To think that 'some' of the Welsh players were down right ignorant yesterday!

I went to watch the match at the millenium stadium with my (welsh) dh. It was amazing and I really wanted Wales to win, it was a fantastic day with great atmosphere.

However when we watched the tv coverage I noticed that half of the team didnt even acknowledge Prince William let alone shake his hand (although team captain and all round nice bloke Ryan Jones did twice ).

Now I know the welsh will say prince william shouldnt be there, but thats the way its working and even though I dont like the Royals myself, i think he's the best of a bad bunch. And if I had to be presented something by one of them I certainly wouldnt turn the other cheek because I have some manners.

I felt embarrassed by their ignorance, it was shameful. I get loads of abuse for being english living here and my general opinion of wales isnt great but this just reinforced the fact that some welsh people continue to be ignorant bigots where the english are concerned

OP posts:
beaniesteve · 16/03/2008 16:50

they switch to welsh after they have said hello, and then continue their conversations with the people they were talking to before? Hardly ignoring him.

Jeeeze

moondog · 16/03/2008 16:52

Ah Hedge, another who flatters herself as being more interesting than she really is.

I have news for you.
99% of people (be they Welsh,Irish,Mongolian or Burmese) don't care who you are, where you are from, and what you do whether it is masturbating with a cucumber, Morris dancing or tussling with Latin in your spare time.

THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY.
Geddit??????

FourPlusOne · 16/03/2008 17:19

It seems to be turning into one of those types of threads again! I really don't think that the team were ignoring him on purpose. They were euphoric and exhausted (after playing really well ) and were all just shaking one or two hands each. Also being rushed through. The ones who 'appeared' to be turning their backs to him were turning to face the crowd, their supporters, to show their medals and take it all in.

I really don't think that the team were making any type of political statement, that is another issue that I don't think any of them were bothered about addressing at that particular moment! Prince William is future prince of Wales (in title), is an official parton of the WRU, yet is known to be an England supporter.

Not that this is anything to do with the OP, but very few Welsh people deliberately switch languages to make non Welsh speakers feel uncomfortable. I'm sure that a small amount do, but they are rude, and there are rude people in every country.

'DH is welsh and very proudly so, although he's from Ebbw Vale and doesn't actually speak Welsh. We've gone into pubs with him in his Welsh gear before and had people say hello in English and be really nice, until they hear him speak.. then they've switched to welsh and ignored us.'

Am puzzling over the above. You say people were nice to you until they heard him speak. Why do you think that would be the case?

What is wrong with your dh?

beaniesteve · 16/03/2008 17:27

like I said up there somewhere - it does happen, however some English people only eat eggs and bacon for breakfast when they holiday in Spain. Doesn't mean it's a national trait.

I hate when people try to put the Welsh language down by suggesting that people who speak it only do so to either talk about the English or to be rude. There is a big chance that the times you think it has happened to you , you are merely projecting your own prejudice about the language onto innocent Welsh speakers.

Ebbw Vale does not have a huge Welsh speaking population FWIW.

PeachesMcLean · 16/03/2008 17:27

I just don't think it's as common as people suggest. The old "I walked into a shop" chestnut. It's such a cliche. As Fourplusone says, there are rude people in every country. There are so many occasions on MN when people start talking about Wales and straight away come up with the "I walked into a shop" line. I'm not surprised when people like moondog get defensive about it, because it can be really very offensive to have it waved in your face on a regular basis.

try some of the comments in this

beaniesteve · 16/03/2008 17:30

so... in answer to the OP... yes you are being unreasonable to think some of the players were being ignorant.

End of?

WelliesAndPyjamas · 16/03/2008 17:38

NA, beanie! / NO, beanie!
Rwy'n mwynhau y cwffio gormod. / I'm enjoying the scrapping too much.

(Did you see what I did there? I was considerate to all involved on the thread. It's a different story altogether if you walk in to a shop I am using though...)

Louandben · 16/03/2008 17:57

Without getting too involved in the debate, todays Sunday Times sport section brought a wry smile to my (Welsh, living in England) face and even a comment from my English DH - a big photo of England playing, with "Danny Boy" headline, then coverage of the England/Ireland match also splashed all over pages 2&3. If you make it to p4 you will see that - oh, Wales won the Grand Slam by the way. I cant and dont have the anti-English thing that some Welsh people do (like many other posters, I dislike generalisations) but things like this make me understand why some, who believe that Wales/Scotland/Ireland are considered inferior by "arrogant" English people do...

moondog · 16/03/2008 18:00

Exactly Lou.

We have all laughed long and hard about this sort of coverage over the last few weeks.

As I said, the odour of sour grapes fills the air.

Yeah - I think those of us who have been lucky to live in different parts of the British Isles are able to appreciate the diversity and the difference without getting all anti-welsh/English/Scottish about it!

jofeb04 · 16/03/2008 18:18

Firstly, well done Wales.

Secondly, Prince William was there as he is the Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, so he was there on 'business'.

Thirdly, the players had just played their most important game.

So no, not aragant. Shattered, yes. Excited yes. Wanting a beer.... YES

jofeb04 · 16/03/2008 18:19

Noticed that the thread as taken a different direction. Trying to get it back on track.

Wales won the Grand Slam!!
