To hate New Years Day.
Such a cliche. Pretty much one of the worst days of the year right??

Same as any other Monday here...working.

electriclight · 01/01/2024 10:27

I love it. The decorations are all down and the house feels clean and fresh. It wasn't my turn to host last night so I woke up to a spotless house and it just feels like a new start. I'm just heading out for breakfast now and seeing other friends later. It feels like a new page, full of possibility.

newyearnewnothing · 01/01/2024 10:29

I'm having a roast and looking forward to watching the darts

cuddlebear · 01/01/2024 10:36

I love NYD!!

I don’t drink alcohol so don’t have to worry about hangovers. It’s a fresh start and everything seems possible.

I feel very positive and excited about the year to come.

EvesamtsirhC · 01/01/2024 10:39

We don't celebrate Hogmanay but NYD we always go to the inlaws for a big lunch. Its a nice chilled day with no expectations because everywhere is closed, just like Christmas.

Pourmeanotherwine · 01/01/2024 10:44

I normally work between Christmas and new year, then enjoy the 3 day weekend. Gives me a bit of time to get the house back in order after Christmas. Nice walk if the weather's good. No pressure to do anything specific, everyone has different traditions for new year.

Testina · 01/01/2024 10:47

I will never understand some people on MN 🤣
It’s just a day.
Make it what you want: big on tradition, your own small tradition, ignore it.
If you’re so moved to post that a day is a “cliché” on here, then it’s on you and your choices for it.

tinytemper66 · 01/01/2024 10:53

I usually go away for a night or two on NYD. I am on my way to London as I type, and am going to Brussels on the Eurostar for a few days.
This starts my New Year off week.

It's exactly what you make it. If you make it a bad day it will be a bad day. Personally I'm sitting in my pjs chilling out before doing a few jobs then going for a nice walk later. Just do what makes you happy

mondaytosunday · 01/01/2024 11:16

Why? It's a fine day to plan for the year ahead! Of course if you are nursing the mother of all hangovers...

kitsuneghost · 01/01/2024 11:26

Since when did people hate a bank holiday with a lie in then some steak pie still in your jammies. NYD is great.

RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 11:33

I like it. It just feels like a Sunday, then the world gets back to normal.
It's currently very sunny where I am, and we are just about to go for a walk along the beach (NE coast).

zingally · 01/01/2024 13:03

I spent most of the morning setting up my new internet router. Everything, apart from the printer was a breeze. 2 hours later and the printer still isn't working.
I've had to step away, make a coffee, and I'll try again another day. Next job is taking the deccos down.

Agreed.

I think some people just look for any excuse to whinge and be miserable and pissed off, rather than looking for the positives.

I really don't understand how a Bank Holiday, especially one with no particular expectations attached, can possible be the "worst day of the year"

RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 13:22

I agree @5foot5
I have never felt any expectations about new years day.

Today's beach walk.

New Years Day
ilovesooty · 01/01/2024 13:28

I've been to the gym this morning and the sun is shining. Good day!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/01/2024 13:28

I love it.A fresh start ahead.

We woke up in a b&b at the coast.
Just had one night there went out for drinks and a curry in the evening.
Now we're back home with Only Fools and Horses on the telly and we're having beef roast dinner with all the trimmings later.

Inextremis · 01/01/2024 13:39

I didn't drink last night so woke up (late!) feeling just fine this morning. I've just had rashers, black and white pudding for breakfast - about to take the dog out and then have a look through my seed packets to start planning the veggie garden for this year. Roast beef dinner later - all is good - and @RampantIvy - that's St Mary's lighthouse, isn't it? Great to see the place I used to walk my dog back in the 60s, as a child! Thanks for that, brings back some happy memories :)

5foot5 · 01/01/2024 13:47

Lovely photo @RampantIvy that looks like a brilliant walk.

ForeverWinter · 01/01/2024 14:21

I just wish the gym was open, i'm itching to get back in. We've been for a walk instead and will take the christmas decs down today

bastin · 01/01/2024 14:26

ilovesooty · 01/01/2024 01:11

I love NYD. All the festive crap is over, life is getting back to normal, yet I don't have to go to work.

Yes!

Just took the decorations down and the tree has been put outside

Andylion · 01/01/2024 15:05

Surely it’s just a bonus day off with no real expectations attached?

I agree. For me it’s the best lazy Sunday of the year, because I also have the next day off.
I’ve been off since the 20th, and, aside from some Christmas activities with my family and friends, have done nothing with my spare time, even though there are many things I need to do around the house.

I have been a couch sloth and my sleep has suffered. This morning I woke up energized and came up with a solution to a problem I have been facing.

chocolatemademefat · 01/01/2024 15:19

I’m Scottish and no way is New Years Day more important than Christmas. Maybe for my parents generation - I’m not young and I haven’t celebrated it for years. I don’t know anyone else who thinks it’s a big deal.

Aquarius1234 · 01/01/2024 18:31

It signals end of Christmas and most of the time back to work the next day!
I prefer the lead up to Xmas.

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 18:34

DD is an adult, so we don't really have a "lead up" to Christmas any more. A couple of meals out with hobby groups, a deliveroo Christmas meal one lunchtime at work and that's it.
