Attention seeking woman at work driving me insane

Name changed as outing to anyone that works with her!

She’s driving me insane, seriously - to the point where I have urges to shout at her or literally walk out. Shes so loud, constantly shouting and screaming. She’ll literally scream all of a sudden, waits for everyone to ask what’s wrong and then will say “I’m just so bored!” Or “I’ve just remembered it’s pizza for tea!” Or some other stupid shit.

She’ll randomly throw her papers up in the air and say “it’s stressing me out!” And everyone laughs. What exactly is funny about that?? Maybe the first time I’d laugh but when it’s a weekly thing - not so much

On Friday she suddenly slammed her laptop shut and screamed. Of course everyone was like “what?? What??” And she’s sat there lapping up the attention before declaring “I’ve just seen that my favourite band are touring”. Everyone laughed and said “Jesus I thought it was something serious”. It’s never serious, it’s always something stupid.

She’ll get up and suddenly start dancing - even getting up on the tables etc. at Christmas she brought in a load of those dancing snowmen/santas/clapping monkeys etc, set them up all around the office and turned them all on together. The voice was unbearable. The manager made her get rid of them in the end so she screamed and pretended to cry.

The woman infuriates me. I don’t even know why she annoys me so much. I seem to be the only one not laughing! Before anyone says I’m jealous, trust me - I’m the most introverted person ever, the last thing I want is to be centre of attention

She’s actually making me consider changing my job. I can’t stand it. I’m literally dreading going in tomorrow.

What kind of work are you in? How long have you worked with her?

I have no advice but I swear to god I’ve worked with this woman too

GrandHighPoohbah · 07/01/2024 20:30

Oh, that would drive me insane. It's utterly unprofessional and her manager needs to ask her to tone it down. Is there another room you could ask to move to?

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2024 20:31

The manager made her get rid of them in the end so she screamed and pretended to cry.

At least your manager sees it. Could you have a quiet word?

80skid · 07/01/2024 20:32

Good grief, she sounds frightful. It sounds really disruptive and not conducive to a professional environment. I think the manager ought to be addressing this rather than you leaving.

WashItTomorrow · 07/01/2024 20:33

That is completely unprofessional of her. Her manager needs to talk to her. Can you ask her to calm down?

Sounds unbearable! I would have lost my mind by now and I am an extrovert. I quit my last job because I couldn’t bear working with an annoying woman who was incredibly condescending and kept overstepping her role. She was so incredibly patronising that I finally quit as it was never about the money! After I quit I wondered if I had been silly but then 3 other new team members who joined after I did all quit and told me it was because they couldn’t stand working with her. Strange how organisations don’t realise that people like this make good hardworking people leave!

AhBiscuits · 07/01/2024 20:33

Based on that description, I think legally you can kill her.

dentalmisery · 07/01/2024 20:34

Is she really young OP?

Cringed so hard reading your post, she sounds like a character from The Office Grin

RedChester · 07/01/2024 20:34

I’ve worked with someone like this. A consultant no less. Turned out she was very seriously mentally unwell.

Have you shared your concerns with your line manager? I would raise it as a concern for her welfare/impact on the team, as that behaviour is so very far from normal or acceptable.

No, someone asked her to quieten down once and stop screaming as they had a migraine, she ran over and started massaging their head and wrapping stuff around them etc, they walked out in the end! It was a bloke and I suspect her walked out before he lost it with her

To be honest no point changing jobs because of it, there’s one at most work places.

rwalker · 07/01/2024 20:35

It’s only a matter of time before it wears thin
once one person points it out or gets publicly pissed off other will follow just needs someone to go first

DoYouAgree · 07/01/2024 20:35

Sounds horrendous - sympathy OP.
What's your manager like? Would they approach the woman in a subtle way if you raised it as an issue?

I can guess though that if the manager does raise it she would probably relish playing a victim and claim bullying/lots of dramatics in the office (only based on previous people similar to this I've worked with - she sounds like another level though).

Alargeoneplease89 · 07/01/2024 20:36

Oh god, I couldn't cope. I'm sure everyone will be annoyed soon... does she swap jobs regularly?

She’s in her mid 40s

Speak to your manager about the working environment. This is part of their job; to manage issues like this. Her behaviour is making your working environment unbearable. Speak to your manager. If it’s driving you to resign then you’re not going to lose anything. Just speak to them.

She left her last job due to a bullying allegation (against her)

Speak to your manager or HR, whichever is most relevant in your work place.

This would drive me mad!

I'd be tempted to note her histrionics /dramatics down for a couple of weeks to illustrate how she's distracting and affecting everyone.

EmmaEmerald · 07/01/2024 20:40

Sounds horrendous

just checking, do you actually mean “scream” like she’s had a big fright?
