New year, new friends

Happy new year fellow Mumsnet people!
I was just contemplating a few things this morning but mainly fiends.
Over the years I've noticed many have drifted, shifted and dissipated! All of which is fine and normal as life happens.
But one that really bothered me was last week.
I was catching up with a friend who lives overseas so we don't talk often but I've known her over 20 years as we went to school together so we text often. Anyway, she sent me a message over Christmas sending regards and good wishes etc which we always do.
I sent her some family pictures of mine to which she said and I quote "you must have the oldest iPhone as your pictures are always so crappy and out of focus!"
I was shocked.. so I said sorry, and that they were taken at night. To which she responded with a shrug emoji and that they were always shit..!
Now I don't know if it's me but I think it's so extremely rude to make a comment like that?
I would never want to offend a friend by saying that. Even if I thought it I would have worded it differently.
How would you feel about it?

are you able to screen shot the exchange?

rochethenut · 01/01/2024 10:04

what was the picture of?

QueSyrahSyrah · 01/01/2024 10:05

Yeah that's a really weird and rude thing to say.

As it happens I have two friends whose pictures are always poor quality (presumably owing to their phones, or else they just don't care about composing them, which is fair enough) but I wouldn't in a million years dream of pointing it out!!

Mantling · 01/01/2024 10:06

Well, it was a weirdly rude comment, obviously, but I’m not sure what that has to do with the rest of your post — are you saying that at a time when many of your friendships have shifted or ended, this friend’s rude comment is enough for you to end a 20 year friendship?

NeedToChangeName · 01/01/2024 10:06

Of course it's rude

merrymelodies · 01/01/2024 10:07

Terrible remark to make. I would have shot back with sarcasm, and if she didn't apologise, I'd probably end the friendship. Wham, bam, thank you bitch!

SpringSparrow · 01/01/2024 10:10

Are your photos out of focus? My sil always takes out of focus pictures, missing feet and heads , I think she’s long sighted so doesn’t notice, and her phone is an android. I don’t think we have said anything to her, or maybe just laughed about it a bit. It was a shame when all the last birthday photos of a relative were out of focus though.

Christmaslights21 · 01/01/2024 10:26

I dunno, I wouldn’t be offended by this. Couldn’t bring myself to care. If it was true and I had a shitty relic of a phone, I would laugh along with her. If I had a newer phone I’d laugh at my shite photography skills.
weird to take this personally. You mention you’ve lost a lot of friends over the years. Do you fall out with people over things like this?

Really? You’d end a friendship over ONE comment?

mississippii · 01/01/2024 11:44

Sorry for late response. This is one of the photos. I've never added pics before so not sure if it will upload correctly... it doesn't look blurry to me.

lol, ok that one is blurry as I sent the wrong pic! It was forwarded to me!

Looks fine OP.

Yes it's rude

That's ridiculous of course it's rude to say and why would you laugh along with someone insulting you. Even if her photos aren't the best there's better ways of handling it then they way OP's 'friend' did

Astridspuzzle · 01/01/2024 11:49

Thankfully she's overseas and out of your hair. What a rubbish thing to say. Love the festive table in the photo.

squashi · 01/01/2024 11:49

Weird thing to say, but I don't think I'd be considering ending a friendship on that alone.

mississippii · 01/01/2024 11:50

Is this one blurry?

So strange, on my phone they look fine. But when I share them I can see that they're blurry.... does anyone know what I can do about it?

Christmaslights21 · 01/01/2024 12:05

@arewedoneyet because it’s not a personal insult and I haven’t got a massive stick up my arse? My friends and I take the piss out of each other all the time, most friendships are the same.
And yes OP those photos are blurry.

Mantling · 01/01/2024 12:07

I think it’s just not a very good photo, clarity aside — the lighting is poor, having the tv (is that Home Alone?😀) in the background makes the crop look odd if what you were photographing was a table decorated for Christmas dinner.

What I mean to say is that the photo doesn’t do the lovely, festive room justice. Not that I would have pointed this out as your blunt friend did, obviously, but some people can’t take good photos. DH’s uncle takes wonderful photos, regardless of whether he’s on his old iPhone or an expensive camera.

Get a new one with better camera 😀

iLovee · 01/01/2024 12:14

Those images are very low quality imo. What phone do you have?

Beatiful table setting btw 🥰

But context is everything and there's nothing to say in the OP that this was light hearted. More importantly, the OP didn't like it and whilst you don't agree that it should be interpreted rudely, equally I don't think it's fair for you to presume others should think the way you do.

Photos can lose quality when their uploaded / sent via WhatsApp.

girlfriend44 · 01/01/2024 12:36

Tactless and badly worded.
