extension rebellion

A member of my family belongs to the etension rebellion group and was recently arrested for causing a disturbance and criminal damage. I feel very uneasy about this and it is nothing short of hooliganism.

I spoke to this family member and they said before they do anything they are briefed as to the consequences of their actions etc. They did not feel as they had done anything wrong and tried to justify their actions as correct. They were arrested and taken to court and heavilly fined. I do not want to mix with a hooligan and would never get involved in such an action but they said if they sat back and dothing then nothing would ever change and hey think it is ok to go and spray pain on a public building and say oh its ok the paint is washable. It cost £300 to get the paint off the building and my family member said it was ok as the paint was washale. I think they were simply trying to justify themselves and cover their back and I am still very upset about it all and want nothing more do do with then. I would not dream of doing anything like this

Am I over reacting

Is this the climate action group or a group that's annoyed with number 30's plan to put up a conservatory and hot tub area?

SgtJuneAckland · 05/01/2024 21:07

😂 I thought this was going to be a witty title for a NDN planning dispute

HeadacheEarthquake · 05/01/2024 21:08

You are hugely overreacting it's their choice. I'd say chill TF out

herewegoagainonmydog · 05/01/2024 21:08

Gosh I'm so sorry I honestly thought this was going to be about planning permission.

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 05/01/2024 21:09

I thought this was gonna be about ditching the hair extensions and going au naturel.

EmmaEmerald · 05/01/2024 21:10

I'd never be in contact with a member of Extinction Rebellion.
The less thoughtful members are in it for vandalism.

The more thoughtful ones are keen on disruption for the sake of it, as they believe it's a good thing.

You are not over reacting at all.

Scampuss · 05/01/2024 21:10

Also expecting a planning dispute.

Very disappointed.

5128gap · 05/01/2024 21:13

I thought a celebrity might have ditched her fake hair for a pixie cut.

Great title. Disappointing thread.

But I am curious as to whether, if your relative wanted to enlarge their house, you’d be for or against?

EmmaEmerald · 05/01/2024 21:28

Ignore the harsh gits OP. They're probably members!

ask MNHQ to edit your title if you want real replies.

That's the only reason I opened the thread.

Squiblet · 05/01/2024 21:31

"hooligan" 😁

Oneofthesurvivors · 05/01/2024 21:32

Do you think the suffragettes were hooligans too?

Winnipeggy · 05/01/2024 21:32

Yes you're overreacting. If you know this person well then you know where their morals lie. And the massive elephant in the room is that they are almost certainly correct. Fast forward 30 years and I think we'll be looking back in shame at how we treated these people.

If it was my family member and I thought they were being authentic in their motives then I would be quietly very proud of them.

Go back 30 years and they told us the same stories.

If I write an academic paper, I'll let you know.

but have you met the founders and discussed it with them?

I don't do political activism anymore but it's worth talking to the leaders of these groups if you get the chance.

or maybe not. I have just given up on it and lead a quiet life now.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/01/2024 21:45

I know someone who belongs, he is a thoughtful and responsible person who has campaigned for eco issues for 20+ years. He is not just out to disrupt for the sake of it, he is fed up with no real action being taken to resolve the problems with our approach. So OP, yes, I think you are over reacting massively.

I’m not asking you to write a paper, I’d just like you to back up your assertions with a modicum of supporting evidence.

I see a number of very passionate activists who often have questionable methods. Nothing like what you describe.

EmmaEmerald · 05/01/2024 21:54

@ClaudiaWankleman I really wanted to understand so went to more than one group - was living in London - after meeting the founders.

that is what I found. I think we like to believe the best of people but sometimes there's just no way.

now I'm just grateful they were never blocking dad's route to hospital. He died before they really kicked off, fortunately.

Summerhillsquare · 05/01/2024 21:54

Oh, kids still not back at school then?
