What are you doing tonight if it's just you and your partner?

I've been married for 18 years. My DH and I have decided to spend new year at home just the two of us as we will be working tomorrow (self employed!)

We don't seem to have fun together anymore. We just go through the motions.

We don't laugh as much. :(

I'd love some inspiration and to hear about how you are spending this evening if it's just you and your partner.

OP posts:

DH is currently cooking for us then TV and fizz-we have kids but they're busy on consoles... I've decided next year I'd quite like to see in the NY at a lodge with a hot tub so that's what I'm trawling the internet for while he cooks.

Witchbitch20 · 31/12/2023 20:36

He’s in his study drinking.
I’m pretending to watch an Agatha Christie - whilst really clock watching so I can go to bed.

AllAroundMyCat · 31/12/2023 20:36

Just off to bed but pissed off with all the fireworks already... three and a half hours to go!

HighlandCowRose · 31/12/2023 20:37

Sitting not talking to each other, I was just chatting about 'us' he can't handle any sort of an emotional conversation, so has shut down and us ignoring me
So fed up of this bullshit to be honest 😒
Wish we were dancing in the kitchen

idril · 31/12/2023 20:39

We do singstar (basically kareoke with a competition element). Neither of us can sing but there is nothing like a good old sing to lift spirits. (Nb we live in a semi with non adjoining living room so we won't be traumatising our neighbours 😂)

heidihigh · 31/12/2023 20:40

We have ordered a curry so just waiting for that to arrive. Probably watch something rubbish on the telly. Won't lie, I'll probably be asleep on the sofa way before 12 Xmas Grin happy new year all!

FrogSplash · 31/12/2023 20:41

Eating fancy cheese, gaming and watching the new Mission Impossible film.

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/12/2023 20:41

I cooked Chicken Massaman curry from scratch - we had dim sum and then the curry. Opened a bottle of nice wine left over from Christmas.

He did a 20 mile run earlier today and has a couple of pints afterwards, so has now fallen asleep on the sofa. He has work in the morning so won't wake him. I am instead going to take advantage of that by finishing the wine and having a bit of a Being Human binge.

LaSpuddle · 31/12/2023 20:43

He’s ill in bed, I’m on the sofa. Was looking forward to reading my book uninterrupted but now I can’t concentrate on it

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 31/12/2023 20:49

DC asleep. We're watching ghostbusters then probably early night. Covid has got us!

However, this is still us most years, although occasionally we make the effort to have a takeaway and watch a film. It's just another night, everywhere is busy and expensive. We save our fun money (and energy) for other things.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 31/12/2023 20:22

About to watch ‘The Shop Around the Corner’

Great choice!

tobee · 31/12/2023 20:55

MeinKraft · 31/12/2023 20:30

Arguing about what to watch on TV probably. If I have to watch Jools Holland this year again I'll be seeking my free 30 minutes with a solicitor Grin

Dh bought us tickets to see Jools a few weeks ago live. I've seen him twice and it's always the same. So he went on his own. I felt a bit bad. But Dh didn't ask; and he was fine about me not going too.

mrsbyers · 31/12/2023 20:56

Both got some sort of virus so sat drinking milk to get some calories into us as easily as possible and watching a nature documentary , can’t wait til bed time again and just got up

AliasGrape · 31/12/2023 20:58

Well it’s just us by default - we’ve been at panto today with DD and in-laws. Have a relative staying but they’ve gone to bed as not well (and didn’t make the panto). We did a little ‘party’ of snacks and played some (3 year old appropriate) board games with DD before doing a fake countdown and putting her to bed at 8.

So now it is just us, I’ve made us both a cocktail and DH is doing a baked Camembert (which we had in for Christmas Eve but forgot all about) and pulling together some other nibbles for us and we might watch a film. If we didn’t have to worry about waking toddlers/ sick relatives we’d probably have a ‘you tube party’ where we take it in turns to put different songs on and sing along badly, but tonight will be quieter.

BrendaMcPherson · 31/12/2023 20:58

In pyjamas, watching Vera and eating a Chinese takeaway.

Pigeonqueen · 31/12/2023 20:59

He’s playing on the Xbox (sat next to me) and I’m on here and then he’ll watch Reacher which I can’t get into so I’ll probably go to bed early! So rock n roll 🤣 been married 15 years. We never really do new years. I can’t be arsed staying up that late.

Longwhiskers · 31/12/2023 20:59

Got a Charlie Bingham ready meal, a trifle and a good bottle of red and have just put on Leave the World Behind. We’ll be in bed by 11pm! Perfect evening to me anyways we were away over Xmas so really good to relax.

inquisitiveinga · 31/12/2023 21:00

My wonderful DS is with his Daddy this year, no doubt having an awesome time! As a result my partner, myself, big baby bump and cat can take it easy and are snuggled up in bed watching "3 men and a baby" laughing about times soon to come.

AlltheFs · 31/12/2023 21:00

We hate New Year here, we had a series of very shitty things happen in the past (suicide etc) and so we always pretty much ignore it. Neither of us like going out either.

DH working tomorrow, so we will be in bed by 10.30. We had a lovely lunch earlier and a bit of fizz.

We have the day off on 2nd though as nursery shut so having a day out with DD. That I am looking forward to though.

BarrelOfOtters · 31/12/2023 21:03

We were out till 2a, last night…rare for us…so are a bit hungover and will be in bed by 10. It’s the first new year ever I can remember (I’m 56) where haven’t been out or had friends over….

we also caught up with new Fargo. John hamm is excellent.

Racingadmin · 31/12/2023 21:05

Have just made the most of dcs being out at parties with some quality time Grin and now both in bed with a cuppa watching standup comedy

WumbenWimpundWoomud · 31/12/2023 21:06

I hear you OP. This year my OH is on shift so just me. The kids are in bed and I need to do some work. I’m procrastinating and posting here instead of getting on with it. I think this is my least fun year yet

Mydogisagentleman · 31/12/2023 21:07

Just got home after starting work at 07.00, quick chat with DH and whirled my dog around the block.
Off to bed to start again st 07.00. So up at 5am.
Happy New year

43ontherocksporfavor · 31/12/2023 21:08

@ErrolTheRednosedDragon that made me laugh!
We spent the day in London, walked miles enjoying all the sights having not been for a while. Home and made a chilli and Prosecco plus some leftover cheese. On sofa with dog doubting I will stay awake u ntil 12.

DinkyDinos · 31/12/2023 21:10

1 year old and 4 year old have just settled so we're going have a glass of Prosecco and start a puzzle. Might have a little kitchen dance at midnight.
Unbelievably we actually had 2 babysitter offers this evening but decided we couldn't face cramming into a pub whilst everyone tries to have 'the best night ever!'
