extension rebellion

A member of my family belongs to the etension rebellion group and was recently arrested for causing a disturbance and criminal damage. I feel very uneasy about this and it is nothing short of hooliganism.

I spoke to this family member and they said before they do anything they are briefed as to the consequences of their actions etc. They did not feel as they had done anything wrong and tried to justify their actions as correct. They were arrested and taken to court and heavilly fined. I do not want to mix with a hooligan and would never get involved in such an action but they said if they sat back and dothing then nothing would ever change and hey think it is ok to go and spray pain on a public building and say oh its ok the paint is washable. It cost £300 to get the paint off the building and my family member said it was ok as the paint was washale. I think they were simply trying to justify themselves and cover their back and I am still very upset about it all and want nothing more do do with then. I would not dream of doing anything like this

Am I over reacting

I know someone who belongs, he is a thoughtful and responsible person who has campaigned for eco issues for 20+ years. He is not just out to disrupt for the sake of it, he is fed up with no real action being taken to resolve the problems with our approach. So OP, yes, I think you are over reacting massively.

What real action does he want and how is targeting ordinary people helping?

@ClaudiaWankleman I really wanted to understand so went to more than one group - was living in London - after meeting the founders.

that is what I found. I think we like to believe the best of people but sometimes there's just no way.

now I'm just grateful they were never blocking dad's route to hospital. He died before they really kicked off, fortunately.

Fine. It’s just a mile away from my experience with my partner’s friends who are involved.

Winnipeggy · 05/01/2024 21:32

Yes you're overreacting. If you know this person well then you know where their morals lie. And the massive elephant in the room is that they are almost certainly correct. Fast forward 30 years and I think we'll be looking back in shame at how we treated these people.

If it was my family member and I thought they were being authentic in their motives then I would be quietly very proud of them.

This!

ManateeFair · 05/01/2024 22:08

Yes, you’re overreacting. I’d burst out laughing if one of my friends was being this pissy over an offence as small as this.

However, family members fall out for all sorts of reasons. Unless the ‘family member’ is one of your children (or one of your partner’s children) it doesn’t really matter if you dislike them and want nothing to do with them. You’re not obliged to hang out with them.

If it is one of your children, though, that’s a different matter entirely. It would be a rotten mother who cut off their child for something as trivial as this.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 05/01/2024 22:35

Judging by all the flooding we've just seen YABU. Extinction Rebellion and other such activists are on the right side of history.

curtaintwitcher78 · 05/01/2024 22:52

A 'journalist' typed this using their toes.

Gymrabbit · 05/01/2024 22:54

The vandalism is just pathetic for the most part and wilfully destructive. I wouldn’t seek out the company of these cretins but wouldn’t cut a family member off for it butI would if they were part of the crew who love to stop people reaching hospital appts, getting to work and seeing relatives Before they die.
they are utter thoughtless scum and every time they do something like that they make ordinary people much more anti environment.

Rorymyers · 05/01/2024 23:33

@Squiblet 😅😹 i know right. That word alone gives away OP’s ‘i’m guessing not so young’ age.

Yorkshirelass04 · 06/01/2024 11:06

I'd be proud of them.

If I ever found myself agreeing with Priti Patel, I would know I am on the wrong side of history!

Try to relax, they are a family member trying to raise awareness about climate change, something we all need to be challenging our government on. You might not agree with their methods but what they choose to do isn't really impacting you.

fiftiesmum · 09/01/2024 07:31

I would be proud of them and will be joining once I stop work (my job requires no criminal record).
There are more people who can't get relatives to hospital because of train strikes and crashes (and too many people driving children to school)

Flute56 · 09/01/2024 11:02

you try to justify the actions of this Rebellion group but there is a right way and a wrong way of making yourself known. i would write to parliament not create hacock down a busy street like a hooligan.

I stand by my opinions and nothing will change that

😂 I thought this was going to be a witty title for a NDN planning dispute

Or “my DH wants an extension, I don’t, AIBU?”

What should we do when writing doesn’t work?

Assuming you're female - it's thanks to hooligans that you're allowed an opinion on this at all, and to vote about it if you wish.

RedPony1 · 09/01/2024 12:45

I don't think you're over-reacting at all.

SinnerBoy · 09/01/2024 13:23

*Dynamoat · 05/01/2024 21:06

Is this the climate action group or a group that's annoyed with number 30's plan to put up a conservatory and hot tub area?

😂

And most of the rest of us thought that!

Circularargument · 09/01/2024 13:26

EmmaEmerald · 05/01/2024 21:10

I'd never be in contact with a member of Extinction Rebellion.
The less thoughtful members are in it for vandalism.

The more thoughtful ones are keen on disruption for the sake of it, as they believe it's a good thing.

You are not over reacting at all.

Oh, don't be stupid.

Nothing, obviously. It's worked so well for emergencies in the past🙄

pointythings · 09/01/2024 13:36

Given our current government's utter disregard for the environment I am with your relative on this one.
