Enough food??

autienotnaughty · 01/01/2024 14:49

Buffet for 8 adults-

750g ham
12 bread rolls
24 Chinese pastry's
2 large pizza cut in to 12 pieces each
12 garlic dough balls
Bowl of salad with cous cous
5 bowls of nibbles
Bread sticks and humous
Packet of cured meats
Cheese
Olives
Condiments/pickles

Was this enough? I thought it was loads but it went so quickly. I had extra snacks to replenish the bowls but I felt bad there wasn't more food. Everyone said it was great but usually a buffet doesn't empty instantly. We ate at 4pm .
Aibu to think I supplied enough food?

I don’t think that is enough food for 8 adults. if the food was gone straightaway I would say there wasn’t enough to eat.

YourNameGoesHere · 01/01/2024 16:12

It doesn't sound enough at all. I would have been starving if I were one of your guests, presumably they got there before 4 and were staying until midnight at a minimum?

aSwarmOfMidgies · 01/01/2024 16:15

Since I would normally only eat one roll for lunch and a piece of fruit I would hardly be starved with that lunch

But clearly people needed something more if it cleared at the first round

( not competing, just saying that as an active healthy weight person that's all I need )

ThreeTreeHill · 01/01/2024 16:20

It's enough for everyone to have 1sts, but its not a substantial amount and not enough to last throughout the evening at a party, especially if alcohol involved.

It's a quarter pizza, 3 Chinese pastries and a ham roll each. Plus some salads and other nibbles. If probably take that as a plate. Hence why it went quickly. I wouldn't be starving but equally would be glad I'd eaten something before hand

Right, sure.

This wasn't a lunch as OP said they ate at 4pm and I assume it was some sort of NYE gathering/celebration.

It wasn't just a bog standard lunch though was it? I mean at work I often just take a sandwich as I can't guarantee I'll have time to eat much more than that but that's irrelevant. At what was presumably a new year's eve party quite likely with lots of booze a bloody solitary ham roll just isn't going to cut it.

aSwarmOfMidgies · 01/01/2024 16:30
  • 4 would be really early to eat for a New Year's Eve all night party so I don't make that assumption

It's too late for lunch and too early for evening meal isn't it ?

dottiedodah · 01/01/2024 16:39

I dont think it sounds enough TBH. 12 bread rolls between 8 adults is less than 2 apiece, I would have done 2 or 3 french sticks as well maybe? Thing is when people are at a function they like to eat well ,maybe talking and munching at the same time! Just some more bread sticks .Jacket potatoes that kind of thing fills everyone up!

caringcarer · 01/01/2024 17:13

No ody eats 1 DC ough vall. Most would want 2-3.
Teens eat loads.

Don't feel bad you'll know for next time 2-3 rolls per person, 2-3 dough balls per person, an extra large pizza. Add some dessert.

Crunchymum · 01/01/2024 17:21

Has everyone left already? 😮

Or are you posting mid buffet? 🤔

Always over cater.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 01/01/2024 17:30

That’s not enough for 8. What about the quiche for those that don’t eat pizza? More rolls were definitely needed. Proper cheese board with grapes, sausage rolls. I’m hungry now 😂

ThreeTreeHill · 01/01/2024 17:57

I suppose 4pm as well people might skip lunch so be extra hungry

I also find at these events some people can be very selfish and take over their share of food. With that amount of food it okay takes 1 person to pile their plate and then there's no much left

Yerroblemom1923 · 01/01/2024 18:05

I guess maybe 16+ rolls to allow for 2 each. It would be plenty for me but I'm conscious of how people overfill their plates at these events so I don't.
Buffets seem to bring out the greed in people and they don't seem to think if there will be enough for everyone or if the host has any spare to replenish the buffet etc etc

Combusting · 01/01/2024 18:09

No I’m sorry but this isn’t enough. One packet of cold meats between 12,, and such a small amount of rolls and dough balls - no way.

margotrose · 01/01/2024 18:13

I don't think it was enough food, sorry. I would have gone with:

750g ham
16 bread rolls (at least, maybe 24 just to be safe)
Enough Chinese pastries for 5-6 per person.
4 large pizzas (half a pizza per person).
Enough garlic dough balls for 4-5 per person.
Two bowls of salad with cous cous
5 bowls of nibbles
Bread sticks and humous
At least 4-5 packets of cured meats
Cheese
Olives
Condiments/pickles

Plus an option for something sweet - 2-3 desserts plus fruit. It's always better to over-cater.

Namchanged · 01/01/2024 18:14

I don’t think it was enough and those are insubstantial snacks you should’ve just done an actual lunch and a desert

CatherinedeBourgh · 01/01/2024 18:15

There was enough for everyone to have 1/4 of a pizza, 1 and 1/2 bread rolls, 1 and 1/2 dough balls and a few chinese pastries, plus some other bits.

Would be plenty for me, but wouldn't begin to touch the sides for my teenage dc.

How does anyone eat 1/2 a doughball? Confused

I agee with those saying it wasn't enough.

But who goes to a buffet and does a head count and quick divvying up maths, portioning out half rolls and doughballs per person?

We're not talking about people emptying platters into carrier bags here, just guests filling their plates.

funny time of year, though, isn't it? Lots of people are out of their usual routine. Having big lie ins, eating breakfast v late. So maybe they skipped lunch altogether and were starving by 4pm.

thedementedelf · 01/01/2024 18:28

Not enough, I would have done double that.

Icantbedoingwithit · 01/01/2024 18:32

Yes I would have easily doubled that. That’s sparse pickings for a group of 8!!

Starzinsky · 01/01/2024 18:35

Doesn't sound enough depending on the crowd. Some people i.e. teens could probably eat a whole pizza to themselves.

FourLeggedBuckers · 01/01/2024 18:39

I’m baffled by the budget of one and a half dough balls per guest. Who on earth is eating dough balls by the half - or in the singular. The same applies to the ham rolls, but that’s still marginally less bizarre than the one and a half dough ball situation.

I don’t think it’s anything like enough food for 8 adults at a NYE buffet.

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/01/2024 18:43

I think it was fine but on the light side.
