How sad he wasn't very old.

So sad.
So hard when you don’t want someone to die but you also want them to be at peace because of their quality of life.
Best wishes to Kate and their children 💐

💔

OfMiceandWomen · 05/01/2024 12:54

I hope the press leave her and her family alone in peace to grieve. There were photos of her last week of her coming out of a supermarket.

Joeslaol19 · 05/01/2024 12:55

No doubt a book will be written again.

Deebee90 · 05/01/2024 12:59

Very very sad but I feel for him it was the best outcome. He wasn’t well and clearly couldnt recover.

Itsuitsyou · 05/01/2024 13:02

This is so sad. RIP Derek, such a tragedy. I lived on the same street as him growing up and his parents are local to me. My heart sank when I saw his name whilst flicking through mumsnet as I guessed what it would be. Many condolences to Kate and all his family.

Agree with this, taking those pictures and printing them was awful.

There was no need to see this but unfortunately the press will now be camped out trying to get the first picture off her since Derek death.

Photographers and publishers are scum and only thinking about money or people buying or viewing there papers and magazines.

megletthesecond · 05/01/2024 13:04

Oh bless them all. The poor family, they've had a horrendous time. He really was hit hard by covid.

Lourdes12 · 05/01/2024 13:06

This is so sad, he wasn't that old. I feel extremely lucky to have somewhat recovered from long covid. At one point I couldn't walk or talk as well as lots of other serious problems. Bedridden and stuck in a horizontal position for 6 month unable to look after my kids. I appreciate my life so much more now being able to do all the normal things again with my kids. It's been a long journey. I honestly thought it was the end of me.

Not really the time to bring that up :/

Moier · 05/01/2024 13:07

I have followed her story.. watched her documentary and this has hit me really hard. Myself.. my daughter and 18 year old Grandson have long covid and allsorts of health problems. We have all been hospitalised.
My heart goes out to her and their children.
God bless them all.

RabbitsRock · 05/01/2024 13:08

I have a lot of time for Kate & feel so sad for her & the families. I haven’t watched the documentary but know she was extraordinary in her devotion to Derek. Very sad news.

So sad that he has been so poorly for nearly 3 years.

Nearly 4 years

justasking111 · 05/01/2024 13:09

Question?

If Kate hadn't been so high profile in the media all the time would he have been allowed to slip away years ago.

I'm reminded of Michael Schumacher who's in the same position

And? Put yourself in their shoes. The financial hit must be considerable. Women generally don't get to work in tv beyond their mid-fifties.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/01/2024 13:10

It is sad and especially for his children but he had suffered for a very long time and I can't help but think there is some way to view his passing as a relief for him and some of his loved ones.

There isn’t a human being on this planet who is perfect. He was loved by his family and suffered a great deal before dying at a very young age. Does this punishment fit that crime - no, his misdemeanours in life are therefore not relevant.

SuperGinger · 05/01/2024 13:12

Such a brave family, I hope they all find peace at the moment, she comes across as a thoroughly good woman.

F1ymetothetoon · 05/01/2024 13:13

RIP Derek and love to Kate and her family Flowers

RenoDakota · 05/01/2024 13:13

Shocked and appalled that the BBC News at One chose to drag up unsavoury details about him in their 'tribute' just now.
Shame on them.

My friend was like this a year ago. Thankfully she's turned the corner now

The complications he experienced were extreme, I suspect if he was in a family with less resources available to them he might have died much earlier and not had the opportunities to try various treatments. In hindsight who can say if that was a blessing or curse.

I hope his family have time to start to grieve for the husband and dad they have lost now he is at peace. I wouldn't wish what he went through on anyone.

It makes me think about all the other unheard long covid, or covid damaged people out there trying to get on with their own damaged lives and what support they are getting.
