To be scared that I’m still marked by the crows?

ChoccyOrangeYum · 31/12/2023 23:14

A couple of years ago I walked the dog on a local field. I know nothing about birds but I was later told it was their breeding season.

Anyway we must have got too close to their nests as they suddenly started flying around irrationally, making a hell of a racket screaming etc and then started dive bombing the dog. The dog thought this was fun so started chasing the crows. All hell broke loose basically and we were suddenly surrounded by crows going mental. We made a quick exit!!

I left it a few days then took the dog back on the field but after speaking to locals about the crows I stayed away from the back of the field (where they’re breeding) and kept dog in lead. As soon as we stepped on the field the noise started up again and the crows appeared and started dive bombing again! There was someone else on the field with a dog who the crows were totally ignoring!

We left and after a bit of research I found that crows remember faces and don’t forgive easily 😬 so we didn’t go back on.

A whole year later we went back on assuming the old crows won’t be there anymore but we were on there 5 minutes before it all started again. These birds are not bothering anyone else on the field, just me!!

Anyway my neighbour has suggested we go for a walk in the field tomorrow morning but I’m shit scared of the birds. Will they still go for me if I don’t have the dog?! Will they ever move on from the incident 2 years ago or am I banned from the field for life?!

@CormorantStrikesBack - 😱 you’d need a hell of a lot of cheese to negotiate your way out of that scenario!

At what point do I stop checking for an update...... 🤔

I blame Ted Hughes' Crow for my 20 year + fascination with crows. I like to think there's a bit of Crow in all crows. Especially the ones I am now currently courting every evening, at around 6pm, with cat biscuits.

You crow tart! Seducing them with crunchy delights!

I am going to follow your lead - together we can forge a vast army of crows with which to bring British Politics back to common decency and truly protecting the vulnerable, supporting the struggling, properly educating children, providing a decent medical service for the sick, getting the police back to dealing with real crime rather than just handing out incident numbers.

Are you with me? (Tea and biscuits provided for all Crow Whisperers)

The OP right now...

My own 30yr+ love of crows comes from another of Ted Hughes poems. Not sure if it is as GCSE or A-Level when I read this.

Examination at the Womb-Door

Who owns those scrawny little feet? Death.
Who owns this bristly scorched-looking face? Death.
Who owns these still-working lungs? Death.
Who owns this utility coat of muscles? Death.
Who owns these unspeakable guts? Death.
Who owns these questionable brains? Death.
All this messy blood? Death.
These minimum-efficiency eyes? Death.
This wicked little tongue? Death.
This occasional wakefulness? Death.

Given, stolen, or held pending trial?
Held.

Who owns the whole rainy, stony earth? Death.
Who owns all of space? Death.

Who is stronger than hope? Death.
Who is stronger than the will? Death.
Stronger than love? Death.
Stronger than life? Death.

But who is stronger than Death?
Me, evidently.
Pass, Crow.

I "did" Crow for A-level. Still have my copious notes somewhere.

Just seen this horror crow tiktok! https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGe2uWPYL/. How many?

Blimey! 😧

If it was seagulls I would have speculated that someone had dropped a chip . . . but this is eerie.

I'm not on TikTok so can't see the video, but I imagine it's like where I live? I live in the sticks, and about 100 yards from my house is a big rookery. At dawn the rooks all take off together to go foraging in the fields, thousands of them wheeling in the sky, the noise is incredible. At twilight they begin to gather on the telephone wires, just like in the Birds, thousands of them flying to join each other, and they circle round and round, over our house, telling each other about their day, for about twenty minutes, before dropping down into their roost in a little copse. The chattering goes on for ages. It's quite a spectacle, and I'm rather fond of them.

I thought I couldn't watch it either @FizzingAda , but when I did a bit of experimental clicking, it let me watch as a guest.

I love crows, they are so intelligent and yes they remember faces and dogs. One of my dogs is forever chasing 'the 3 stooges' out of our garden, we feed the crows. These 3 will torment this one particular dog by hopping on the fence and squaking at her, they ignore the other dog. They also fly close to her in the field, and drive her nuts, we know it's the same 3 as 2 of them have a mallen streak! Also they thank us for their food by bringing small bones and putting them in the bird bath, this apparently is a common practice.

RIP op. At least you were murdered by crows and not smothered by tits. Chortle.

I should be fast asleep by now but have been fully invested to find that OP has been missing for 4 days 😮 I can only imagine that OP is in deep trauma. I need to know what happened

evtheria · 06/01/2024 00:00

Really grumpy I don't know what's happened with OP v The Crows, but can't explain to anyone irl that it's because of a MN thread...

Namechange4448830938489 · 06/01/2024 00:03

Come on - what happened??

Pokethedot · 06/01/2024 06:58

@ChoccyOrangeYum please come back, why didn’t you tell DH to get on mumsnet if the crows got you 😭

Branster · 06/01/2024 08:27

This Monday coming at 9:25AM we should all take a moment to remember OP at the 1 week anniversary since her last post.
All hope has already been lost of ever finding out the truth but it can't be a good ending.
I hope at least the dog survived.
Maybe one day the crows will work out how to use OP's phone and we might get a message from them.

This is the best thread on MN, I never laughed, snorted and giggled so much. Most sad circumstances, but still hilarious!

Namechange4448830938489 · 06/01/2024 11:39

Maybe we will see something in the newspapers? 😂
