I can't stare at another shelf staring at shampoo

Posting for traffic because I'm going crazy.

The shampoo I use is super cheap currently, generic own-brand supermarket anti-dandruff shampoo but my hair is not doing good right now.

For A MONTH I keep trying to change my shampoo. I get so overwhelmed with researching it because you get SO MANY conflicting answers (and just so many answers anyway).
I'm constantly going to Boots and just staring at the shelf trying to decide which and end up walking out in stress.

I've bought the Mielle shampoo (TikTok hype), but now I keep reading stuff online that it's made people's hair fall out!!!

Anyway, I am obviously being unreasonable getting stressed about shampoo, but can I please ask personal (non-commissioned) recommendations? My hair is all natural, slightly oily, more on the thick side, not colour/heat damaged but just lifeless and slightly thinning.

I alternate between John frieda moisture or aussie range. Depends which is on offer

KCandtheSunlightBand · 01/01/2024 19:01

I have bleached then coloured hair to blend in the grey, and due to my age I think my hair is thinning a little around the fringe area, my hair is fine but lots of it.
I use Philip Kingsley Elasticiser, it’s expensive but I buy 1ltr bottles that last over a year. It’s a pre wash treatment. Apply to damp (NOT wet) hair, concentrating on ends not roots. Hair seems to suck it in, so stop applying when it’s obviously not taking any more in. Then dry your hair with it in, however you like, in the sun, with a dryer, under a shower cap. You can sleep in it if you want. Wash it out well and then condition. I only use it once or twice a month now. Gives amazing condition but also volume. I use it every day on summer hols as a protector from the sun, also if I use a sauna or steam room.

For shampoo and conditioner I use Richard Ward, Densi Growth thickening range, available at Waitrose and often on offer. It’s the best I’ve ever used, and what’s really important for me is the smell which is divine, it’s like a spa experience at home.

Ah shampoo selecting....I feel.your pain.
I have a really sensitive scalp ad it can get sore and dry curly (or frizzy) hair.

My current favourites are:
Kertase
Cornish Seaweed stuff - expensive but my hair appreciates it.
Faith of Nature (jojoba conditioner is amazing)

I have tried so many in the past, and reading this thread is going to make me try MooGoo.... Endless searching for hair perfection.....

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 01/01/2024 19:03

I use:

clarifying elvital shampoo by L’Oreal, a sulfafe free children’s shampoo and a prescription one if I need it.

what matters just as much (if not more) than the shampoo is your shampooing method imo. I like to really get in there and manually cleanse my scalp. Properly rinsing the shampoo is incredibly important as well.

"Why does Claudia W and others bang on about H&S being so great then?!"
Because she's being paid by them! Surely that's obvious?!

I agree their hair products are very good but they don't as far as I am aware do the shampoo bars which I find extremely odd as they were so pro the environment with refilling bottles. I would swap if they would do the bars

I was in Bodyshop on Saturday and they had bars of the Banana and the Ginger shampoos.

wintersgold · 01/01/2024 19:14

Just experiment. Get yourself a couple of (ideally travel-size) bottles of different brands, see what works best. I really like Olaplex, Oribe, Living Proof, Ouai.

Have you tried asking at your hair salon? Usually they sell some lovely brands (which are tricky to source otherwise) and can offer recommendations. Assuming you trust your stylist's judgement of course

Because they’re paying her £££££££ to say so!!

Presumably!

mybrainisfull · 01/01/2024 19:21

I have thick, coloured wavy hair, in my 50's.
I use KMS shampoo, then Tresemme moisturising conditioner. The KMS is expensive, conditioner cheaper.

Settled on this combination after much trial and error. hope it helps someone.

DoodlesMam · 01/01/2024 19:21

Timotei. £1.99, no silicones or nasties. My fine thinning hair loves it. I dismiss kerastase, olaplex, and other expensive brands. Good old Timotei is great!

FuckityFuckBollocks · 01/01/2024 19:22

Pretty much everything boots sells is utter shite.

You need SLS and sulphate free. Try Faith in Nature.

Mikimoto · 01/01/2024 19:22

Something from the Kiehl's or LeLabo ranges might suit you.

Fitandfree · 01/01/2024 19:23

I use a few different ones - I think mixing it up works well. I currently have John Frieda, Herbal Essence, Aussie, Tresemme, and that green caffeine one. To be honest I think it's the conditioners that really differ in their results. I have the matching conditioners, but often mix and match.

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2024 19:24

@FuckityFuckBollocks , Boots sell Faith in Nature shampoos. I love Boots and their own brands are fab.

Why does Claudia W and others bang on about H&S being so great then?!

Because they are paid to

Minniem2020 · 01/01/2024 19:26

I really like the L'Oréal elvive shampoos. I mainly use the colour one but any of the range are good

purplehotdogs · 01/01/2024 19:26

I was in the same position a couple of weeks ago then I realised it was utterly ridiculous to be so stressed about shampoo of all things, and bought some Alberto Balsam and some super cheap banana scented shampoo from some kind of savers shop in my local town. Both are great on my hair.

Neighbours87 · 01/01/2024 19:26

I actually like karatesse. Disappointed in redken. If you go look fantastic you can filter my hair type

Why does Claudia W and others bang on about H&S being so great then?!

Take a wild guess!

PonkyPonky · 01/01/2024 19:31

Please try Aldi’s own brand Bonded shampoo and conditioner. It has completely changed my life!

Squidlette · 01/01/2024 19:33

Body shop ginger is great for dandruff/psoriasis. There's also a v cheap version in The Range, which dd uses.

middlenamestuck · 01/01/2024 19:33

I’ve tried SO many expensive brands over the years (kerastase, olaplex, redken, etc) and have found that Garnier ultimate blends is just as good if not better, and it’s usually on offer somewhere at a supermarket/boots/Superdrug.

The banana one works well for my hair personally (quite thick and unruly) but my friend with similar hair uses the cononut and my sister with finer hair prefers the papaya.

JANEY205 · 01/01/2024 19:33

I use Aussie or Pantene. Sometimes a purple shampoo to brighten my highlights. Aww no difference from olaplex shampoo but do use their oil!

Oopendoops · 01/01/2024 19:39

I have much the same type hair and the only thing that made a difference was a caffeine serum from the Inkey. I've been using it for about 3 months now and my hair has stopped falling out and I can see the regrowth and it's getting thicker. I used to buy into the hype of the expensive shampoos, and they did nothing.
