't happen.

Who knows. He had more responsibility at some point but no pay increase.

I actually don't mind about the money, I prefer the title.

However, I do know that I'd rather have my current title and salary, than a managerial one on a lower salary.

I spend half my time at work trying to force people to say what they actually mean because all thr corporate bollocks makes it very difficult to understand everything clearly

Drives me mad!

Allwelcone · 08/01/2024 16:37

Sounds like this new role will be OK for you OP. Don't worry about what the colleague has in terms of strengths/weaknesses vs yours. I get it might hurt when their assessment of your abilities is different to yours in your ideal world.
You now have a clearer pic of who they are as a company. Do this for 18mos then review.
Hope you get a pay rise commensurate.

Seems like they’re splitting off the sales side. Eventually I think your role will come under a sales vp and all bonuses across the organisation will be prioritised for you. Your colleague just has a TL role which is mostly admin / managerial - and I suspect if she’s been caught lying about her workload she’ll be managed out soon. This structure where sales > admin has been created in every company I’ve ever worked for so you need to make a few decisions as to what you want to do long term.

I personally moved away from global sales as I hated it (banking, high profile IB divisions) but it seems like you like it but that you might be ready for a different type of sales role? Try and explore opportunities within the new sales structure of the company.

Yes I call it a carrot/olive branch/consolation prize as it can be seen in all three ways IMO

Just because, in your opinion, you believe your use of olive branch is correct doesn't make it right. As pointed out previously in the thread, the use of 'olive branch' in your situation is incorrect.

Olive Branch - something that you say or do in order to show that you want to end a disagreement with someone

OLIVE BRANCH | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary

As for the rest of your posts, you sound entitled and definitely not cut out for managing people.

So a quoted post will look like this, for example.

6-week blips don't sound good in senior roles...

I mean... Writing was my day job, but that was about 15+ years.

When I'm stressed/annoyed I write in a very peculiar way.

I has never happened at work.

The only time I've ever voiced any discontent at work, I was tired from travelling every day for hours for a whole week, had COVID, and was asked about something I was not really involved with.

Sounds like you’ve been given a great opportunity. A promotion/new job, which you get to make your own, whilst NOT having to manage people. Congratulations.

Agree. Sounds great.

Starzinsky · 08/01/2024 17:01

What's a TL?

What's a TL?

I'm guessing Team Lead.

AgnesX · 08/01/2024 17:06

If it were in my organisation that would be a great change in role, much better than a team lead.

Presumably you'll have your own budget getting the resources that you need and involved in different projects?

Yeah but she'd still oversee some of my work (my manager wasn't clear, she just said we would "align" under her).

I don't think that'd be great for my morale. Unless, it ends up being split between process Vs commercial, but unfortunately I don't hunk that's the case.

Honestly, this reads like management speak written by someone who doesn't understand management speak. It may just be your particular writing style, but it all reads very oddly and I find myself unsurprised they didn't put you in charge of people.

It is quite an exhausting read. Op Maybe that kind of jargon is used in your office but you don’t have to use it! Is it a consultancy firm op?

Viviennemary · 08/01/2024 17:10

I had to look up what an existential crisis was. Your manager probably thought you wouldn't cope with the challenge of the new role. That is what I would conclude.

TorroFerney · 08/01/2024 17:12

feelingstucktoday · 08/01/2024 16:10

Not really... I run quarterly reports on various things, one of them is conversion rate, as in "# of hours to a successful sale".

I normally just have them divided by role, not by person, but this time I did have to a tiny more granular as were looking at industry/vertical so that's how I figured it out.

My reports are used on our departmental QBRs, so nothing new at all.

Imo one of the key skills of a people manager is to be able to talk without using jargon , not least because it doesnt come across as genuine and empathetic. I understand what you are saying but lots of people here will not as they don’t use or get exposed to management bollocks lucky them. If someone comes to you and is upset or has a personal issue, waffling on verticals , granular views and c suite execs won’t help. Although next time I can’t be arsed at work I’ll steal your “having an existential crisis” line it’s ace.

Yes and no, but I'd have shared resources that I utilise according to the project (so build a team around the scope of the project in question). These resources however, would come from existing teams.

It was "think" not "hunk" in a previous update.

It's not a consultancy firm per se, but we do deal with consultancy services.

"happy place"
"existential crisis"
"olive branch"

You sound like you'd be a nightmare TL with nonsense language like that
