We were supposed to be visiting family for a few days to celebrate the new year.
However, they called this morning to say they have fallen ill with a tummy bug. I'm glad they let us know. We wouldn't want to visit and catch anything. We also don't want to disturb them whilst they are ill.
However, we hardly have any food in the house.
I put an anonymous post on Facebook asking what shops are open today as we now need to get supplies in. I didn't give any details as I don't want to announce to the world that my inlaws have a funny tummy.
I had tried googling but wasn't sure if opening times would be different with it being New Year's Day. We are in Scotland so this is a holiday.
We can just about scrape together enough for today but it will be a bit rubbish. Pot noodles, cuppa soup, beige freezer food.
My husband has shouted at me that we should just make do. I shouldn't have announced it to Facebook.
It was anonymous so I didn't announce anything.
None of us are ill. And what we have in the house won't satisfy the appetite of him or the kids so I was just going to get more to eat plus some bread and milk.
He is now sulking saying we shouldn't be enjoying ourselves if the other family members are ill. I think this is ridiculous.
Am i missing something here or is he being ridiculous?
I'm going to go to the local Asda and get stuff for the kids and I. He can eat pot noodles if he wants.

The people coming in to ask are being annoying but obviously people are going to phone. They can’t see the board outside can they, doesn’t matter how big it is.

Exactly. It’s amazing how snarky someone who works in a supermarket is about being asked the opening hours of said supermarket.

TeaKitten · 01/01/2024 13:16

Cosycover · 01/01/2024 13:14

The supermarkets will be open. Just go get stuff.

The vast majority of supermarkets are shut today, hence the point in her asking.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 01/01/2024 13:16

Anyone who does this on my local Facebook groups get a load of (justified imo) stupid replies, if you can post on FB you can Google the opening hours of the shop but that aised your husband is being a knobhead, is that unusual behaviour for him?

You say they’re justified, but what do these people get out of these replies? Why go to the bother of typing out “Why didn’t you just Google it?” or similar? It can’t be that hard to scroll past.

StockpotSoup · 01/01/2024 13:19

Xis · 01/01/2024 13:12

Do you spend a lot of time on Facebook, because the most obvious first move would be to go to the website of your local supermarket and check for the seasonal opening hours. They are usually listed.

But why would OP’s husband throw a strop because she didn’t do that?

TheSquareMile · 01/01/2024 13:20

Can you get a Tesco Whoosh delivery this afternoon, to get in the food you need for the rest of the day?

Xis · 01/01/2024 13:22

I don’t see how an anonymous Facebook post could possibly have done any harm. You’ll likely get more accurate replies than Google. (I got caught out myself just last week with the Google results saying somewhere was open when it was not.)

A Facebook post is unlikely to have done harm but I disagree that’s it’s likely to be more accurate. People LOVE to give their opinions about anything and everything regardless of accuracy. I’ve seen people confidently post all sorts of nonsense on Mumsnet. Getting the information from the horse’s mouth is your best bet.

God just eat what you have, you sound like you have plenty. Does every meal need to be a feast? You have freezer food for a reason

Christ, what a misery guts. It’s New Year’s Day. Maybe OP thought her kids might be disappointed at missing out on the trip to see family and a bit of a treat might cheer them up. Their favourite tea and a nice pudding doesn’t constitute a “feast”.

Maybe you and OP’s husband would be well suited. You could put your hair shirts on, share a pot noodle and make a toast with tepid water to having never embarrassed yourselves by asking a question on Facebook.

I don’t know, I can’t answer for him.

I know you can’t - but you seem to have some issue with the OP having used Facebook, so I thought maybe you had some theory on his motivation for this hissy fit. Is posting on Facebook inherently bad?

I mean we've just had Christmas I'm sure having chicken nuggets won't be too traumatic

StockpotSoup · 01/01/2024 13:31

There you go again. No one suggested it would be “traumatic”. And is something not being traumatic really the best anyone should expect?

I think it isn’t great for accurate information but if you’re having a natter on Facebook and it’s part of that, then it’s perfectly appropriate.

LittleGreenDragons · 01/01/2024 13:35

You have bigger problems than food...

What's he like the rest of the year?

Where do you live where all supermarkets are closed?

I live in a town with at least one each of Aldi, Asda, co-op, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's and the only ones that are closed are Aldi - all the rest are open just on shorter hours than normal.

the supermarket I work in only closes two days a year - Christmas Day and Easter Sunday - and that's because they are legally required to, we're open the other 363 days of the year.

ManateeFair · 01/01/2024 13:46

Your husband is a dickhead.

If you need to check opening hours, though, you don’t need Facebook. Just go to the supermarket’s actual website and check rather than just looking at the Google listing.

willWillSmithsmith · 01/01/2024 13:52

I’ve never heard of a ban on enjoying yourself because another family member somewhere else has a tummy bug, quite an odd outlook. I don’t do fb so no idea about the do’s and don’ts about that. I’d just go to the supermarket and tell your dh he’s being a knob.

elfintinsel · 01/01/2024 14:14

So turns out my local supermarkets are shut. I needed to go to the city to get one open. I usually use Tesco or Aldi as they are closer but it had to be Asda today. Not a big deal but at least I knew where I was heading. We are fairly rural but not middle of nowhere.
We had bits and pieces in the freezer but one person would be having chicken nuggets, one person a piece of fish, one person fish fingers and one person a chicken Kiev. Not a disaster but I would rather just go get some supplies than scrape together stuff.
I had pretty much emptied the freezer pre Christmas to get stuff for Christmas in it. We have used all that.
We definitely need milk, bread and some juice. Yes, we could survive on water but we don't have to just survive.
The kids would have been happy to just eat crisps and sweeties but I didn't fancy that.
DH is still grumpy but I think this is because of worrying about elderly parents being ill and missing seeing some extended family. Can't be helped though and we will rearrange plans once they are all feeling better.
I'm just glad we didnt go up yesterday and catch the bug like BiL and his family.

Completely agree with this! Sick of seeing posts on our local fb group saying “does anyone know if xyz is open”!
They do get replies like “check google” and laughing emojis on their posts! I just think such people are attention seekers who cannot go a day without posting some daft shit on fb to draw some sort of attention to themselves, even posting on a local facebook group means they’re in the limelight for a few minutes (even if it is only online).
Everyone knows what google is and how to use it! No need to post on facebook! It takes more time to post and wait for replies than it does googling which will take seconds!

Shouting at you about it was wrong

But my pet peeve is people on Facebook asking what they could easily google. But that's not an excuse to shout at you.

All of this.

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 01/01/2024 14:19

Scottish Coops are open, if you're near one of those.

It also takes more time to type “Just Google it FFS” or similar than it does to just ignore the post. Aren’t these people also deliberately drawing attention to themselves?

Timeandtune · 01/01/2024 14:23

We are in Scotland ( East Dun) and the M&Ss attached to petrol stations are open.
