Ricky Gervaise Armageddon yay or nay?

I'm stunned and not in a good way. Watched for a bit but found it too offensive. Apparently when he's on stage and making these 'jokes,' he's in character, like an actor playing a role how? He's gervaise doing what he does. Saying what he says… the fact that he regards anyone who disagrees with him as fucking idiots is laughable. His humour isn't nuanced or sophisticated and I'm pretty certain that the live audience who laughed aloud his jokes about disabled children weren't there for the nuances either.

Someone said it's a bit Roy Chubby Brown so I've avoided it. 😬

I don't mind an edgy joke if its actually funny eg "Book of Mormon" but Ricky just genuinely seems to be making ableist/bigoted jokes nowadays because its low hanging fruit and he knows he can whip up a media storm about being cancelled and sell tickets to people who use the word "woke" in a derogatory way. 😆

Gervais’s standup is like if you removed the better jokes from BoM and replaced them with rants about how you can’t say nuffin these days.

SaffronSpice · 31/12/2023 01:15

I find most so-called comedians offensive. I don’t find RG nearly as offensive as some but whilst some of his writing in Office was funny, I didn’t like his character or his character (same one) in subsequent films.

HOWEVER, I know he has been a target of transactivists for not playing along with gender ideology and mocking it. And for that reason, I am very sceptical of anyone who starts threads criticising him or accusing him of prejudice and bigotry.

crumblingschools · 31/12/2023 01:17

What is the point he is trying to make?

capabilityfrowns · 31/12/2023 01:18

Yay - take the absolute piss out of being woke for the sake of being woke . I watched it thinking "at last ! Someone with some common sense in the world!"

steff13 · 31/12/2023 01:19

pandosadick · 31/12/2023 00:16

See that's what I mean. Nobody can explain why he's funny, it's just that you're an idiot if you don't get it. Emperor's new clothes going on here

I don't know that you can explain why someone is funny. You either find them funny or you don't.

My point exactly. He's going for the easy targets and unfortunately he's whipping up his idiot followers. Like I have said he's a fat white man in-an ivory tower telling people how to think

Generally, that nothing should be off-limits in comedy.

But, even if you agree that, it’s been done before and far better.

Rainbowshit · 31/12/2023 01:22

Ricky gervais has always made entertainment that is uncomfortable. The office and afterlife both had some pretty intentionally cringe humour.

This was no different. I enjoyed it on the whole. I agree with a lot of what he was saying.

PlasticHeart · 31/12/2023 01:24

You've asked for peoples opinions on the show and you've blasted every person who has said they've enjoyed it. You obviously have a clear motive🙄also, why the obsession of his skin colour OP?

But why should nothing be off limits in comedy? So is he saying he can be as racist etc as he likes as long as he is in a venue and standing on a stage.

Yeah I think Ricky Gervais is the very first person to talk dismissively about ‘wokeness’. Very, very fresh. I wonder if it’ll catch on? Maybe one day we’ll have several newspapers and tv news channels seemingly dedicated to it, with politicians regularly getting in on the act too.

Southislandsea · 31/12/2023 01:28

He's dreadful.
Just don't get it at all.
I find him strange and unnerving.
Just my gut feeling.

PlasticHeart · 31/12/2023 01:29

pandosadick · 31/12/2023 01:25

Lol

It's comedy, you either like it or you don't. If you don't, don't fucking watch it.

Walkingtheplank · 31/12/2023 01:30

PP: "HOWEVER, I know he has been a target of transactivists for not playing along with gender ideology and mocking it. And for that reason, I am very sceptical of anyone who starts threads criticising him or accusing him of prejudice and bigotry."

I think this is the frankly transparent point of these threads. TRAs posting almost the same thing.

The last thread started like this. That thread made me watch the show and DH and I found it really funny. I posted that some time after the TRAs had gone to the next thread on the next site so the responses that followed sounded like they came from people who'd actually watched the show - and lo, a new thread to slag him off is started.

It's too obvious.
I don't find every comedy funny. There are certain comedians I don't want to watch because I dont find them and their views funny. I've not felt the need to start a thread to tell people about it though.Hmm

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 31/12/2023 01:31

Cannot stand him. He is David Brent, in every character he ‘plays’ which is actually just his snide self. I agree with you, op, vile little man. Anyone who only mocks others has no humour or comedy talent.

Yes that's exactly what he said. He's basically a character when he's on stage. Same name etc tho…

OP posts:
crumblingschools · 31/12/2023 01:34

So why do the audience laugh at the racist etc character? Are we going back to the comedy of the 70s when many people in the audience agreed with what was being said?

You're clearly unable to have a reasonable debate with people who enjoy his comedy. As i said, your motive was clear from the get go, and your retorts are that of a 12 year old ffs, go to bed OP. It's clearly past your bedtime 😘

Southislandsea · 31/12/2023 01:47

If he spouted his "jokes" in the company of my disabled child - wow!
He would see my child cry and meltdown.
And sorry, but every time I see him, I think of a vampire.
He needs some serious dental work.
He can afford it, most of us can't.
He gives me the creeps.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 31/12/2023 01:53

I am usually a fan but found this a bit....boring tbh.

I laughed at some and rolled my eyes at some

fridaynight1 · 31/12/2023 01:54

I'm not a fan but it's a yay from me.

He sometimes makes me laugh but mostly not. Finding someone funny is subjective and I'd never tell someone else what is and what isn't funny. It's up to them.

He reminds me of my DH. A bit annoying, a bit rude, very dry sense of humour, very clever but never ever boring.

Why should he get his teeth done? 😂 This is the type of things he takes the piss out of.
