BIL gave dog same same as DS

Not sure if AIBU or precious so am prepared to be told I am!

BIL (DH brother) recently got a dog and has given it the same name as our DS. Aibu to be irked by this? Name is common boys name (think Jack) and not a name you'd associate with a pet. Surely out of the millions of names out there you would choose one that isn't the same as your nephews?

I can't imagine naming a pet the same name as a close child relative?

I would be tempted to adopt a donkey (or similar) for him for his next birthday. With a bit of luck I am sure you could find one with his name. Sam, Jimmy, Hector, Walter, Ashley, Jasper, Percy & Theo are all currently available.

It's weird. It isn't about 'owning' a name or using a typically human name. It's about it being odd to give your dog the same name as your nephew.

I knew someone who changed their dog's name after they had a child because they wanted to use the same name. At least they didn't name them the same thing, but there are so many names in the world, to not be able to agree on another name for their son...

Well you know what to do when you next get a goldfish.

My niece doesn't seem to mind our dog being named after her , and I'm sure DH gran would be tickled pink her " furry grandchild " was named after her if she was still with us .

My SIL named her daughter the same as my mother's dog. The kid was born after the dog. These days the daughter is now a son and has a totally different name.
My grandparents had a friend who named his dog after my grandad. They inherited him when he died. When my gran called my grandad they both used to turn up.

I would be thrilled if BiL used my dog’s name for his child.

That’s v odd knowing it’s your DS’s name.
A work colleague’s pet has same name as DS - coincidentally- and it feels weird asking after her pet (who’s been ill), using DS’s name so goodness knows how odd it’ll be using your DS’s name when referring to the dog! You’ll have to say ‘Jack’ the dog!!

My DM did this. I think she was jealous of my son tbh or of me having a child. It was all very weird for a few years. We used to refer to our DS by his name and the dog as name+dog eg Bobby and Bobbydog. DM didn't like it at all but DS came first so it was tough. Then the dog died after about 6 years and the next one has a proper dog name now.

My sister is named after a dog my mother had as a child.
I've reminded her of this regularly for the last 50 years or so.

Of course it's bloody odd!

Sausage1989 · 29/12/2023 17:49

I know that nobody owns a name but cmon it's an odd thing to do!! I think most people would actually be quite shocked by this. And I am honestly really chilled out. But I'd be wtf really?! 😂

One of my school friends had a cat when we were teenagers. Fast forward 20 years and she’s named her daughter the same thing she named her cat. I think that was weird too.
