BIL gave dog same same as DS

Not sure if AIBU or precious so am prepared to be told I am!

BIL (DH brother) recently got a dog and has given it the same name as our DS. Aibu to be irked by this? Name is common boys name (think Jack) and not a name you'd associate with a pet. Surely out of the millions of names out there you would choose one that isn't the same as your nephews?

I can't imagine naming a pet the same name as a close child relative?

When ds is old enough I bet he is buzzing!!

Aquamarine1029 · 29/12/2023 14:27

I couldn't even begin to get worked up about this.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 29/12/2023 14:28

Just admit I would look at him like he was absolutely fucking mad.

What an idiot!

Lemsipper · 29/12/2023 14:28

Obviously your life revolves around your children, but his does not. He may very well have his own reasons for liking that name and didn’t make the connection right away.

I wouldn’t assume it was done maliciously, so unless there is more to this story, just let it go or perhaps light heartedly make a joke about it to him. Life will be more enjoyable for you if you don’t get worked up over such things.

bippitybippity · 29/12/2023 14:30

Ok so I'm being a bit precious arent I? I will let it go and move on with my life!

Maybe you could visit a lot and keep calling your son by name? Or does suggesting that make me a bad person? 😈

SchoolQuestionnaire · 29/12/2023 14:32

My kids named our dogs after their best friends. One shares a name with a distant relative. My dm told me off.

MBappse · 29/12/2023 14:33

I think that is very very ODD indeed.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 29/12/2023 14:33

It wouldn't bother me. I would think he was a bit weird though

NoItsStillNighttimeDarling · 29/12/2023 14:35

I would find this so strange! I don't think you're being precious at all - although I guess nothing you can do about it now!

Doggymummar · 29/12/2023 14:35

My neighbour has cats called mark and Lola and a dog called Toby my dog is Millie. My sister's is Evie. My cat is Oscar. Lots of pets have people names. My name is often used for a dogs name too

MrsKwazi · 29/12/2023 14:37

As per previous poster, it is very odd, but he is the one that looks like a twat, not you. Did he expect an argument/attention do you think?

GalileoHumpkins · 29/12/2023 14:37

Think Jack

Is it Jack?
Honestly, I think it's weird that he's chosen the same name, do you see him much?

Yes I realise this it's more the fact it was chosen despite already being in use by his nephew.

MN is weird about names irl most people would find this very odd!

Fannyannie · 29/12/2023 14:40

I see your point - it’s a bit of a weird thing to do -

My husband & I have had the honour of our names being used on the next door neighbours Guinea pigs- by their kids. A long time ago. I still laugh about it now, your post reminded me.

FastingBitchFace · 29/12/2023 14:42

My parents did this, but they used MY name for their dog.

Fannyannie · 29/12/2023 14:43

That is truly weird

NewNameNigel · 29/12/2023 14:44

For some reason people tend to go out of their way to make out the op is someone how odd to be bothered on name threads but in the real world of course this is a really odd thing to do!

Are you still in speaking terms?

Well, I used the same name for my DD that my parents had used for one of their dogs.
Dog now long dead, DD suits her name.
All well

Yep!

Createausername1970 · 29/12/2023 14:47

I would find it odd. My dog has the same name as a friend's daughter. In my defence the dog was a rescue and already called that name, but I wouldn't have deliberately named her the same as a friend's daughter, so definitely would not have chosen the same name as a close relative.
