Christmas decorations

I want to remove the Christmas decorations today but DC are desperate for them to be up longer.

AIBU to insist at least the tree - which we got the first week of December (and has been dropping from day 1!) - is removed, even if the twinkly lights outside the house stay a while longer?

Got me wondering, if all the kids are back in school tomorrow then when will everyone take down decorations?

Not before Twelfth Night here but I would love to keep them until Candlemas!

We did that one year - just after the lockdown Christmas, to cheer ourselves up as we hadn't been able to get the family together over the holiday and it all felt a bit crap. It was nice at first, but then the tree started to smell funny despite keeping its needles well (think it was the water in the tub) and we were really glad to pack everything up on 2 February! I think of that now each year when I feel sad about clearing away on 5 January.

I took our tree down before new year. We had such a rubbish Christmas and I just felt like I couldn’t wait to see the back of it all.

ZittiEBuoni · 02/01/2024 12:34

Mine stay until twelfth night. I also keep some elements - greenery, white candles, some little star lights - up until candlemas (Feb 1) since January is so depressing.

Our tree and wreath will be up until Epiphany and I might leave the extra fairy lights up until Candlemas if I can persuade DH.

Peckahminn11 · 02/01/2024 12:35

Ours will be going down tomorrow along with doing the housework

BoobyDazzler · 02/01/2024 12:35

Mine came down on the 30th. I was sick of watching the TV through the branches and not being to see out of my window. I can’t imagine wanting them for two weeks after Christmas.

We normally leave up until the 5th, which is the epiphany and when the wise men arrived but will just see which evening this week we get chance to do it.

The best bit of Xmas imo is the time between Xmas and new year so I’m in no rush to leave the Xmas bubble.

I always leave up one thing for the 5th,it was what my mother did.

Thin them out stealthily.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/01/2024 12:44

I'm going to take a few down tonight but the tree will stay up till 12th Night.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/01/2024 12:47

We leave everything until 12th night, as per tradition. We don't usually put it up until a week or so before Christmas but it went up earlier in December this year, at dd's request.

Cards have been recycled and the stockings, ornaments and door wreath came down today.
I'll take down the sitting room tree and the lights in the conservatory tomorrow.

Mine will be up another week. It's only in the quiet period after Christmas that you can really enjoy them.

😱😱😱what? Past 12th night? All that back luck? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Appleofmyeye2023 · 02/01/2024 12:51

I’m all for waiting till 12th night. But I took them down on NY day as wanted to clean the house after numerous Xmas and new year guests.
I like when they go up
But I also like when they come down, you do a major clean and house looks nice and tidy, fresh and uncluttered to start new year.

But then I’ve no kids at home any more…

I think we always took down day before term started when they were at school …

Only if you believe in it. There's another tradition that you leave them up till Candlemas.

We have a family birthday just after 12th night, so we've always left them up for that. After all, the alternative is to have boxes sitting in the hallway waiting to be stashed up into the attic.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 02/01/2024 19:09

I once kept my tree up later than the twelfth night out of sheer laziness.

Worst year ever! I will never test it again!
