More a wwyd? XL bully

alrightluv · 31/12/2023 07:42

There's an awful couple moved in our street. It's terraced. Always fighting and letting their huge XL bully run in the street. The dog hasn't shown aggression so far.

My problem is they have little control over it. There's children in the street and walking to and from school.

Yet again early hours they're arguing plus others in the house are. The dog is in the street.

I'm tempted to report them but an innocent dog could be taken away. I just don't want to regret it if it does turn. It's so big an adult wouldn't stand a chance.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

I like dogs as well but we have to put humans first. Call the police.

DustyLee123 · 31/12/2023 07:44

I would report any dog that’s being allowed to run free in the street, the breed is irrelevant

PurpleFlower1983 · 31/12/2023 07:44

After today it may be taken away anyway. They don’t sound like the sort who will have neutered and chipped!

Kimmeridge · 31/12/2023 07:46

If youre in England these dogs are banned after today so your problem might be solved. If its still around after that then you should definitely report it

alrightluv · 31/12/2023 07:48

Thanks, I know you're all right. Even DH who isn't a dog lover was unsure and said ask Mumsnet 😄

They sound like the kind of owner who have led to this whole mess so yes report them.

alrightluv · 31/12/2023 07:52

Next door has one and it's lovely. He doesn't let it roam but I've met it when out. I hope he follows the rules as it'd be awful if that got PTS.

That dog is a ticking time bomb due to their irresponsible ownership, 100% report or you'll regret not doing so.

MondayBags678 · 31/12/2023 07:56

I like dogs but I’d be uncomfortable with that! Sad but the safety of everyone including the dog
what if it were to cause a road traffic accident? There’s other dangers of dogs running loose I’d say the same for any breed whether it’s a small terrier or an xl bully
the threat of danger is there if the dog is not being looked after and controlled properly

AhBiscuits · 31/12/2023 07:58

If it's loose call the dog warden. It's a crime now. Hopefully it will be taken and PTS.

MaryHinges · 31/12/2023 08:00

From today the dog will need to be kept on lead and muzzled. It's possible they will be given a chance to comply with the new laws but unfortunately with people like this it is unlikely they will give a toss. I've had large breeds all my life and if the breed I keep was subject to amendment under the dangerous dogs act, I wouldn't hesitate to comply because I love my dogs and will do anything I have to do to keep them safe and alive and to reassure the public. Not everyone is like me.

TempestTost · 31/12/2023 08:01

Loose dogs are a danger to themselves as well as others.

If they were otherwise responsible, I might look for a different solution, I've had an escape artist dog before. But if they are generally not responsible I'd call.

Gizlotsmum · 31/12/2023 08:03

Report next time it is loose or out in public without a muzzle/leash. From today XL bully breeds need to obey new rules. It will be put to sleep as they cannot now be rehomed but that is on them not you.

MaryHinges · 31/12/2023 08:04

Why? OP said it has never been aggressive. All the law says is that it needs to be kept muzzled and on lead in public. The new laws will be explained and they will be given an opportunity to comply. Thankfully they aren't being put to sleep all willy nilly as much as you'd like to see that xx

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 31/12/2023 08:05

If they are responsible (which it doesn't sound like) then they should have already been going through the exemption process, depending on whether it even fits the measurements.

Maybe, from today you won't see the dog outside without a muzzle or lead.

But, no dog should be running around the roads. It could cause a car accident and get killed.

alrightluv · 31/12/2023 08:09

No they aren't responsible. I've been unable to sleep last night worrying about the baby and little girl next door and when gss visit. Baby is out most days in a buggy being pushed up the street.

It won't be put to sleep just like that. Read the legislation rather than posting misinformation. The law will be explained to them and they will be told they need to comply. You can re-home them. As long as the new owner complies with he change in legislation, no law has been broken.

MintJulia · 31/12/2023 08:10

@MaryHinges No dog is aggressive until the first time it is aggressive. The trouble with such powerful dogs is that may be the day it kills someone. Pretending otherwise is ignoring the facts.

If a dog is loose, call the owner and ask them to get it under control. If they don't comply immediately, call the dog warden.

Yes, am sure these owners will take notice. More likely to punch me.

Fourth XL bully thread since yesterday.

Any out of control dog has the police called on it. The fact it’s an XL makes it even more important IMO. ‘Nice’ dogs are always nice until they aren’t - isn’t that what every XL owner has said about their dog? Even the one that killed the 83 year old pensioner.

Sigh. And your update (which I have just seen, hence the edit) reinforced the point I made on a different thread yesterday - dogs like this doesn’t stand a chance. The owners are scum. It WILL attack eventually with owners like that.

Apologies my understanding was an XL bully from today had to be registered to one owner and ownership could not be transferred. I am glad I am wrong

Dogs trust website says they can’t be rehomed. I assumed they would know the law

Pigeonqueen · 31/12/2023 08:30

You should report it. I love dogs too but it’s an out of control dog, left out around children unsupervised.

confuseeedd · 31/12/2023 08:32

Report.

Any dog can harm or kill a child when it is running wild with no control from the owner.

Whatever peoples opinion on the breed being banned, irresponsible owners only have themselves to blame when things go wrong with their own dog.

From today it is illegal to re-home an XL bully. Owners must comply with the restrictions or euthenise.
