I can't stare at another shelf staring at shampoo

Posting for traffic because I'm going crazy.

The shampoo I use is super cheap currently, generic own-brand supermarket anti-dandruff shampoo but my hair is not doing good right now.

For A MONTH I keep trying to change my shampoo. I get so overwhelmed with researching it because you get SO MANY conflicting answers (and just so many answers anyway).
I'm constantly going to Boots and just staring at the shelf trying to decide which and end up walking out in stress.

I've bought the Mielle shampoo (TikTok hype), but now I keep reading stuff online that it's made people's hair fall out!!!

Anyway, I am obviously being unreasonable getting stressed about shampoo, but can I please ask personal (non-commissioned) recommendations? My hair is all natural, slightly oily, more on the thick side, not colour/heat damaged but just lifeless and slightly thinning.

BodyShop ginger shampoo is amazing for dry scalp. Really rate their hair products.

MinervatheGreat · 01/01/2024 17:17

Don’t over think this.
I think for many of us, it’s a life long trial and error.

Im going grey (but it fortunately it’s an even spread and fortunately looks like highlights) so I’ve recently discovered a shampoo to lift the silver elements.

Maybe read labels and look for sulphate or nearly additives free products. I use about 3 different ones on a rotation but I’m not too hung up about the outcomes for my fine slightly thinning glory!

Hairburst is great

I share your overwhelm. Posting the link to a radio 4 programme analysing the science behind "wonder-products". I haven't actually listened to the shampoo episode but did hear the one on collagen which was really good.

This is what you need!

Another vote for the Aussie shampoos. I’ve used several of them, you’d have to maybe read up which one suits your hair type.

I like the Aussie ones too.

They're quite cheap too so not much lost by giving them a go OP :)

I agree their hair products are very good but they don't as far as I am aware do the shampoo bars which I find extremely odd as they were so pro the environment with refilling bottles. I would swap if they would do the bars

Things I have tried which were NOT worth the money:
Olaplex
Kerastase

Just so that you can eliminate them from your search. No better than Tresemme but cost £20.

Disagree. Kerastase is amazing

ivor · 01/01/2024 17:18

@MinervatheGreat that's where I got confused too, because in my (extensive) research, some said sulphates were terrible and ruining people's hair, and others said sulphates actually work to make your hair feel better.

My dry scalp hated it. 😬
I use averna green fresh, recently switched from the original oats version and have been pleasantly surprised to find my hair quite perked up.

I was about to link to the same episode. As I recall the upshot was that all shampoo, barring the ultra, ultra cheap stuff, was basically the same and made practically no difference to the condition of your hair. I use bar shampoos now. Mainly to cut down on plastic waste. I really like them.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 01/01/2024 17:20

Pretty much none of the supermarket shampoos, they all have a load of rubbish in them. Go to your hairdresser and ask for their recommendation or buy the oje they use if you like it

AlisonDonut · 01/01/2024 17:20

I used t-gel when I am in the UK, I miss it when it runs out so I'll be stocking up on it when I visit next year.

Iminpatchinghell · 01/01/2024 17:21

I use Lush, previously used Tigi Bed Head. Both have been mentioned by PP. They’re definitely more expensive but you can use less.
There’s a thickening Lush one which they recommend only using once a week. If you use a better shampoo then maybe you can wash less and that’ll help your hair too.

I only use Aveda products… It’s expensive but averages out in the long run because it works an I don’t have to use 1/2 a bottle of conditioner in one go for it to work.

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2024 17:21

@ivor , go to Boots, or Aldi or Lidl and buy their own brand shampoo.
It does the job.

Cosycover · 01/01/2024 17:21

Bedhead is good.

Runningandtired · 01/01/2024 17:21

@ivor just like a bar of soap. Wet it. Rub it into your hands and then rub into your scalp. Don't wash the ends every time. Let is run into your hair. Have a shop around. Some get quite a good lather. I have tried some from lush before and they where good

ivor · 01/01/2024 17:22

@Huckleberries73 now onto the question... which leave-in conditioner?

I'm so unclued up. Is it literally just normal conditioner that you leave in? And it's not slimy?

@BingoMarieHeeler I wish I was that laidback Grin
Think I must have spent at least 2 hours over the course of December in Boots/Superdrug reading over their shampoos trying to decipher which is best!!

Research at home, read reviews and then go to the shop that sells what you want.

The Garnier Ultimate Blends range is good; lots of choice so you can choose the products best suited to your hair type.

I really love their oatmilk shampoo. Not the bar though. I have thick dry hair and the bar was completely useless on it.
Im currently using the L’Oréal purple hyaluronic acid conditioner and that seems pretty good so far.

Teapleasebobb · 01/01/2024 17:22

A friend just got me on to the brand Monday. It makes my dry, frizzy hair feel really soft.

Workingtomorrow · 01/01/2024 17:22

I wouldn’t worry about people saying Miele makes you hair fall out.

There loads of rumours, lawsuits and all sorts go on. It’s often not based on reality. A few people may have started losing hair for unrelated reasons and then decided the shampoo was to blame. At which point loads of people join in.

This week someone posted a review saying the new Sol De Janerio body cream attracted wolf spiders. The. People claimed one of the ingredients is proven to attract spiders. Which is completely false. Except loads of people all claimed they wore it and it attracted spiders. Chemists and spider experts (there’s probably another name for spider experts) have even been doing videos debunking it.

But now it’s became the cream that attracts spiders. All because one woman wore it and happened to see a couple of spiders that day so decided it must attracted spiders.

Use the shampoo you have.

QuestionableMouse · 01/01/2024 17:23

It's shampoo! Stop researching, just buy something and try it. Worst that happens is you don't like it and won't use it again.
