Well....the AIBU vote currently reflects the brexit vote...

Yep, someone on the right posts a drunken, nonsensical rant and people fall for it despite the misrepresentations and lies.

I suppose it goes to show that MN is not packed to the rafters with lefties.🤷‍♀️

BIossomtoes · 31/12/2023 13:30

Fucking hell, who are you mixing with? I’m a “leftie” pensioner and I haven’t encountered anyone like that in my entire adult life.

Agreed with you so hard! I'm more centre than you but still pretty left leaning and all the fascist, homophobic mnisogynistic hypocrites I've met in my life have been politically well right of centre - as in, so right that even the current Tories wouldn't be right enough for them.

Many of my late husband's family have been staunch Tories all their lives but are appalled at what their party has become - and will be staying home come election day. The word 'Conservative' as in 'Party' really doesn't mean what it did 20 years ago.

AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin · 31/12/2023 13:38

As I said, XX and XY are not the only possible chromosome combinations, and intersex people exist, so, no, it is not binary, and that it is not is supported by the science.

AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin · 31/12/2023 13:43

Well, quite, though no one has claimed otherwise 🤔

JazbayGrapes · 31/12/2023 13:48

Left wing is a joke. Say you prefer apples. "wHy dO yOu hAtE oRaNgEs?!?!?!"
Say you shouldn't do the Bad Thing, "You are killing us!!!"

AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin · 31/12/2023 13:49

Sex in humans is binary. It is determined by the x and y chromosomes which moderate hormone production and responses to those hormones. The existence of differences in chromosomes (XO, XXY, XYY etc), mutations in hormone receptors and differences in sexual development don't change that.
Intermediate and 3rd sexes don't work in evolutionary terms which is why they don't exist.

The question was, how do you determine biological sex? Clearly you can't use chromosome combinations alone or reproductive organs alone, which shows it is not a purely binary thing.

Islandermummy · 31/12/2023 13:51

What I would agree with is that (most) left wing people tend to view those to the right of them as bad people.* Whereas (most) right wing people tend to have a bit of an "aw bless" attitude towards lefties without it being vitriolic. So it's easy to accuse lefties of hypocrisy as they tend to be more sanctimonious than their right of centre equivalents.

But a nasty trend at the moment is that the right is becoming more like the left (I'm thinking Suella etc) in slagging off those with different political views, and portraying them as harmful (ie "anti growth coalition")

This chain also shows the horrible fact that these days people find it hard to disagree agreeably and without resorting to ad hominem attacks.

I'm left of centre for the record but deffo centrist enough to provoke OP's ire! (Am veggie but feed my rescue cats meat, vote Labour but like buying nice things...)

*this has held them back at times as they are often concerned with traitors rather than teaming up to win

Look, can you please take this pointless discussion about sex and gender somewhere else @AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin. There’s a reason MN has created a section for it.

But what has this got to do with taking puberty blockers and chopping off parts of your body?

JazbayGrapes · 31/12/2023 13:53

Are you saying we can't recognize male from female anymore? Yes, there are some anomalies, yes, some people can fool you in disguise. But really...

It's really important and the Labour Party are woeful on women's rights. It affects all women so it belongs here.

Everydayimhuffling · 31/12/2023 13:55

It's almost as if "the left" is actually a massive swathe of the population and therefore quite disparate...

I've not mentioned gender 🤷‍♂️ I've just responded to some of the factually incorrect statements that were made. Biological sex is not immutable in nature and biological sex is not binary, whichever way you determine it.

The whole left-right discourse is really massively outdated. It's so muddled up that you can't really unpick, but very useful when if you want population at each other's throats all the time.

No. I'm saying biological sex is not binary, scientifically speaking, no matter the measure you use to determine it. Other variations exist.

Please. Just stop. It’s an absolute pain when people derail an interesting thread like this. Start your own thread so those of us with no interest can swerve it.

Those variations are anomalies. Birth defects. Not boy brain - girl brain nonsense.

Very easily.
Y chromosome present: male
Y chromosome absent: female

Arguing that sex is not binary because a very small number of mammals are born with genetic abnormalities is like claiming that humans are not bipedal because a very small number are born with a missing leg. And equally idiotic.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/12/2023 14:06

One of the main areas I see cognitive dissonance is in people claiming the Tories protect women's rights.

This is the Tory party whose guidance to prisons in 2014(IIRC) allowed Karen White (and others) into women's prisons where they sexually assaulted and abused women.

They are the party that introduced Self ID to the UK and inflicted the Trans shitshow on us.

They are the party that has practically decriminalised rape in the UK. Hardly surprising given the rapists and sex abusers they promote and cover for in their own party.

If the Tories can't/won't protect the women in the party from the men who rape them, how can anyone think they'll protect ordinary British women?

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/12/2023 14:06

@pointythings

The word Conservative' as in 'Party' really doesn't mean what it did 20 years ago.

This is true. The current iteration of what is called the Conservative Party has changed beyond recognition. Whatever decent values it once espoused have completely disappeared.

I have never voted Tory and probably never will but at one point I had a grudging respect for the One Nation wing of the Party and its consistentcy, commitment and discipline. I still think there are decent individuals in the Party but they are drowned out by the current administration.

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/12/2023 14:11

@TooBigForMyBoots

I totally agree. All the “Kier Starmer doesn’t know what a woman is,” shite is deeply misleading.

Yes Labour’s positions on trans issues have been lamentable and very damaging but do people seriously think the current Tory front bench is more committed to feminism?

Barbadossunset · 31/12/2023 14:13

What exactly would you do differently in my shoes? How can I twist myself to become someone you'd find an acceptable being with your wide-open, accepting, non-leftie views?

Mummyfird why were you a non-dom in the first place?

CurlewKate · 31/12/2023 14:14

@YouJustDoYou "I have experienced by and large that "left wingers" tend to be a bunch of fascist, bigoted, misogynistic, homophobic hypocrites."

Wow. Do you live in the UK?
