Christmas decorations

I want to remove the Christmas decorations today but DC are desperate for them to be up longer.

AIBU to insist at least the tree - which we got the first week of December (and has been dropping from day 1!) - is removed, even if the twinkly lights outside the house stay a while longer?

Got me wondering, if all the kids are back in school tomorrow then when will everyone take down decorations?

Mines coming down Friday or Saturday, I don't understand houses that look clean & tidy with the tree down 🤣was it not tidy or clean before? You just dust & hoover round the tree right?

My friend takes hers down Boxing Day as her husband has ocd and he is a nightmare unless it comes down the day after Christmas, a bit joyless for their child I think.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 01/01/2024 21:09

Definitely not today and we sometimes get snow in January!

Ours went up mid December though.

Mine will be up another week. It's only in the quiet period after Christmas that you can really enjoy them.

I agree with you, was lovely this afternoon curled up on sofa watching a film, very sparkly and cosy with just me here

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/01/2024 21:11

Wv is back to work tomorrow bar me so I have two days to enjoy alone.Oh and my house is very clean and tidy. Just with beautiful lights, tree and decorations.

Desecratedcoconut · 01/01/2024 21:12

Oh, come on, people just mean uncluttered and back to usual. Everything in its place, kind of thing.

MadCatLady27 · 01/01/2024 21:22

No children here

Everything came down Friday, because I'm back at work tomorrow, and the lounge where it was was the last room I had left to clean, but wanted to spend the last few days of our time off relaxing not cleaning or tidying

It's depressing going back to work and having it all up makes it worse as reminds me of it being over so quickly

MrsKarlUrban · 01/01/2024 21:29

We took ours down today, earlier than I was going to but looks like we have a house viewing so wanted to get it all sorted. Left my wreath out the front door though- till the 6th

AthenaWhite · 02/01/2024 07:40

Took them down on the 31st but replaced them with this sparkle tree. I still have bowls of baubles and lights and candles everywhere.

Mine will be over the weekend. Before kids go back to school. They didn't stop until Friday 23rd.

Maray1967 · 02/01/2024 07:47

12th night is 5/6 January so mine come down on the 6th. I will get rid of the cards today though, but my tree is doing ok, still plenty of needles on it so no reason to take it down yet. DS is not back at school until the 8th but even when he goes back before the 6th I still don’t take the tree down before the 6th.

Maray1967 · 02/01/2024 07:48

Late return to school is because they didn’t break up until Friday 22nd, latest ever.

user1469095927 · 02/01/2024 07:51

I started taking some of our decorations down on the 30th and yesterday. The tinsel round the staircase kept getting pulled and I put some of the ornaments away. Kids not back until 8th but I am back to work on 4th and have some additional study to do so tree will also be down today but have agreed to keep lights up round windows.

NewYearAnotherNamechange · 02/01/2024 07:53

Mine will be up until the 13th 😱. We’re away until the 9th and then straight back to work so it will be the first weekend we have got time.

LadyBird1973 · 02/01/2024 08:00

@AthenaWhite I love your sparkle tree. I think I'm going to get one too.

I still have lots of fairy lights around the house - these stay up all year because they are so pretty.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/01/2024 10:11

We put ours up on Christmas week, usually around 19th, and take it down on 6th, as per tradition. Do what you and your family prefer, though.

Our tree has not dropped one needle ..has been up since about 7th December! Most decs packed away but tree will have to wait until Thursday because we need our son to help get it outside.

It's a mystery. Last year's tree was cheaper and didn't drop at all, but this year, £10 more, and it dropped badly from day one. It's been the worst I’ve ever had!

Man on telly said candlemas is February.
I can't understand needle dropped fuss. It only drops under the tree.
We had the needle in drop tree this year and it's been absolutely fine so far far... Needle drop I think is part of Christmas. It's not a big deal.

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/01/2024 11:56

Nordman fir don’t drop. Ours is away from radiators and fires and top up with water when needed. Got it on 10th ish weekend. Was £35 for a 6ft. So wet and dark out so enjoying my last couple of days off work with the tree up and everyone else at work(adult dc)

RM2013 · 02/01/2024 11:58

Taking mine down today. DH always used to insist it was bad luck to remove before 12th night but I just get fed up with them so looking forward to getting everywhere looking neat and tidy again

WhatNoRaisins · 02/01/2024 11:58

I know a lot of people who have had really bad luck with their real trees this year. Some just looked half naked by Christmas day.

MadWifeInTheAttic · 02/01/2024 11:59

May or so. Sometimes June or July.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 02/01/2024 12:19

They'll come down on 6th, then I have the weekend to have a good clean and start the first 'real' week of Jan (for us, anyway) afresh.

stargirl1701 · 02/01/2024 12:23

Not before Twelfth Night here but I would love to keep them until Candlemas!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 02/01/2024 12:27

It's still Christmas. When Christmas ends is when we will take our decorations down!

Glitterblue · 02/01/2024 12:31

Ours usually stay up as close to 12th night as possible, work and school dependent. Ours
aren’t back until the 9th this year because the holidays didn’t start until the 22nd.
