I can't stare at another shelf staring at shampoo

Posting for traffic because I'm going crazy.

The shampoo I use is super cheap currently, generic own-brand supermarket anti-dandruff shampoo but my hair is not doing good right now.

For A MONTH I keep trying to change my shampoo. I get so overwhelmed with researching it because you get SO MANY conflicting answers (and just so many answers anyway).
I'm constantly going to Boots and just staring at the shelf trying to decide which and end up walking out in stress.

I've bought the Mielle shampoo (TikTok hype), but now I keep reading stuff online that it's made people's hair fall out!!!

Anyway, I am obviously being unreasonable getting stressed about shampoo, but can I please ask personal (non-commissioned) recommendations? My hair is all natural, slightly oily, more on the thick side, not colour/heat damaged but just lifeless and slightly thinning.

I alternate between, bed head, Kerastase and pureology, I find if you use the same shampoo consistently it stops working. X

@RandomMess I've never heard that so it's interesting! I've actually used anti-dandruff shampoo 3x a week for about 7 years.

Lush angel hair bar is really nice or you can get ogx biotin shampoo, contains no parabens, harsh chemicals.

redxlondon · 01/01/2024 19:40

I have to use T-Gel but then afterwards use a really rich conditioner. Anything from the professional range in Boots will be good.

Beautiful3 · 01/01/2024 19:41

I have tried hundred of shampoos, expensive and cheap ones too. My mil worked for Regis hair salon head quarters, and gave me so many samples of different ones. My work had an in house salon and we got staff discount off products. Only one has ever been nice on my hair and scalp, that's head and shoulders 2 in 1. Recently I tried a sulphate free shampoo for 6 months, which was expensive and made my hair greasy.

Squirrelsnut · 01/01/2024 19:43

Aussie range. Really good. And the newish lamellar(?) conditioning waters are very effective and working in mere seconds.

UtopiaPlanitia · 01/01/2024 19:44

OP, these two YouTube channels have helped me a lot with hair and scalp care:

Manes by Mel (professional hair stylist and studying trichology) - https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCkGyDv3DZjIa4wYsb1aUPaA?cbrd=1

SwavyCurlyCourtney (chemistry degree) - https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCkGyDv3DZjIa4wYsb1aUPaA?cbrd=1&cbrd=1

Both channels are mainly about curly/wavy hair but both provide information on product composition and use, as well as scalp care that are of use for all hair types. I’ve improved my scalp and hair health from following advice that suits my hair/scalp type.

Best of luck.

If this thread tells you anything op it's that everyone is different so they're is no one right answer.
Make a list of twenty, but each one in turn. Use it. Finish it. Score it if you want.
When you're done carry on buying your favourite. 😁

shellyleppard · 01/01/2024 19:46

Hi op..... I use the simple shampoo and conditioner. Anything else makes me itch after a few weeks. Its in home bargains. My children use the dead sea shampoo range.....also in home bargains. It makes their hair lovely and soft

chalkiegirl · 01/01/2024 19:49

My hairdresser and a trichologist told me to avoid using hair products containing parabens, sulphate and silicones, which most of them do.
Currently using Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner which isn’t too expensive ( especially if you buy it from Amazon).

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 01/01/2024 19:53

Claudia W advertises h&s for the same reason Claudia schiffer endorses L’Oréal box dye, because our minds manage to convince ourselves that a multimillionaire ex supermodel married to a multimillionaire film producer uses box dye in her bathrooom when her roots poke through instead of going to Richard ward. She’s just like us, she mixes her dye up and gets out her scraggiest towels and dyes her own hair. Bonkers.

Aveda is the best for my hair, might be awful for others. You just have to try it all like we had to.

Maia77 · 01/01/2024 19:55

I just use John Frieda and sometimes Kerastase. Anything else is not good at all. My hair is thick and frizzy.

1daughterand3sons · 01/01/2024 19:57

I use vosene shampoo and I also use their spray in conditioner.
I haven't changed shampoo brand since I was a child.

Ohwheretobegin · 01/01/2024 20:00

I have fine, blonde, prone to being flyaway, thinning hair and I feel like I’ve tried every shampoo. The one I’ve finally settled on, which not only makes my hair lovely and soft as well as volumized is the Tigi honey and oat shampo and conditioner. It’s not cheap but I get it on amazon. Good luck

Slitheringheights · 01/01/2024 20:16

My sister bragged about lush shampoo bars. I tried it and haven’t looked back. I need to wash my hair every day as it’s greasy, dosent matter what shampoo I use, plus it’s thinner due to chemo. But the shampoo bar feels great after washing and smells lovely.

HolidaysPleaseNow · 01/01/2024 20:18

I swear by vosene! For years I had to change my shampoo every now and then coz it starts to get too oily and used to the shampoo I use. Not with vosene, it leaves my hair feeling amazing. It's in such good condition now and I've been using it for over a year

BeckyBloomwood3 · 01/01/2024 20:19

OP I have the same problem but quite honestly this thread isn't really going to help. Everyone's hair is different!
You need to look for recommendations for your specific hair type.

I've tried loads but ended up going back to supermarket tresemme/pantene whatever which actually works unlike the fancy, expensive ones. So much for no sulphates and saving the environment...

ivor · 01/01/2024 20:20

@Oxborn just wash every 2-3 days is my current routine.

Use Redken - but get it on offer on on Look fantastic or something. I always scrimp and go on to Aussie or something else, then return to it.

some of the cheaper shampoos leave silicones on your hair for a temporary gloss but over time they build up leading to dull, prone to greasy hair.

olaplex 6 is really worth it. Use a tiny bit on damp hair before styling and you’ll notice the difference.

RocksOn · 01/01/2024 20:22

The only shampoo and conditioner I buy repeatedly is Pureology.

Why does Claudia W and others bang on about H&S being so great then?!

Because she is paid to advertise it. That's how advertising works.

Winnading · 01/01/2024 20:33

I buy whatever is in the pound shop, several different ones. Because each has some variety that I like. E.g shiny, smooth, masque, super clean, clarifying etc.
I use a different one each time, so one day I have shiny hair, the next is conditioned and the next time its super shiny. Cheap so if I hate the way it feels, I've lost a quid or two..
OP are you like this with toothpaste?

Sunflower8848 · 01/01/2024 20:35

Do you live in a hard water area? We just got a water softener installed and the difference in my hair is AMAZING!

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/01/2024 20:36

I mostly buy the cheapest one, which is usually Alberto Balsam. Sometimes I get Aldi own brand. As a skint teenager, I even used washing up liquid in an emergency! Despite this nonchalance over shampoo, my hair hasn't fallen out! Although I think it's much softer these days using Alberto Balsam than it was the time I used the washing up liquid.

However, I did recently buy a Garnier Ultimate Blends shampoo bar when they were reduced in Wilkinsons in the closing down sale. It's made my hair smell lovely, and I'm tempted to buy another, even if I'll have to pay full price.

Moofart · 01/01/2024 20:38

I get completely overwhelmed in the shampoo Isle too and end up leaving without one most times so I get it!

Hallelujah2020 · 01/01/2024 20:39

Similar hair to yours ie thick and tends to get oily

Aussie is the only one that works for me
