BIL gave dog same same as DS

Not sure if AIBU or precious so am prepared to be told I am!

BIL (DH brother) recently got a dog and has given it the same name as our DS. Aibu to be irked by this? Name is common boys name (think Jack) and not a name you'd associate with a pet. Surely out of the millions of names out there you would choose one that isn't the same as your nephews?

I can't imagine naming a pet the same name as a close child relative?

I might have agreed with you - until, a few years ago, we adopted a rescue dog who already had the same name as my youngest niece (who was then 9) - so we changed it.

My mum, for a reason known only to her, told my niece we'd done this - and my niece was very upset!

bippitybippity · 29/12/2023 16:16

Yes i do know it's not worth getting wound up about. It's been interesting to see that I am not completely unreasonable in it rubbing me up the wrong way a bit, though.

The name isn't Jack but I used that as an example of a common boys name to highlight that there were many other popular boys name he could have chosen ( if that was the type of name he wanted, Tom, Charlie, Billy etc as opposed to Rover, Shadow, Fluffy) I realise many dogs have human names but the point was more, if you were going to choose a boys name there are tons to choose from... without choosing DNs.

Anyway, will put it down to lack of imagination on his part and let it go now. Thanks all for your responses!

Jack was literally the first name I thought of when I read your title.

Jack is a good dog's name! Or at least our dog thinks so.

Twiglets1 · 29/12/2023 16:17

Oops just realised the name isn't actually Jack. But it should be.

lljkk · 29/12/2023 16:17

I'd congratulate him on his fine taste & think nothing more of it. Great opportunity for lots of creative description of Jacko the Dog & Jackie the boy, I suppose.

My threshold to take umbrage is just too much higher.

MaryHinges · 29/12/2023 16:18

I currently have a large breed named Blake. Not weird to me as I always wanted a dog called Blake for some reason. I dated someone who only ever gave dogs human names. He had a retriever called Craig, then another called Chad. I thought it was different but not odd.

dawngreen · 29/12/2023 16:21

Maybe he just loved the name, and went with it.

LauderSyme · 29/12/2023 16:22

It's not precious of OP at all to be bothered by this.

Most of us know that our first name is not unique and that we will always share it with many other humans and non-humans. But it's still nice not to have to share it with anyone too close to us, isn't it?

Or maybe are there 2 kinds of people; the kind who care to share and the kind who don't care to share.

It is somehow like BIL is saying DN is not unique enough, though I bet in actuality, the thought 'process' has been along the lines of what @Allthegoodnamesarechosen said.

BIL may well be surprised to have caused grief over this. He was simply thinking it's a cool name and obviously his DB and DSIL like it! If I was you though OP, I would have to mention it - in a neutral tone - at some point!

RiverCartwright · 29/12/2023 16:25

My best ever boy was a Jack. He was a lovely dog. His best mate was Bob, Sunday name Robert dog. As a kid I had a Samuel. Now have a Neville. I like human named animals.

Offwiththecircus · 29/12/2023 16:25

I suggest you resolve this sensibly by throwing a stick and whichever retrieves it first can claim the name.

Neolara · 29/12/2023 16:26

It could be worse. I was given the name of my grandparents' pet poodle.

Actually laughed out loud when I read this!

I couldn't even begin to get worked up about this.

Seriously??

You spend hours/ days/ weeks thinking of a name for your son and are happy with your choice. Everyone knows your son has that name, and you can't get worked up about the child's uncle using it for his DOG??

Sure 🙄

Me too 😂

GrandHighPoohbah · 29/12/2023 16:28

I am mildly annoyed that a friend has called her dog the same name as my DS, so imagine it being someone much closer would be really irritating.

x88mph · 29/12/2023 16:29

BIL named his cats after both of my DC. His DC wanted the boy cat to have DS’s name. Once that was decided, it somehow made sense to them to name the girl cat after my DD. I thought it was quirky and wasn’t bothered at all. My DC loved the idea and were always excited to hear about what their namesakes had been up to.

Easylivin · 29/12/2023 16:33

My parents' dog has the same name as their DIL. My son has the same name as my aunt. Not an issue in our family.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/12/2023 16:34

I have just realised that my dog has the same name as my cousin's DS. Has never occurred to me before ! I hope my cousin wasn't insulted ! But it's a very popular boys name .

Brandyginger · 29/12/2023 16:35

My sister’s SIL did this to her: named dog with very close rhyming name to her son’s name. My sister was pretty pissed off but never said anything. Think son called Sam, dog called Ram but even worse as son’s name is quite unusual and the rhyming dog name even more so! It looked like a complete piss take.

Bellabatwings · 29/12/2023 16:37

We have had four male dogs and everyone of them had boys names… because they are boys.

The current boy is named after my dad and he was well chuffed! Bet your son will be too

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/12/2023 16:38

@TheSunIsOutAndTheSkyIsBlue

I also wouldn't feel the slightest bit upset if someone gave their dog the same name as my DS. Given it's a name that was shared by another 3 children in his class we don't exactly own the name .

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 29/12/2023 16:41

Arrestedforit · 29/12/2023 14:46

Well, I used the same name for my DD that my parents had used for one of their dogs.
Dog now long dead, DD suits her name.
All well

Same scenario with us. It was the name I'd always wanted if I had a girl. But when we called out the short version, the dog would always answer so DD ended up with a nn that we hadn't planned on. So the dog was, say, Bella, and DD became Belle, and still is, 25 years later, despite that not being the name I'd always wanted! But it's fine.

CombatLingerie · 29/12/2023 16:43

YANBU or precious OP your BIL is an idiot. My DH was named by his parents after an Uncle’s dog. They were bonkers! At least it was actually a boy’s name though and not Rover or such like 😂Small mercies!

Spirallingdownwards · 29/12/2023 16:43

My friend's adopted a baby called Ben. Their dog was called Ben so they changed the baby's name to ...

Gary 🤪

Topseyt123 · 29/12/2023 16:46

I gave my labrador the same name as my then still pre-schoooler nephew. They became known as "four legged NAME" and "two-legged NAME" pretty quickly. Neither my sister nor I gave a shit about it.

I wouldn't get worked up over it. It's a non-issue, or should be.
