Enough food??

autienotnaughty · 01/01/2024 14:49

Buffet for 8 adults-

750g ham
12 bread rolls
24 Chinese pastry's
2 large pizza cut in to 12 pieces each
12 garlic dough balls
Bowl of salad with cous cous
5 bowls of nibbles
Bread sticks and humous
Packet of cured meats
Cheese
Olives
Condiments/pickles

Was this enough? I thought it was loads but it went so quickly. I had extra snacks to replenish the bowls but I felt bad there wasn't more food. Everyone said it was great but usually a buffet doesn't empty instantly. We ate at 4pm .
Aibu to think I supplied enough food?

A bit more bread or some crackers.
If 'cheese mean a generous cheeseboard/massive stilton then fine.
I'd stick something sweet - cake or whateverin there too

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 15:20

I don't like ham so would have eaten more pizza as there was nothing to go in my roll.

I would always rather have too much and eat/send people home with leftovers than for people to be hungry and to look like a skinflint.

Also with a buffet and people drinking, there'll usually be a return visit to pick at bits later.

We had roughly those quantities , plus a bowl of potatoe salad and a plate of fish and some puddings

lots left over
20 people

So one example plate at a minimum...

Ham roll
3 Chinese pastries
3 slices pizza
1 garlic doughball
Salad and couscous
Few bread sticks and houmous
Some crisps
Bit of cheese and some olives
Few pieces of salami

That is plenty of food in surprised at these replies (and I eat a lot)

Sounds like a right party 🎉

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 01/01/2024 15:22

I would have got more bread plus cheese and crackers to be honest - we eat 2 large pizzas between 3 of us Confused

Are all your friends sparrows or competitive under eaters?

Maybe I'm just a greedy bastard though, I love a buffet

I've gone to funerals just for the buffet. Yeah, I'll burn in hell 🤷‍♀️

SweetFemaleAttitude · 01/01/2024 15:23

I can't actually believe the cous cous and salad went!

aSwarmOfMidgies · 01/01/2024 15:23

I'd eat half a large pizza myself

But not with all the other stuff available

Sorry I missed the cheese down the list. Were there crackers too?

idontlikealdi · 01/01/2024 15:25

It seems light. 750g ham seems very small for 8 when it's the main item, and I would have had two rolls per person.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 01/01/2024 15:25

I also would have doubled the dough balls so 3 each - yes we are piggies here!

I'm cooking 2 frozen pizzas currently for just us 2

aSwarmOfMidgies · 01/01/2024 15:26

Sparrows ? No some of them are rather large but not all

There was enough for everyone to fill plates twice and to fill pudding bowls twice but most only wanted one plate for their meal

That's normal not competitive eating.

idontlikealdi · 01/01/2024 15:27

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2024 15:05

I had similar when I did the buffet for my sons christening!

Obviously a lot more people but fuck me the food went straight away! I was gobsmacked! I had done:

Large slow cooker of veg chilli
Large slow cooker of chilli con carne
2 x corned beef pies (plate pies)
2 x bacon and egg pies
Large bowl of tomato pasta salad
Large bowl of tuna pasta salad (mixing bowel sized)
Platter of sausage rolls
6 large pizzas
Platter of vegan pastries
2 loaves of bread (the fancy sliced ones)
Crackers x 3 boxes
Selection of cheese
Selection of pate
Platter of deli meats
Salads
Doritos and dips
Breadsticks
Plus a platter each of egg mayo, cheese and ham and pease pudding sandwiches

Think there were about 60 people there!

I was so shocked! I now always over cater and tbh there's still never a lot left!

That doesn't sound like much for 60 either!

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2024 15:29

@idontlikealdi it covered 2 massive tables in the social club!

penjil · 01/01/2024 15:32

SweetFemaleAttitude · 01/01/2024 15:23

Oh, I'll always eat the couscous at a buffet!

And the rice dishes too!

Yum!

penjil · 01/01/2024 15:33

OP, I think you should have doubled the amount of everything you had.

greasypolemonkeyman · 01/01/2024 15:35

A basic rule type of thing for a light buffet is 8 pieces per person but in reality it's more like 12 pieces per person. But you say you started early, for me if it was a long party then I'd be supplying 24-30 pieces per person to cover the entire 8-9 hours.

My Boxing Day buffet was a 3.5kg ham, 60 mini spring rolls, 4 packets of deli meats, 3 different cheeses with 4 types of crackers, pate, pickles, col slaw, 850g chicken poppers, a prawn ring, 2 sausage roll wreaths, a baked cheese dip and crudités, prawn toast, pasta salad, crisps, filled baked potato skins, filled toad in the holes, 60 assorted flavour chicken skewers, a few12 inch pizzas, a giant clementine cheese cake, a colin the caterpillar. Loads of soft drinks and booze provided. That was for 10 adults and 8 kids. It all went between 2 -10pm

RosesAndHellebores · 01/01/2024 15:36

750g of ham is 12oz so 1.5oz each
What are Chinese pastries?
How much cheese and what types?
How much salad and what was in it?
How much continental meat?
Pizzas cut into 12 so 24 small slices - 3/8th s each
1.5 rolls each - no idea how big they were
1.25 dough balls each

I'd have doubled the ham, probably doubled the continental meats, laid on a large cheese board with Stilton, Brie, Cheddar (large pieces), added some chicken, some grapes, some cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and olive skewers, had some anti-pasti and coleslaw, a large mixed salad, two or three sliced French sticks, bowl of cocktail sausages and probably mini quiche or sausage rolls, crackers and some cake or a trifle. And nothing would have been counted.

I'd have ditched the pizza, doughballs and Chinese pastries.

PollyOrange · 01/01/2024 15:43

I think it always depends on the guest
Work buffets in my old job, there was a guy who was tone deaf and would have a mountain high plate and it would often run out but still, he went in early and took loads.
Parents ? Eat like sparrows. Any teens there , I'd do a medium pizza worth each as that's what they'd nail. It's tricky

Six pizzas for 60 people is not enough!

Op that does not sound like enough food. 12 rolls is way too stingy.

I have never heard of a Chinese pastry!

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2024 15:51

@RescueRespect erm there were 2 massive tables filled with food!

I probs had more than I listed but it was a bit ago!

I also later found out that some people had helped themselves to two plates at once which is obviously just greed!

Pifful · 01/01/2024 16:00

I did a buffet for 8 adults on Thursday. There was a 17 year old boy who ate roughly 3 times more than any other adult. There was some ham, a bit of quiche and salad leftover.

10 Sausage rolls
Large Quiche
Honey roast Ham -2k
Warm bread, lots of it. A large 800g crusty loaf plus 6 rolls
Coleslaw
Salad Bowl
Carrot and cucumber sticks
tomatoes
Chutneys
Tzatziki
Hummus
Cheesecake
Plum bread

4pm is an odd time though? Had they all missed lunch and were starving?

AngelicInnocent · 01/01/2024 16:02

Agree you definitely needed more ham and rolls and more dough balls. I would also serve some form of hot potato. Maybe potato skins or wedges or something.

That doesn't sound like much at all. Not even enough rolls for one each.
People expect more than a sausage roll, a sandwich and salad at a buffet.
