We were supposed to be visiting family for a few days to celebrate the new year.
However, they called this morning to say they have fallen ill with a tummy bug. I'm glad they let us know. We wouldn't want to visit and catch anything. We also don't want to disturb them whilst they are ill.
However, we hardly have any food in the house.
I put an anonymous post on Facebook asking what shops are open today as we now need to get supplies in. I didn't give any details as I don't want to announce to the world that my inlaws have a funny tummy.
I had tried googling but wasn't sure if opening times would be different with it being New Year's Day. We are in Scotland so this is a holiday.
We can just about scrape together enough for today but it will be a bit rubbish. Pot noodles, cuppa soup, beige freezer food.
My husband has shouted at me that we should just make do. I shouldn't have announced it to Facebook.
It was anonymous so I didn't announce anything.
None of us are ill. And what we have in the house won't satisfy the appetite of him or the kids so I was just going to get more to eat plus some bread and milk.
He is now sulking saying we shouldn't be enjoying ourselves if the other family members are ill. I think this is ridiculous.
Am i missing something here or is he being ridiculous?
I'm going to go to the local Asda and get stuff for the kids and I. He can eat pot noodles if he wants.

I work in a supermarket. We have a sodding ENORMOUS A frame outside with our opening hours over Christmas and New Year and still get people ringing up or coming in to ask what our opening hours are!

Sorry OP. Thank you for the opportunity to express my ire. And your DH is an idiot - why should you all suffer just because people elsewhere are ill? Sounds like he's disappointed at not being able to visit and is taking it out on you, though.

What's wrong with someone phoning in to ask? They aren't outside the store so they can't see your ENORMOUS A frame with the opening hours.

It also takes more time to type “Just Google it FFS” or similar than it does to just ignore the post. Aren’t these people also deliberately drawing attention to themselves?

I doubt they are! Probably just either pissed off or find it a joke that they even posted to ask such a question in the first place. I refrain from commenting on those type of posts but if I was to comment it would be to just take the piss!

Where do you live where all supermarkets are closed?

I live in a town with at least one each of Aldi, Asda, co-op, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's and the only ones that are closed are Aldi - all the rest are open just on shorter hours than normal.

the supermarket I work in only closes two days a year - Christmas Day and Easter Sunday - and that's because they are legally required to, we're open the other 363 days of the year.

Ireland.
Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Dunnes, Supervalu - all closed today.

Tawlk · 01/01/2024 14:29

I’d just get in the car go for a spin and see what shop is open, buy something to cook something and leave your hubby at home to have pot noodle, wouldn’t be cooking him anything 😂😂😂

Theunamedcat · 01/01/2024 14:31

In the village I used to live in the shop would shut we all needed to drive 20ish miles to the next one which also might be shut so a Facebook post making sure it was open was the best option so we could drive 25 miles in the OPPOSITE direction to find an open shop

Most websites say these times aren't guaranteed I tried to find a chemist open over Christmas the NHS websites telling me bank holidays might effect opening hours and to ring 111 (or 999 in an emergency) but we have been encouraged to use the chemist INSTEAD of calling 111 pointless utterly pointless

Google said "these opening hours maybe changed due to the festive period"
So I thought a quick ask on Facebook might be quicker. Usually I would just google. However, I know lots of stores have different timings at this time of year and might not necessarily have updated that information on websites.
Been stung with that before trying to find a pharmacy for eye drops for conjunctivitis on Boxing Day one year.

Yes, but if you go to the actual company website most have updated to specifically say their festive opening hours - but google doesn’t scrape this as accurately.

elfintinsel · 01/01/2024 14:44

@randomuser2021 "Im sure every supermarket also has on their own website opening hours and they usually also have a special bit for christmas opening hours.

It is alarming how utterly incapable of doing very minor research some people are. You may have to click a link or two once googling to get an accurate answer!"
I just wanted a quick answer not going through each shop I could think of. I'm not incapable just wanted quick answers. Our local mums Facebook page is quite useful for that sort of info. It also told me which roads were ok after the storm damage midweek.
I got the answer. It was anonymous so in-laws privacy intact.
As previous poster said, my local stores in our village are shut as is the slightly bigger one in the next town. I've had to go a bit further to a different town as they have Asda and Sainsbury that are open.
DH saw me come in with a big shop and put down his pot noodle.

Glad you got sorted! Enjoy your dinner. Tell your DH to keep eating his pot noddle that he’s not getting any of the good stuff 😂x

Can you go and buy food that only you and the children like? Maybe he can have some miserable gruel.

You do realise that a lot of the people who respond to your post probably go on google and google it themselves to give you the answer? Or that’s what I’ve found on my local fb group anyway.

Sorry if you’re in the minority, I don’t agree you should have been spoken to the way you was for doing so, however I just find such posts on fb very attention seeking, extremely lazy and annoying plus getting everyone else to do your google work for you for the sake of you not clicking on a couple of links to get the info yourself! Surely it would take longer to wait for people to reply!

noctu · 01/01/2024 14:52

What a fuss over nothing. Don't you have anything in the cupboards e.g. a bag of pasta and a jar of pasta sauce?

LegoDeathTrap · 01/01/2024 12:22

Googling is more reliable. There’s indeed no need to announce every minor ailment to the world. Shouting at your partner for a minor disagreement is pretty shit.

She wasn't sure whether the opening times had been adjusted for NYD or not.

she only asked if anyone knew which shops were open today.

she didn't announce any ailment!!

@elfintinsel he's being a complete and utter tit on all counts!

is he hung over or is he always this much of a twat?

it's a shame you're so far away. You & DC would be welcome to come & help me eat 'Christmas' food & we could put together some actual food for them too!

id take the DC out somewhere then bring back food OR just send his grumpy arse back to bed!!

You husband was being ridiculous. Local FB pages around here would also have the answer to such a question very quickly.

I laughed when you said your husband immediately put his pot noodle down when he saw you had 'real food' now. Hopefully he's gotten over himself.

@noctu

if you'd bothered yourself to read her posts, you'd know what she had in. She wanted something nicer for today AND stuff like milk, for the morning. She was happy to go to the shop, she wasn't asking grumpy twat to go, she just asked anonymously on Facebook if anyone knew what shops were open.

The thing is, if the person who posts on fb doesn’t know themselves whether or not the opening times have been adjusted for NYD then how do they expect other random people on facebook to know? The majority of posts I see like this, unless the people who respond actually work in that particular shop, then the rest of the people who actually take time to reply are those who have ran off to google themselves like a lapdog to find the answer for the person asking the question! It’s just lazy imo! And as I said earlier, somewhat attention seeking when the answers can easily be found on google or even the shop’s own facebook page if they have one.

She should eat pasta and sauce and be glad of it!

lesdeluges · 01/01/2024 17:52

I use google maps. Look for the place I want, shop, restaurant etc. and when I click on the one I want it tells me if it is open or not, and if not, when it will reopen. I'm sure most of you know this, but just in case.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 01/01/2024 18:39

Google is NOT always up to date. As a wild goose chase around Pall Mall trying to find Google mentioned Seafood restaurant proved on Saturday.
