Enough food??

autienotnaughty · 01/01/2024 14:49

Buffet for 8 adults-

750g ham
12 bread rolls
24 Chinese pastry's
2 large pizza cut in to 12 pieces each
12 garlic dough balls
Bowl of salad with cous cous
5 bowls of nibbles
Bread sticks and humous
Packet of cured meats
Cheese
Olives
Condiments/pickles

Was this enough? I thought it was loads but it went so quickly. I had extra snacks to replenish the bowls but I felt bad there wasn't more food. Everyone said it was great but usually a buffet doesn't empty instantly. We ate at 4pm .
Aibu to think I supplied enough food?

It depends who you had round. If it went quickly then maybe could have had some more bread rolls and dough balls? It’s difficult to judge sometimes.

FuckingHellAdele · 01/01/2024 14:56

I'd probably have had enough rolls for at least two per person.

It sounds lovely, but yes I do think it looks a bit light.

NewyearNewyear2024 · 01/01/2024 14:57

I read that and thought it didn’t sound enough and then you said you already served it. Eg one packet of meat between 8 isn’t much. Or twelve rolls means some people only get one.

FuckingHellAdele · 01/01/2024 14:58

Maybe I'm just a greedy bastard though, I love a buffet

Baircasolly · 01/01/2024 14:58

I think your main mistake was the 12 rolls. I'd probably have gone for 20. Also, dividing what you've described 8 ways sounds reasonable enough, but there's always some greedy fucker who doesn't automatically do that division in his head when he sees the food, and grabs two people's worth.

Were these people then staying all evening until midnight, though? Because if they all headed home at 7, they could just make themselves something extra when they got home! Hosting is expensive.

justalittlesnoel · 01/01/2024 14:58

That doesn't sound quite enough for 8 adults imo, but depends if you invited big eaters!

If it was for NYE and served at 4pm I'd expect it all to be gone quite quickly, especially if people are drinking too.

AhBiscuits · 01/01/2024 15:00

I would have done a bit more.
Enough rolls for 2 each, most people will take more than one dough ball, another pizza or 2.

RaininSummer · 01/01/2024 15:01

Cheese and crackers would have been a good addition.

Luxell934 · 01/01/2024 15:01

On NYE for 8 fully grown adults, no I don’t think it was enough. Most people would have had 1 ham roll, 1 slice of Pizza, 1 garlic dough ball, a few Chinese pastries each plus a few nibbles here and there. Especially if it was served at 4pm and they stayed till midnight.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/01/2024 15:04

I’d have gone at least two rolls and quarter of a pizza each.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2024 15:05

It's not enough if it was supposed to be their main meal of the day.

Did you put out desserts? Cake or trifle or fruit salad or something?

newmum0604 · 01/01/2024 15:05

So one example plate at a minimum...

Ham roll
3 Chinese pastries
3 slices pizza
1 garlic doughball
Salad and couscous
Few bread sticks and houmous
Some crisps
Bit of cheese and some olives
Few pieces of salami

That is plenty of food in surprised at these replies (and I eat a lot)

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2024 15:05

I had similar when I did the buffet for my sons christening!

Obviously a lot more people but fuck me the food went straight away! I was gobsmacked! I had done:

Large slow cooker of veg chilli
Large slow cooker of chilli con carne
2 x corned beef pies (plate pies)
2 x bacon and egg pies
Large bowl of tomato pasta salad
Large bowl of tuna pasta salad (mixing bowel sized)
Platter of sausage rolls
6 large pizzas
Platter of vegan pastries
2 loaves of bread (the fancy sliced ones)
Crackers x 3 boxes
Selection of cheese
Selection of pate
Platter of deli meats
Salads
Doritos and dips
Breadsticks
Plus a platter each of egg mayo, cheese and ham and pease pudding sandwiches

Think there were about 60 people there!

I was so shocked! I now always over cater and tbh there's still never a lot left!

Jill23 · 01/01/2024 15:06

Fine for snacks/lunch but probably not substantial enough for a main meal for 8 adults?

FuckingHellAdele · 01/01/2024 15:08

But that assumes that everyone likes and eats the same things.

Aunty Brenda might take three rolls, because she doesn't eat pizza or Chinese spring rolls. Not intentionally denying Uncle Derek and our Bev of their ham rolls

NewyearNewyear2024 · 01/01/2024 15:08

@newmum0604 yes that would be enough for me but if you’ve got someone who took two rolls then you wouldn’t get one at all. Also one salad between everyone? Obviously it depends how big it was but if it was supermarket sized (just got a ready made one in Tesco) it wouldn’t be enough.

Danikm151 · 01/01/2024 15:08

Nobody would have stuck to 1 garlic dough ball.
it definitely wasn’t enough- especially if it was served buffet style. People always take more at a buffet.

If you had that much you should have plated up the “mains part” then had the extras to serve themselves.

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 15:08

Not enough of the rolls, ham, pizza or dough balls.
I'd have had two rolls each, minimum. Those pizza slices would have been tiny. Dough balls are little and there wasn't even enough for two each.

No-one eats one dough ball!

NewyearNewyear2024 · 01/01/2024 15:09

True about the dough balls!

BCBird · 01/01/2024 15:12

I certainly wouldn't not get stressing over it after the event. I'm.sure it was delicious

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2024 15:12

Also depends if you had any teenagers there. My sons could eat a large whole pizza to themselves. I mean, they wouldn't do that at a buffet out of politeness, but they'd probably be hungry. Those Chinese snacks are tiny little mouthfuls really. To cater for the extra hungry people for whom ham rolls and some crisps etc is not really going to cut it, I usually do a hot slow cooker type thing that is easy to keep warm, with some rice or something eg curry or chilli. Chicken wings etc. Always desserts.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2024 15:13

And not everyone will like every item. I wouldn't eat doughballs, for example.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 01/01/2024 15:17

At least cater for 2 rolls each though have extras
And one doughball each? They're one bite! Three or four minimum

Add some chicken bites, crackers, sausages and sausage rolls etc

If this was intended as a buffet through to midnight then it was definitely far too little

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 01/01/2024 15:18

Also unless those pizzas were massive, people will definitely take 2 slices minimum because they'll be tiny.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 01/01/2024 15:18

That pizza must have come in slivers, not slices Confused
