Wanting to change DD2s name as no one else seems to likely

TeddyBares · 08/01/2024 00:03

I hate posting this, DD2 is 8 weeks old, she’s perfect but I’m super sleep deprived so probably extra sensitive.
DD1 is 2 when she was born everyone complimented her name, and even know still do.
DD2 gets a mix of aw lovely to just down right to “oh like the fabric softener (more so over text than in person)” it’s making me really sad. Today we went out for lunch and the waitress asked their names told her and she went gosh that’s a gorgeous name in reference to DD1s but nothing about DD2s.
Im thinking we should just change it? I live her name and always imagined having a little girl with the name but wouldn’t want her to feel like her name is ugly or hate her name (I don’t like my name and get some annoying comments so wouldn’t want that). DH thinks I’m being silly and we live her name so that’s all that matters.
AIBU wanting to change it?
Her name is Leonora as I know people will be curious.

I expected her name to be comfort or lenor! Annabelle is a perfectly normal lovely name. Ive never even heard of a fabric softener called Annabelle?

gemma19846 · 08/01/2024 22:12

Oh totally misread the post. Lenora does sound like Lenor

Emma8888 · 09/01/2024 00:58

BricksTricks, you are being rather rude. The first time I heard the name, years ago, it was the owner of the name introducing herself as Leh-nor-ah. Are you saying she got her own name wrong? Why can't you accept that there is more than one pronunciation? It's most strange that you believe you are the arbiter of this name.

TeddyBares · 09/01/2024 03:40

Thank you everyone thought over it more and more today and won’t be changing it.
Little Leonora she will be, I do love her name so much I was just worried everyone else thought it was ugly!

It’s lovely stick with your first instinct. It’s a different word to the flipping fabric softener and you know what most names sound a little like something else if your name does sound a little like something else fabric softener is quite a nice product!

RoseGoldEagle · 09/01/2024 04:26

When I read your post I was thinking ‘have they called her Comfort?’…. Leonora is a GORGEOUS name, I would never have made the Lenor connection. You may as well say - oh haha you called her Philippa after the soft cheese then? People are odd.

Annabel is a perfectly lovely name, but fairly common (no judgment here as my two DDs have very common names- but I adore them so don’t care!). Leonora has the uniqueness element that makes it quite special. The two names are beautiful together. Classy choices OP.

I’m all for changing a name if you or partner feels it doesn’t suit DD or are yourself not liking it as much as you thought- but if you love it, I’d stick with it.

Coffeekisses · 09/01/2024 09:00

“Oh! Like the fabric conditioner?”
”Errr… not really?! It’s Leonora. LE-OH-NOR-AH.”

honestly you got a very silly response to a very lovely and entirely well-known name. It’s normal to feel sensitive when you’re a newborn mum though! Don’t let it get you down.

Nanaof1 · 09/01/2024 10:30

I want to add that, being across the pond from y'all, when OP mentioned "name like the fabric softener", my mind stayed in the USA and I thought, "Who would call their child Snuggle or Downey?"😊

I am glad you are not changing her name, OP. As I wrote earlier, I think it's a lovely name and I love that not every other child in her class will have that name. Though it might get more popular when people start to hear it. 💖

TomWambsgansSwans · 09/01/2024 12:33

Leonora was on my list for my DD, it's gorgeous. I knew exactly what the name was going to be when you mentioned fabric softener but that doesn't stop me from loving it as a name!

Obviously lots of product names are after people's names - Timotei for example is just 'Timothy'.

Don't worry about it, people say stupid things about names. My name has a famous song about it and people sing it as though they are the first to ever make the joke. It gets old. Leonora and Annabelle are gorgeous names, congratulations on your excellent taste!

CoffeeCantata · 09/01/2024 14:04

Late to the party, sorry!

But Leonora is a beautiful, dignified and grown-up* name, and an old and classic one (presumably meaning 'lioness'. or similar?).

I'm amazed that your friends are that ignorant! I know of many Leonoras from history, literature, real life. Funny world some people live in if it suggests fabric conditioner!!

*a pretty rare thing nowadays when many parents mistake cute nicknames for actual names. What is cute at 2 might not be so great at 52....

Lelu2021 · 09/01/2024 17:41

You should definitely not change your second daughter's name. Both names are beautiful. People are so rude..ignore their commentary!

Snazzysausage · 09/01/2024 17:47

I've known a lovely Leonora almost 40 years and it's never occurred to me to link it in any way to fabric softener! We call her Lee though.

Doingmybesteveryday · 09/01/2024 17:48

Absolutely love it. Tell them all the buggar off and mind their own business.

Boomer55 · 09/01/2024 17:49

I thought Leonora was just the feminine version of Leonard? Perfectly ok name. 🙂

AnnieSnap · 09/01/2024 17:50

I think only an idiot would say “oh, like the fabric softener”. Leonora is a beautiful name, with a long history. It shouldn’t cause your baby girl problems as she grows-up. Ignore the odd people who are being stupid and enjoy your baby girl 🙂

Doingmybesteveryday · 09/01/2024 17:50

In fact, the one day Queen of Spain is called Princess Leonora! It’s very classy. Please don’t change it. I also love Annabel!!! They sound lovely together

Firawla · 09/01/2024 17:51

Leonora is absolutely beautiful! I wouldn’t change it, maybe it’s just the sleep deprivation getting to you - it’s a gorgeous name and if you love it I think you should definitely keep it. I’m sure she will grow up to love it too.
I don’t think it’s a negative or ugly name in any way and also has a lot of potential for different shortening if she wants to play around with that when she is older

Snazzysausage · 09/01/2024 17:52

On another note,in the village where I was brought up there was a lady who's mum had got her name off a shampoo bottle!

Pres11 · 09/01/2024 17:58

Keep it!!! You picked it for a reason. I think it’s a lovely name. My daughter has an unusual name, some people think it’s beautiful, some ask me to spell it! Lol. Don’t worry! Xx

Haha no my name is India - lots of colonial ties and feels very tasteless these days, have considering going by my middle name instead a fair amount but never seems to catch on.

I love the name India, but then I love the country of India too.

GucciBear · 09/01/2024 18:02

Nothing can be very unique! Unique means one of a kind .

Annierob · 09/01/2024 18:06

Both beautiful names

dcthatsme · 09/01/2024 18:10

Leonora is a beautiful name. Haha don't know of a fabric conditioner by that name but I immediately thought of the artist Leonora Carrington so she's in good company. If you love her name do keep it. I recently met a young woman called Leonora and thought 'Wow what a cool name. I wish my parents hadn't opted for something so run of the mill - Deborah :-)'

exaltedwombat · 09/01/2024 18:11

Musicians will quip 'Leonora no. 1,2, or 3'? Which is no terrible thing.

Kerensa70 · 09/01/2024 18:16

Leonora is such a beautiful name! Stick with it! So, so pretty and elegant!! I like Nora too for short. She’s got a head start in life with such a lovely name. Trust yourself!!
