Jigsaws - what sort of psychopath does a jigsaw

And doesn't start with the edges?

DH has started our new one and is randomly putting middle pieces together.

AIBU to LTB immediately and fill in the sectioning paperwork.

Removing the poll as there is obviously no-one sane who would vote against me.

Lightheated btw.

I start with the edges but also have some middle sections and piles of sky/grass/water/forest or whatever pieces on the go at the same time. It means that all of a sudden it just comes together.

modgepodge · 05/01/2024 20:24

Interestingly children rarely start with the edges, they start with an obvious feature (the main characters face or whatever). Then at some point an adult tells them the ‘correct’ way to do it and they do it like that the rest of their life, whether it’s easier or not.

my daughter was an absolute whizz at puzzles when she was little (doing 4+ ones at just 2). Since she started school she has started trying to do them in rows starting at the top 🤦‍♀️ and is now significantly slower than she was doing it her own way.

Ive taken some tips from her and no longer bother with edge first. Means on big puzzles you don’t waste the first 20 minutes sorting - boring!

My husband wants us to buy two of the same jigsaws and have a race, he is also a middle piece starter psychopath.

My child starts with the Gruffalo's nose and works outwards. 😂

So does mine and I keep trying to direct him to edges first 😂

SomeonesEx · 05/01/2024 20:26

He likes custard as well, we are barely compatible.

It sounds like he definitely needs to LTB.

What kind of weird creation doesn't like custard?

Noseybear38 · 05/01/2024 20:29

Nope. Bar the image of the Escher ascending and descending stairs the rest is just white.

Rainbowshit · 05/01/2024 20:30

LTB

GreenSilks · 05/01/2024 20:33

What sort of psychopath does jigsaws ... FULL STOP!

I mean why?

If you like the picture just buy it, why buy one and then put it together! Madness I tell you madness!

Sharontheodopolodous · 05/01/2024 20:34

@MouseMinge yes,they do work
My mother has two as my father is worse than any cat and has a knack of knackering any jigsaw she starts just by being near it

She rolls it up and stuffs it under the sofa, where even he can't destroy it just by walking past

My dp bought his mum a 1000 piece jigsaw-it was one of those that the picture is a photo you upload and they make a jigsaw out of it (he did have the choice of 500 or 1000 pieces but thought she'd like the challenge)

the psychopath in him choose a lovely photo of his dd's stood in front of a wall that was about 500+ years old

It was very detailed wall but didn't translate very well in tiny pieces that click together

It took her (and randon members of her family) 10 months to finish it-i didn't ask which bits she started with

Poor lady was sick of the sight of it by the time it was complete

Eeepsh · 05/01/2024 20:34

Sorry for absence.

I have, totally unrelatedly, been redesigning my patio 😂😂

Edges first.. then separate the other pieces into colours, patterns or picture, into the puzzle sorting trays.. then complete the puzzle as you see fit..

Raxacoricofallapatorian · 05/01/2024 20:36

Does anyone make a jigsaw that's all edge pieces? Like this?

Edit: it wouldn't hold together very well, but I'm sure there must be ways round that. A frame, or something.

Omg I never knew I was doing something so dreadful!! I always find interesting bits in the middle to do first and then join them all together as and when. Why such a passionate following for the edges first brigade?? (Ps I love this - had no idea I wa doing anything wrong 😆😆)

I bought a puzzle like this in a charity shop. It was mental. I gave up and sent it back so someone else could have a go 😂

TheFoz · 05/01/2024 20:44

Absolutely edges first!

I am very upset about the custard comment though 😦

I can't remember. It was a name change for a laugh but while minge means what you think I have no idea where the mouse came in or why or anything.

This has made me want to do a jigsaw but I have cats and so I can't. Or do those roll up things work? Please someone tell me that they do so I can do a jigsaw again for the first time in years.

Yes, they work. We also have a cat. However, we rarely roll the puzzle up as we work on it. We do one every Christmas holiday. We put the mat on the dining table and then we use laptops, placemats, the tub of Christmas chocolates, magazines etc. To cover it and any loose pieces up. We have occasionally rolled them up (if we go back to work before we have finished) and it works well. The only downside is that it loose pieces don't roll as well. Easier to put those back away again but painful if you've carefully sorted them by shape or colour.

Our method may only work as we have a cat who doesn't go on the hard furniture. If it's not a sofa, a bed or her cat radiator hammock, she's not interested in it.

MIL and FIL like to roll theirs up as they take breaks and it works well for them too. They have no pets, they're just tidier than I am 😂

What sort of crazy person does a jigsaw with another person?!
It’s a solo activity, otherwise you get people messing with your system 😂

Foreplay ;-)

MouseMinge · 05/01/2024 21:05

@FeedMeSantiago and @Sharontheodopolodous thank you!

I will jigsaw!

2Old2Tango · 05/01/2024 21:05

I'm a real psycho. I do all the edges first but then I sort and group all the pieces, so all the two outs and two ins together, all the three outs and one in together, all the three ins and one out together...you get my drift. Then I can relax and try to do the puzzle 😁

It seems crazy, but as you're doing the puzzle you can often tell that a piece you're looking for has, for example, two "innies" next to each other, and you've a smaller group of pieces to look through to find the bit you want.

MerryMarigold · 05/01/2024 21:06

I did 1,000 piece a few days ago, and whilst I started with the edges, I then went into random sections which I thought were a bit easier. So having the edge was a bit pointless actually. I may as well have started with the easier sections. It made me question the validity of the edge-first technique which has been drummed into me.

KevinMcAllistereatsyellowsnow · 05/01/2024 21:25

That is criminal!
Corners in place first, then edges, THEN fill in the middle

caringcarer · 05/01/2024 21:27

Everyone knows you do right angle pieces first then outside pieces then middle bits but preferably picking out a colour or object to do rather than random.
