How sad he wasn't very old.

Covid was brutal. Sadly this was only going to end one way, the damage to his body was too much to come back from.

Sympathy for Kate and for anyone else who lost loved ones to Covid.

FreshWinterMorning · 05/01/2024 12:11

Gosh, what sad news to hear today. 😢Not shocked, as he was very ill over Christmas, and in intensive care - after having a massive heart attack . Still very sad news though... R.I.P. Derek, and love and good wishes to Kate Garraway - and their children. ❤

Bless him and the whole family.

I don’t think he had much of a life so in some ways it’s a mercy for him.

I agree with your second sentence. I just didn't want to say it. Sad

My heartfelt sympathy to Kate and their children. The last 4 years have been so hard for all of them and I sincerely hope Kate and the children are left alone to grieve in peace and privacy.

Oppositioblue · 05/01/2024 12:15

Such sad news. RIP Derek.

JenniferGreenHat · 05/01/2024 12:15

Terrible news. Kate’s done such an amazing job of getting her family through the last few years, she seems to have such love and patience for Derek. Much love to her and their children and family.

Me too, I've thought this for ages. He's seemingly had no quality of life for a very long time. Whilst it will still be hard for the family to absorb, it will allow for the reset that they need.

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/01/2024 12:19

Heartbreaking really. That poor family.

It might hammer home to some that Covid can't be taken lightly for some people.

Absolutely. What that poor man and his family went through.

EdgarsTale · 05/01/2024 12:21

It’s awful. I hope he rests in peace.

I know someone who has been left in a terrible state by Covid. It’s so sad to see. Covid has completely destroyed her body.

betterangels · 05/01/2024 12:23

The whole thing was just heartbreaking. May he be at peace now. Deep sympathy to the family.

LIZS · 05/01/2024 12:24

Very sad for all who knew him Sad

the80sweregreat · 05/01/2024 12:25

The documentary that Kate Garraway made about him last year or the year before , was heartbreaking. Especially for his children who wanted their old dad back and he wasn't able to be like that anymore.
It is very sad news.

Having someone with long COVID in a high profile position has always made me feel it was harder for the powers that be to pretend long COVID wasn't a problem.

very much this. I know of people who have been really long term disabled by Covid and can’t work or leave bed yet there is a view that the pandemic is over. No need for precautions, testing, public information about it. It’s a very worrying official blind spot.

To be fair Derek took ill before there were vaccines. The number of people as badly affected now is thankfully much less, although it does still happen of course.

very sad for KG and her family. At least Derek is finally at peace.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 05/01/2024 12:26

Such sad news.

Beaverbridge · 05/01/2024 12:27

So sad for the family. Kate was a wonderful wife to him.

hattie43 · 05/01/2024 12:29

Sadly inevitable.

Sapphire387 · 05/01/2024 12:30

Really sad news. It will have been hellish for him and his family over the last few years - they have all been so brave. May he rest in peace. I wish Kate and their children all the best.

Umanresources · 05/01/2024 12:33

It's very sad for all the family but a merciful release for Derek. Hopefully Kate and the family will be left in peace. She must be devastated but thankful he isn't suffering any more. She must be exhausted herself after taking care of him and her family. She deserves a complete break to look after herself, as well as the children.

Sartre · 05/01/2024 12:35

Awful he was very sick for so many years, he must have suffered greatly. It also must have taken an enormous emotional toll on Kate and their children. RIP.

MrsMitford3 · 05/01/2024 12:36

I just posted this on the other thread-

How terribly terribly sad. Kate was so devoted and fought so hard for/with him. Their poor family.

However-and I say this as someone who watched my husband battle leukaemia for 3 years and whose body was just devoured by the fight-sometimes winning is not having to fight anymore.

RIP Derek and peace to Kate and her children.

Stanleysays7888 · 05/01/2024 12:41

Really terrible illness for all of them. RIP Derek and I hope they can all grieve in peace.

I lost my partner - older two DC's dad - to an aggressive brain tumour. I agree with you. Sorry for your loss.

Livinghappy · 05/01/2024 12:46

Very sad news. I hope Kate and her children know how many people are thinking of them.
