To think that 'some' of the Welsh players were down right ignorant yesterday!

I went to watch the match at the millenium stadium with my (welsh) dh. It was amazing and I really wanted Wales to win, it was a fantastic day with great atmosphere.

However when we watched the tv coverage I noticed that half of the team didnt even acknowledge Prince William let alone shake his hand (although team captain and all round nice bloke Ryan Jones did twice ).

Now I know the welsh will say prince william shouldnt be there, but thats the way its working and even though I dont like the Royals myself, i think he's the best of a bad bunch. And if I had to be presented something by one of them I certainly wouldnt turn the other cheek because I have some manners.

I felt embarrassed by their ignorance, it was shameful. I get loads of abuse for being english living here and my general opinion of wales isnt great but this just reinforced the fact that some welsh people continue to be ignorant bigots where the english are concerned

What did you want PPrince William attention for, i thikn it's lovely they just blend in.

I havn't been on holiday to Wales since we went there and every shop we went into the moment we walked in the conversation changed from English lang - to Welsh. It made me feel very uncomfortable so have never returned, shame really as it is beautiful but the ignorance spoiled it.

Devon and Somerset have been much warner in there welcome and happy to spend my time and money there,

Eh, they spoke their own language and it's ignorant???????

I'm lost on this thread.

I'm very confused too.
What were they ignorant of?

The thing is though, mosschops, I;ve been given abuse for being Welsh living in England. Most English people are not like that, and I'm careful not to tar them all with the same brush

I think the point was although the welsh don't like/agree with the royals, the fact so many of their rugby team were rude enough to ignore prince william who was presumably doing his "job" there made the poster embarrased to be supporting the welsh at that particular moment in time since it highlighted bad manners.

Or at least thats how I read it.

Sorry dont know where the confusion lies:

'didnt even acknowledge Prince William let alone shake his hand'

they line up and shake hands with a load of blokes (RBS guy, a guy who presented the medals and PW), a lot of the team went along the line and shook all the hands apart from PW and just walked past him which I thought was rude and unecessary

Several points:

Why the inverted commas around 'some'?

Yawn Ivy,this old chestnut.Do you really think a crowd of people you have never met care about you enough to change language when you walk in?
Irrespective of the fact that you flatter yourself, it is an irrefutable fact that people do not code switch amongst those they normally speak one language with

'Prince' (note correct use of inverted commas) is a prick

I doubt half the players even saw him. You flatter him somewhat if you reckon not shaking his hand was a political statement. Undoubtedly they had more important things on their minds like getting the beers in.

I smell sour sour sour grapes.

er fairyfly I hope thats not directed at me, I didnt mention the language.

sorry if my inverted comas caused offence!

And MD lots of people are pricks but thats no reason to act like one in response.

Yes it does sound rude. Didn't watch the match and not aroyalist but if it happened as you describe it was rude. I'm married to a Scot - now that's another story

The English complain about the Scots attitude as well. If you go somewhere where you know you're not welcome (or wanted) what do you expect?

Report
flossish · 16/03/2008 14:04

it is rude. they are representing their country and as any representative in the public eye they should behave politely and appropriately.

Music girl, what on earth does that mean, i we not welcome or wanted or scotland or wales????

Does anyone one but me see the underlying racism in this thread and the strange attitude to the royals.

Has it been written by the Daily Mail?????

( i have always thought their should be a shitty tabloid paper like the sinday sport called the Daily Male)

FranSanDisco , yes I'm for real. I get sick of hearing the English here whinging about being picked on. By the way, the French and Irish don't like you either.

Agree with martianbishop. I've gritted my teeth and pretended to smile while having the piss taken out of me for my nationality (welsh) in England. But I am too polite to be rude back, and it hasn't made me decide that all english people are the same. I am also too polite to behave the same towards anyone else, regarless of their nationality.

Only been to Wales twice, and everyone I met there was from Norfolk!!!!!!!

My friend is Welsh though and loves ribbing me about the rugby

Just out of interest, I've spent quite a few holidays in wesh speaking parts of wales. I'm not Welsh speaking myself, and my DH is an English sounding scot. My two children both have English accents.

I have never come across this suddent switching to Welsh on hearing us speaking English. Not once.

Back in the mists of time I used to go out with a chap who was a welsh language activist. He and all his mates spoke English to me, and never pulled this stunt.

Actually there was one lad who did use Welsh, but his english was so poor I couldn't understand him, and my then BF used to translate for me!

Do they all know me - Hi {waves} Well that's so funny cos my Mum and Dad are Irish. You give your nationality a bad name. I assume you are a Scot. There are a lot of biggots up there but thankfully I know lots of lovely ones as well so I don't generalise - unlike you.

I don't often get shocked, but come on, really, have you taken a stereo type pill and decided all english whinge about the welsh and Scots????

It's just not happening.

Misicgirl, I'm coming up to Scotland in August! You can't stop me - ner ner! PMSL Tell all your mates to try and stop me - I'll be easy to spot as I am white, of Irish Heritage with a Scottish bloke. See you soon!!

SnaFRanDiso - Nope, Australian. But we are welcome everywhere. I don't hate the English but I don't understand why English people go and live in countries where they know (or don't they?) that they are despised and then complain that the locals aren't friendly.
