We were supposed to be visiting family for a few days to celebrate the new year.
However, they called this morning to say they have fallen ill with a tummy bug. I'm glad they let us know. We wouldn't want to visit and catch anything. We also don't want to disturb them whilst they are ill.
However, we hardly have any food in the house.
I put an anonymous post on Facebook asking what shops are open today as we now need to get supplies in. I didn't give any details as I don't want to announce to the world that my inlaws have a funny tummy.
I had tried googling but wasn't sure if opening times would be different with it being New Year's Day. We are in Scotland so this is a holiday.
We can just about scrape together enough for today but it will be a bit rubbish. Pot noodles, cuppa soup, beige freezer food.
My husband has shouted at me that we should just make do. I shouldn't have announced it to Facebook.
It was anonymous so I didn't announce anything.
None of us are ill. And what we have in the house won't satisfy the appetite of him or the kids so I was just going to get more to eat plus some bread and milk.
He is now sulking saying we shouldn't be enjoying ourselves if the other family members are ill. I think this is ridiculous.
Am i missing something here or is he being ridiculous?
I'm going to go to the local Asda and get stuff for the kids and I. He can eat pot noodles if he wants.

Google is NOT always up to date. As a wild goose chase around Pall Mall trying to find Google mentioned Seafood restaurant proved on Saturday.

Yes but if the op doesn’t know then how do they expect others to know? Maybe look on the shop’s own facebook page to see their updated information?? Most shops (even the very small local convenience stores in my area) have facebook pages and post this information on there.

Really? What like a change of opening times on NYD? It’s some that can easily be found out either on google or check the shop’s own fb page 🤷‍♀️

We've already established that Google isn't 100% accurate all of the time. The shops own fb page fair enough but meh I can't get bothered to get worked up about it.

Of course it would have been easier to google. Nothing wrong in asking but it does seem like you were posting to draw attention to how your plans had fallen through, I can kind of see why he is annoyed.

an anonymous post how is that attention seeking

ThatSoddingCat · 01/01/2024 21:02

You asked on Facebook what shops were open? Bloody hell, you could have -
Google shop opening times
Gone to the shops
Just mad do with what you'd got in

Hesma · 01/01/2024 21:19

Your fb post would bug me too if I were him. Just do like most sane people and find out without boring fb

Asking on fb at all what time a shop is open is attention seeking imo! So many people posting on facebook asking random stuff that can easily be found out on google. Not sure about the op but even to post on my local area facebook group you can be waiting hours for the post to be approved by an admin so in that time you could have just looked it up yourself. I actually think some people enjoy others doing their work for them and giving their post some attention on fb, even if it is an anonymous post and they have to wait for it to be approved.

My issue here is the idea of not belong able to make a decent meal from store cupboard ingredients. That is weird.

Depends on your income/storage and if you want something a bit nicer because it's NYD.

The only shop local to me that you know is open is the Tesco express. Lidl/Aldi etc were on special opening hours and Google is no help.

TotHappy · 01/01/2024 23:41

Ffs she just wanted some fresh food and asked if anyone knew where to get it! So what if it was lazy? So what if she could have got the information another way? So what if the nutritional detriment of not having fresh food in the next 24 hours was minimal? So what if attention was sought? You might as well say that seeking to communicate in any way with other humans is attention seeking.

She asked, someone answered. She didn't put a gun to their head. Must everything be accomplished in the most time and energy efficient way possible?

You're not wrong, OP, your husband (and many posters here!) was being inexplicably ridiculous and a twat.

Jesus Christ, it’s not like you have to pay in blood for each Facebook post. What did OP lose by posting? Who did it harm? You sound as nuts as her husband.

If you want to make a meal from store cupboard ingredients, go ahead. Make as many as you like. Why does it bother you that someone else didn’t want to?

evilharpy · 02/01/2024 01:36

Good lord there are some incredibly dense people posting in this thread.

Google is not always accurate for opening hours outside of the norm.
Shops do not always update their facebook pages.
Shops do not always have a facebook page.

I needed something in a shop 6 miles away over Christmas. I checked both the infrequently-updated facebook page AND google before setting off, both of which said it was open. When I got there it was closed and someone in a neighbouring shop told me they wouldn't be open again till the 2nd. I'd have been better off asking in the local FB page.

Also:

Posting anonymously in a FB page to obtain local knowledge which is usually up to date and accurate is NOT attention seeking (seriously, how on earth can you come to that conclusion?)

An anonymous facebook post requesting information is NOT an announcement of any kind
