Christmas decorations

I want to remove the Christmas decorations today but DC are desperate for them to be up longer.

AIBU to insist at least the tree - which we got the first week of December (and has been dropping from day 1!) - is removed, even if the twinkly lights outside the house stay a while longer?

Got me wondering, if all the kids are back in school tomorrow then when will everyone take down decorations?

Mine go back on the 9th

Wrongsideofpennines · 01/01/2024 20:28

Ours will stay up till the 5th. Because that's tradition, and because we only just got home from family and I swear the presents we left behind under it have multiplied while we were away.

RocksOn · 01/01/2024 20:29

We took ours down today, but I know I’ll get a long face when the youngest gets home. He’s 21!

Christmas seems entirely over by NY day.

Wellhellooooodear · 01/01/2024 20:31

I was going to take them down today but after our NYE party I don't have it in me so they'll be down tomorrow. Kids not back at school until Thursday.

Petrine · 01/01/2024 20:32

I took the tree down and most of the other indoor decorations. We still have lights outside but they’ll have to wait till it stops raining.

Lizzieregina · 01/01/2024 20:33

On the 12th day of Christmas, so the 6th.

doggiedude · 01/01/2024 20:35

Our tree has not dropped one needle ..has been up since about 7th December! Most decs packed away but tree will have to wait until Thursday because we need our son to help get it outside.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2024 20:36

I've taken the tree down but the icicles and window lights are still up. My dc goes back to school on 8th but dh is back to work tomorrow

confuseeedd · 01/01/2024 20:36

I always put mine up first weekend of December and enjoy a few weeks of Christmas films and coyness in the run up.
After Boxing day I'm done and want rid of them. It suddenly feels untidy and cluttered.
I like to start the new year and return to work/school with a clean house and everything put away.

Cherrysherbet · 01/01/2024 20:37

Dds birthday on Thursday , so decs will come down next weekend.

I’m in no rush.

SparkyBlue · 01/01/2024 20:38

We took ours down today. The kids aren't back until the 8th but I wanted to get the house back to normal. The decorations are all in the attic and I plan on giving the house a good proper clean tomorrow. We had lots of sicknesses as well so I just feel that the house seems grubby if that makes sense

Oh wow, is that 3 weeks holiday or a very late break up?

My DD will have almost 3 weeks off. Not sure how but it's bliss for her.

I will probably take them down a bit at a time from tomorrow as they need to be down before the 12th night otherwise the world ends.

I didn't actually get round to putting them all up this year as I normally have tinsel off the ceiling beams but I'm soooo lazy.

StrawberryWater · 01/01/2024 20:39

I usually keep mine up until 12th night but not this year. We’ve all been ill with covid so we were sick and tired of them so down they came today (and we wanted to taken them down on Boxing Day but no one had the strength).

ChilledToTheBone · 01/01/2024 20:42

Mine down before NYE. I have to see NY in fresh. I prefer the run up to xmas and all the fun things. Dc back to school tomorrow (2nd)

witte · 01/01/2024 20:43

I have to leave mine up as I'm superstitious and don't want any bad luck.

Might be nuts but I'm really lucky and want to keep that up Grin

Desecratedcoconut · 01/01/2024 20:44

Up till when, the sixth?

RosesAndHellebores · 01/01/2024 20:46

They come down on 12th night or the w/e before if it's on a Monday or Tuesday. However, they don't go up until a week before Christmas.

Sometimes I do it by degrees. Wreath, candle arrangements, modern twiggy tree get put away. The next day the baubles come off the trees and the Christmas card list and address book updated, the following day the lights come off and the trees go out. All done by 6th.

Pointlessuser · 01/01/2024 20:46

Mine probably won’t end up coming down till February, now feels to early but January is too busy and stressful for me to even think about taking them down

Goinggreymammy · 01/01/2024 20:53

Just put all the boxes in the attic. Took them down yesterday and washed & dried all the Christmas cushion covers, tablecloth, duvet covers, jumpers etc today so could finally pack them away too. It's earlier than usual for me, my kids are off all this week but didnt want to end up spending the week clearing away decorations.

MrsMiagi · 01/01/2024 20:55

Tree and all Dec's came down on 27th.

Topbird29 · 01/01/2024 20:55

Kids have inset day tomorrow, but back yo school wed. I have day off Friday, so will take down then and clean properly. Also have young farmers collecting the real tree on Sat or Sunday, so has to be outside by Friday evening. They went up on 2nd/3rd Dec as that's when got the tree from local scouts. Do like like having it all decorated and festive, but also want the space back and to do a deep clean!

pilates · 01/01/2024 20:59

Down and in the loft today.

It feels nice and clean 😀

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/01/2024 21:01

Next Saturday the 6th. Went up on 10th. Hasn’t dropped one needle. Nordman fir.

MrsMitford3 · 01/01/2024 21:02

Hmmmm.

Reading with interest. I have left everything up because house still full but the last of my DC (all 20 somethings) leaves tomorrow and I will start.
Tree being collected on the 5th so that motivates me.

I really decorate a lot and it is a monumental task to put it all away.

Makes me so sad to do it as I cherish the times when we are all under one roof and Christmas is really the only time that happens now. I am very sentimental and it does fly by so fast. For me I think the decorations are symbolic of the family time we get at christmas and I do cling a bit.

I know it is nice when it is done and the house is clean and I always get some tulips to bring a bit of Spring/hope in to the house but I am def feeling quite sad.

I want to tell me for next year that it's ok to put it up early december because I love it and it takes so long to do!!

dudsville · 01/01/2024 21:06

Over the last few days I've been collecting the odd up, making a little pile in readiness for my dive into the under stair cupboard for the storage boxes. Main tree and lights are still up and usually I'm itching to put them away, but it's not happening and i sit in the sofa wondering if I'll just be keeping it up all year. It's v unlike me.
