To ask them to be quiet even though it's NYE

Next door are making so much noise that I can hear them through 3 rooms. Live in a flat. I know it's new years but AIBU to knock on and ask them to be quiet please? With all the fireworks making so much noise too, I just want to go to sleep.

It's once a year. I'm in bed too and have been since 10. Do what is within your own power to block out any noise (stick white noise on your phone not be on mumsnet) and try to relax.

Gowlett · 01/01/2024 00:26

They’re enjoying a party. You’ll sleep another night…

TinkerTiger · 01/01/2024 00:27

What's Scottish got to do with it?

Confused

Tell me you live in a bubble

Sisterpita · 01/01/2024 00:27

I have to put up with competitive fireworks, and it’s not immediate neighbours. Who has the loudest firework that they can send the last. One year they were still going at 1:15.

Xmasdread22 · 01/01/2024 00:29

@Sisterpita ridiculous isn't it!

What's Scottish got to do with it? My tv got turned down when I saw next doors curtains close. It's not difficult to be respectful.

I'm up with a wine, fireworks didn't start til ten past, I suspect from the rural garden estate. So salmon and trout like big boomers or are they quiet the next few days?

Are you fir real?

WhatsInStoreFor2024 · 01/01/2024 00:31

There's always 1!

OutYerEd · 01/01/2024 00:31

You really can’t go knocking on peoples doors telling them to be quiet at half 12 on NYE. Dont be ridiculous.

Xmasdread22 · 01/01/2024 00:32

Thankfully they've quietened down now

@BananaSplitsss ditto if you're setting off fireworks.

Who said I am setting off fireworks .. The sound from them can come from afar. How’s that fair to your direct neighbours to blare out music for your dog in the early hours. 🙄

Pizzarules · 01/01/2024 00:33

I really don’t think you can ask neighbours to be quiet tonight. Not at any time. Can you put earphones in and go to also sleep with music or an audiobook?

Xmasdread22 · 01/01/2024 00:36

@BananaSplitsss totally agree with your point here. Really not fair on neighbours. I have pets but wouldn't do this!

Must be lush not have to work a 12 hour shift in 4 hours with neighbours blasting music through the walls but it's NY 😒

chaosmaker · 01/01/2024 00:36

It all turned to shit on 1999's NYE when idiots introduced fireworks and they've been going every year since. I think the gales and heavy rain have dampened them here, thankfully. All is quiet.

ManateeFair · 01/01/2024 00:37

I don’t think NYE is the time to pick this battle.

trainboundfornowhere · 01/01/2024 00:39

I live in a cottage flat also known as a four in a block and my downstairs neighbour is having a party. Last time she did this it was still going on at 4am so breathe a sigh of relief your not here.

The neighbours have had the same hours and hours of very loud fireworks that we have and music is to drown them out. Or they'd just hear the barking anyway. Either way, there's noise.

Xmasdread22 · 01/01/2024 00:23

@WithACatLikeTread no? They're being so loud and it's unnecessary.

It’s new years!

Xmasdread22 · 01/01/2024 00:44

@flawlessandfearless oh god barking would do my head in. I feel sorry for your neighbours if their choice is between barking or loud washing machine and loud music.

OP posts:
Applebottomjeans3 · 01/01/2024 00:44

Surely it’s the one night of the year you tolerate people being a bit louder than usual? I think YABVU to ask them to quieten down tonight.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 01/01/2024 00:44

You can't ask them to pipe down on NY, it's unreasonable. I say this as someone with a very low tolerance for other folks noise and their general lack of consideration for people around them.

Xmasdread22 · 01/01/2024 00:45

@Applebottomjeans3 I decided on quarter to one as a deadline and they're quiet now so I won't knock on.

Oh my god, are you always this thick?

None of this would be needed if we hadn't had fireworks all night.

I'd be fine with 20 mins around midnight but not 6 hours. My very old dog is barking because she's distressed. I can't stop her. Training, exposure, drugs, blankets, shirts, soothing wipes, toys, food. Nothing has worked. She's a rescue and very nervous.
