New Years Day

To hate New Years Day.
Such a cliche. Pretty much one of the worst days of the year right??

I dunno. I mean, my house is a complete wreck from tonight, so its goi g to be a big day of cleaning up tomorrow, when all I wanna do is chill, watch Netflix and hang out with my ds. But, I've barely drunk so I'll be feeling fine.

One year we hosted a full on party. Nyd was horrendous. Dh and I could barely move we were so hungover. It was possibly one of the worst days of my life.

But I don't hate Nyd, just for being Nyd iyswim?

ilovesooty · 01/01/2024 01:11

I love NYD. All the festive crap is over, life is getting back to normal, yet I don't have to go to work.

10:15am NYD BBC2. One of the highlights of the year. New Years Day concert from Vienna. I will make sure I am up and dressed, get the coffee on and the pain au chocolat out and that's me happy for the rest of the morning.

Love it, a fresh new page to start a new year. I’m Scottish and it’s always been more important than Christmas.

‘Mon up!

Sleepandotherthings · 01/01/2024 02:01

I hate it too. Overhyped. Just any other day to me.
I hate the forced happy new year I end up having to say to everyone the first time I see them again.
Nothing changes at midnight, why should a 'new year' make any difference at all.

And I bloody detest auld lang syne!

(Extra irritable lately due to sleep deprivation🤐)

coxesorangepippin · 01/01/2024 02:01

Just get through it

Thank you! I'm going to be out but bookmarked to watch later.

mogsrus · 01/01/2024 03:52

Over hyped, like Christmas. Absolutely glad when it’s all over. No interest in any of it

Catsmere · 01/01/2024 03:59

I'm indifferent to it apart from being glad the Christmas season and associated commercial crap, and the potential for noise on NYE, is out of the way.

MinnieMountain · 01/01/2024 05:58

What cliches do you mean OP?

newoldfluff · 01/01/2024 06:08

Can you not just treat it like any other day?

UmaniCaroline · 01/01/2024 06:16

newoldfluff · 01/01/2024 06:08

Can you not just treat it like any other day?

Exactly. I like it for the reasons pp gave - fresh start etc. I like getting the new calendar filled in and sorting my diary out (& even fantasising about new year resolutions that never come to anything) but other than my own personal stuff, how is it any different to another day?

RunningAndSinging · 01/01/2024 06:25

I think there is quite a bit of freedom in New Years Day. No expectations like Christmas Day or NYE. I am doing parkrun which I love. Other years I have had a family lunch or gone to a pantomime or a walk or whatever you fancy really.

Maybe a late night to recover from and a house to tidy I guess makes it less fun.

rainpleasestop · 01/01/2024 06:41

I love it, extra ££££ at work Smile

Beezknees · 01/01/2024 06:48

I like it, prefer it to new year's eve. Always feels like a fresh start. I like going out for a walk, stopping off for a coffee, just relaxing.

Woahyeahyeahyeah · 01/01/2024 07:03

Sorry OP, but I love it! Especially if I haven't been out the Night before so feeling fresh. A whole new year of adventures, how exciting!

Thomasina79 · 01/01/2024 07:16

I’m indifferent. I used to love it when younger and felt slightly left out when youth had fled and we had no invites on NYE but now I don’t care and go to bed as usual. Strangely I did wake up at 12.00 last night and saw the fireworks.

whatever it’s a new year, time to maybe reassess. Personally I’m glass 2023 is over, it was a bit crap and hope for a sunny summer this year! I hope all your dreams come true!

doitwithlove · 01/01/2024 07:18

No hangover, work for me with the bonus of double time. Happy New Year 🎉

ElevenSeven · 01/01/2024 07:21

No, I love it, fresh starts etc. And as a PP said, there’s no expectation; you can spend it any way you want.

I think if there are other things going on in your life which aren’t perfect, NY (and Christmas) can throw this into focus.

But there’s nothing wrong with the day itself.

Sirzy · 01/01/2024 07:24

Surely it’s just another day and it’s up to you what you do with it?

I’m Scottish and hate New Years, Christmas is way better.

My parents generation were massively into New Years but I see it dying out among younger people. Hardly anyone I know is interested.

MrsRetriever · 01/01/2024 08:14

Love it. Tea & breakfast, then the weather’s looking decent so we’re going for a long walk to the pub. House is already quite tidy. Not back to work until Wednesday. Plans for next two weekends sorted already. What’s not to like?

SecondHandFurniture · 01/01/2024 08:14

I think traditionally we're supposed to bundle up in the "cold" and go for a walk, but it's warm, grey and pissing down for about the 5th year in a row. We've been off work/school since the 20th and taken it in turns to have Covid since so I am bored out of my mind. I've always had enough of the festive period by about the 29th!
