To ask them to be quiet even though it's NYE

Next door are making so much noise that I can hear them through 3 rooms. Live in a flat. I know it's new years but AIBU to knock on and ask them to be quiet please? With all the fireworks making so much noise too, I just want to go to sleep.

Been in Scotland 20 years, and let’s face it, it’s just the same as English NYe except for the name.

Um no. Also been in Scotland over 20 years, can assure you it's much bigger and more cherished than it ever was down south. But it may depend on who you live with. I'm married into a very traditional Scottish family and absolutely love the traditions, history and love for Hogmanay. Definitely not just the same with a different name, that comes across a little ignorant though I realise that might not have been your intention. I also don't mean any of my post to sound antagonistic either so sorry if it does, a few drinks in so hard to get tone right. Anyway here's to yer health and lang may yer lum reek, wishing you a very happy 2024 🥃

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 01/01/2024 02:05

Bloody hell

It's NYE

People will be up until later than normal. Which means that the "normal" hours are all pushed back

2am would be what I'd consider midnight normally

Lighten up, find ways for YOU to deal with it, don't expect them to revolve around you

New Year (also known as Hogmanay) is a Very Big Deal in Scotland.

It's really not any more so than in England nowadays

fliptopbin · 01/01/2024 02:43

I write a letter to the council every new year demanding that Xmas lights are gone my 26th dec land threatening legal action if there is noise after 8 when my babies got to bed. I think the letters have been threatening enough that all lights were down, and all curtains closed by 8 each year.
I cannot be doing with starting the year with my twins out of sleep routine.

StinkyWizzleteets · 01/01/2024 02:51

You grab a bottle or a packet of biscuits and you go join them OP.

I have never in my life heard of someone giving neighbours a 45 min deadline to be quiet before demanding silence on Hogmanay. That’s proper glue sniffing talk 😂😂😂

So just like in England and Wales then, where some people make a big deal out of the event and others don't.

Fireworks went on for less than five minutes here in Scotland. I looked out my window to see them and every house on my road, bar one, was in darkness.

NewtonPulsifer · 01/01/2024 03:50

Neeeee naaaawww neeeeee naaaawww it is the fun police. YABU.

Teder · 01/01/2024 04:00

You’d get on well with the poster from a few days ago who was angry with her coughing neighbour. 😂 Happy New Year!

Rowgtfc72 · 01/01/2024 04:26

I went to bed at 9, have to be up at 4am for work. Expected the inevitable fireworks and shouting at midnight. Its NYE, not their fault work only give us Christmas day off.

Are you in Scotland because honestly I still don't think that's the case. I've been her 22 years and hogmanay is very different to normal Nye.

Then of course new year's day, first footing (which we used to do en route home from nights out, landing at a pals at 4am with shortbread, a bottle and some black bun but now we're older is a morning affair) and steak pie for dinner.

It's in darkness because everyone's out.

Lived here all my life. It used to be massive. Party before the bells etc. I know very few folk who go out on Hogmanay now & those that do tend to do it because it's Hogmanay & were Scottish its our duty

I dont know the last time I heard of anyone first footing round the neighbours with a bottle. Hasn't been done here in a good 20/25 years

It's not an age thing because I know from talking at work etc everyone is the same

The only real tradition absolutely everyone seems to carry on is the steak pie dinner.

Maybe you're just older now? I know in our 40s we tend more to stay in but even the year before our eldest was born, so 6 years ago we went out to a local Nye party, then first footed a pal on the way home, other arrived and we stayed up to 5am before skulking off home for a sleep and a trip to mils the next evening for hungover steak pie. Bit quieter post COVID like anything but still definitely a whole festive thing.

JanglingJack · 01/01/2024 05:38

Top tip - mark it on your calendar for next year so that it doesn't take you by surprise again (?)

Set a reminder to buy some ear plugs and an eye mask in advance.

I’m sure there are people in England who go on to their mates for drinks after a party as well.

Why so invested in insisting hogmanay is nothing special?

newoldfluff · 01/01/2024 06:03

No, as I said in pp it's not an age thing. Younger colleagues & friends are the same. The majority are home for the bells

Its a shame it used to be a great time, my Dad just loved New Year the festivities lasted for days in our street.

The only activity here once the fireworks stopped were the workmen digging up the road til 0430 🤦🏻‍♀️

Missingmyusername · 01/01/2024 06:06

PrimalOwl10 · 01/01/2024 00:16

What do you expect op it's nye. Its one night once a year.

But it’s not is it. It’s several times a year and then people spout COL.

Thankfully none here, OP you have my every sympathy! Fireworks should be banned.

Where are you? I'm in Glasgow and it's Def a big deal here and the younger nurses etc I work with all had out out plans, a lot of pals with kids were at ceilidhs or kids parties laid on in pubs and hotels.thwn up for the bells themselves.

Redglitter · 01/01/2024 06:08

I'm in Renfrewshire.

The only person I know of going out was my niece - but then any excuse for a party 🥳

Scirocco · 01/01/2024 06:13

@Redglitter it's still definitely a big thing for a lot of people - loads of folk out celebrating this year, either out out or round at house parties (all ages too)

Redglitter · 01/01/2024 06:16

I'm not disputing it is, you only have to look at the events pubs etc are putting on. What im sayung is it's definitely not celebrated the way it was maybe 20÷ years ago.

There's not even fireworks in Glasgow anymore
