Jigsaws - what sort of psychopath does a jigsaw

And doesn't start with the edges?

DH has started our new one and is randomly putting middle pieces together.

AIBU to LTB immediately and fill in the sectioning paperwork.

Removing the poll as there is obviously no-one sane who would vote against me.

Lightheated btw.

I have a child that does this - it's insane, except that it works for her brain. There's no fighting it just treat it like some people are visual learners and others are kinesthetic for your own sanity - or ltb and suggest therapy for him😂

I won't be ordering a jigsaw puzzle right away. Or going to my local Waterstones which is mad for them! But. When we get further into January and I know that I won't be leaving myself short I am going to jigsaw like the most pyschopathic bastard who ever lived!

@Topofthemountain thanks for that link. I'm saving it. Might not be my first but definitely on the list!

Shouldgetupearlier · 06/01/2024 00:57

we’ve been trying to finish a jigsaw for days - finally done 5 minutes again. Me and dh, both exhausted and with headaches, desperate to finish it so we could put it away. He’s an edge person, I’m definitely not. I go for the colourful bits , then flit them together then finish with the edges.

Shouldgetupearlier · 06/01/2024 00:59

My dh started watching videos of the jigsaw World Cup, so we’ve also been having timed jigsaw competitions over Christmas - we’re very competitive but this seemed extreme.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/01/2024 02:17

Wait! What? There’s a jigsaw World Cup?

Frederica145 · 06/01/2024 02:30

Starting in the middle indicates some kind of personality disorder. I would have to cut my losses and LTB. You can't live like this.

MouseMinge · 06/01/2024 03:41

A jigsaw world cup?! Wow!

I'd probably watch some of it.

TheZoehan · 06/01/2024 04:13

I thought this was going to be about the film SAW. Probs time to go to bed. 😂

Charity shops have tons of jigsaws. My DS bought everyone jigsaws from the charity shop for Xmas.

Does anyone else tidy up by putting the edges and corners into a sandwich bag to get a head start next time/ help the next person to do the jigsaw?

Edited

I do this, and I started a thread on it a while back and was told its basically cheating Grin

I still do it.

SecondUsername4me · 06/01/2024 09:11

I have the Jane Austen (and others) ones from Waterstones and they handily come with a printed poster of the jigsaw which means both lid and top of the box can be used for sorting.

Londonrach1 · 06/01/2024 09:15

Jigsaws are not a solo activity. My dm leaves one out every Christmas and we all put pieces in randomly...in fact there wasn't one this Christmas. Need to have serious words with dm... We edges here too although my fil does random bits in the middle and my dm on dh side does jigsaw puzzles without seeing the picture as in you put the back together....that's strange. He is 12.

Giggorata · 06/01/2024 09:26

I thought that I was confirmed as really old when I was given a jigsaw for Christmas this year. Even more so, when I enjoyed doing it.
But mine eyes are opened!
Jigsaw tables! Jigsaw World Cup!
(And I started off with both a central bit and the edges)

LaChatte · 06/01/2024 09:36

How do these jigsaw world Cup champions start their puzzles?

SecondUsername4me · 06/01/2024 09:40

Word of warning - I bought a couple of jigsaws from The Works. They have a good selection and are cheap but both boxes came with multiples of the same pieces. The photo image is also a little fuzzy. I never ended up completing either of them.

FrangipaniBlue · 06/01/2024 11:35

You would all hate me.....

Step 1, identify corners

Step 2, do some of the edges where there obvious matches

Step 3, but remaining edge pieces to one side

Step 4, start putting middle bits/obvious "scenes" together

Step 5, somehow figure out a way to put steps 1-4 together

🤣

Raxacoricofallapatorian · 06/01/2024 12:59

@FrangipaniBlue I think this might be Chaotic Neutral.

wavetave · 06/01/2024 13:26

I’m not an edge starter, but joint jigsaw building is always going to be drama, it’s basically the monopoly of the puzzle world!

youngones1 · 06/01/2024 14:31

Doesn't everyone: start with edges, then group pieces according to colour/ tone before completing the puzzle?

Lurker2019 · 06/01/2024 20:43

BeyondMyWits · 05/01/2024 19:40

I have some jigsaws that don't even have "edges"

How is that even possible? It has to end somewhere 😂

Lurker2019 · 06/01/2024 20:43

Presumably it's just kind of knobbly round the edges. A cold, naked, vulnerable jigsaw, with its skin cruelly flayed away.

Lurker2019 · 06/01/2024 20:52

MouseMinge · 05/01/2024 20:04

This has made me want to do a jigsaw but I have cats and so I can't. Or do those roll up things work? Please someone tell me that they do so I can do a jigsaw again for the first time in years.

@MouseMinge I don't know about the roll up mats but my way of avoiding having one taking up too much space when I occasionally want to do one is to use a PC game or a mobile app.

It's been years since I did, so I can't recommend a current one.

But some even (I may hear gasps from traditionalists here lol) automatically separate the edge pieces out for you so you can get straight to the interesting matching part 😁

Oh no!! Now you got me worried about the poor skinless jigsaws 😞
