Ricky Gervaise Armageddon yay or nay?

I'm stunned and not in a good way. Watched for a bit but found it too offensive. Apparently when he's on stage and making these 'jokes,' he's in character, like an actor playing a role how? He's gervaise doing what he does. Saying what he says… the fact that he regards anyone who disagrees with him as fucking idiots is laughable. His humour isn't nuanced or sophisticated and I'm pretty certain that the live audience who laughed aloud his jokes about disabled children weren't there for the nuances either.

Nay. I get the point he's making, but there are funnier ways to make it without being at the expense of vulnerable people.

myairpods · 31/12/2023 00:38

DH was watching this through his laptop and I told him to shut it in the end as there was too many swear words which sounded like i was sitting behind a drunken lads table in spoons. I wasn't properly watching it though as i was on my phone so cannot comment about the content.

LondonPainter · 31/12/2023 00:38

Nay. I loved his last standup show but just didn't find this one funny.

TheaBrandt · 31/12/2023 00:39

Nay. Really like his manner and much of his earlier stuff but this just didn’t work. It was like he was trying to just say the worst things possible for shock value and those things just weren’t particularly funny. Not clever or observational at all like much of his earlier work and the office /awards ceremonies etc. Didn’t seem like he was at the top of his game at all.

Millicent2023 · 31/12/2023 00:41

Yay

Mrsgreen100 · 31/12/2023 00:42

He’s a creepy twat

Disneydatknee88 · 31/12/2023 00:43

There was a lot of it I didn't find particularly funny but some bits I did. He is absolutely right, you can joke about anything as a comedian but doesn't mean you should. The disabled kid jokes especially made me a bit uncomfortable. Then again, Frankie Boyle has made equally controversial jokes and I still find him funny.

Peasand · 30/12/2023 23:59

I thought it was funny, plus I agreed with a lot of what he was saying, puncturing the sanctimonious guardian reading wokerati.

Please tell me he doesn't use the word "woke" or any variant of it. That's a sure sign of someone unable to think for themselves.

Tothemoonandbackx · 31/12/2023 00:47

I love Ricky Gervais, he didn't exactly just come from an Ivory Tower, he's earnt where he is now through hard work and holds his own opinions, whether you think the are right or wrong, they're his own, that said, I was a little underwhelmed by Armageddon, felt like he was just rehashing his material from his previous stand up. I much preferred Animals, Science and Super Nature.

pandosadick · 31/12/2023 00:47

I have no idea what gervaise's ideology is but I'm pretty sure its financially based Anyway he's pushing the absolute boundaries and encouraging his ideas onto his audience. I'm nearly 100% sure that his audiences aren't laughing ironically at him

Heard bad things so haven't watched it. I do think he's misunderstood though.

Thanks for your input. It's always good to have another opinion

As a teen I'd have found it hilarious.

Then I grew up and learnt how damaging it is to joke like that about any marginalised folks.

Whether he's making a point or not, he's an ableist bigoted cunt.

He's not funny. He's tragic.

If he was in front of me, telling 'jokes' about disabled people, I'd run him over with my wheelchair, pinning him in place, so someone could break his legs.

EachandEveryone · 31/12/2023 00:50

I was there just after chemo and I laughed so hard. As did everyone else. And no, there werent any queues at the bar. There wasn't an empty seat in the house.

I made a thread on this a little whilst ago, OP.

Quit whilst you're ahead is all I'll say 🤣😩

Someone on yesterday’s Armageddon thread recommended Anthony Jeselnik. We watched his special yesterday and it had jokes about child abuse, domestic abuse, death and disability. We got a lot of laughs out of it because the delivery was good and the punchlines were often really unexpected. Shock value alone seldom works for me, and I think Ricky’s latest stuff is actually more tired than shocking anyway.

I also don’t think he’s half as controversial as he thinks he is. Yes, there was a small petition (about 13k people) for Netflix to remove a terminally-ill children joke but you get similarly-sized petitions when an unpopular chocolate bar gets discontinued. Jimmy Carr generated a lot more outrage with his last special and he mostly seems to do light entertainment.

pandosadick · 31/12/2023 01:00

He's a white man who's made his fortune and can now say whatever he damn well pleases and he does. he dresses it up as comedy and if you don't understand or disagree with it then you're an idiot

I liked his previous stuff but wasn't keen on this.

Exactly my point is would that wanker actually have the balls to spew his shit jokes about disabled people to actual real life people

NewYearNewMeBullshit · 31/12/2023 01:07

He's kind to animals that's good enough for me

Lacyy · 31/12/2023 01:09

I'd say it wasn't his best, laboured some points a bit too long but enjoyed the majority of it

PrinnyPree · 31/12/2023 01:11

Someone said it's a bit Roy Chubby Brown so I've avoided it. 😬

I don't mind an edgy joke if its actually funny eg "Book of Mormon" but Ricky just genuinely seems to be making ableist/bigoted jokes nowadays because its low hanging fruit and he knows he can whip up a media storm about being cancelled and sell tickets to people who use the word "woke" in a derogatory way. 😆
