Christmas Eve Disasters

We are currently at my in-laws: me, DH, and two DDs - 9yo and 5yo. At around 5 this afternoon, just as I was smugly
congratulating myself on avoiding any illnesses or major catastrophes, my 5yo (lightly) bashes her face on the wooden arm of my FILs chair and knocks one front tooth out and another is now loose.

Blood everywhere. DH goes ashen and has to be consoled as he hates the sight of blood. 5yo is screaming her head off, I have blood all over my favourite hoodie. 9yo disappears in tears upstairs. I’m frantically trying to remember if this is a baby tooth or a permanent one! I’m 95% sure it’s a milk tooth but regardless we are booking a trip to the dentist in the New Year! I think I read something about baby teeth being smooth along the bottom (which this is) while grown teeth are jagged?

Anyway, 5yo is now the owner of an adorable lisp and I’ve started in on the Baileys.

Anyone else have any disasters?

We've had a pretty good day, 5 year old has been really excited. Dinner time he isn't hungry, and takes himself off to bed early. Didn't even want to put the mince pie out. Only just got over some awful virus so praying there isn't another one on the way 🫣

Does she need glasses? How did she do it?

Tell us you don’t have kids without telling us you don’t have kids 😁

DragonMama3 · 24/12/2023 21:10

I've three never done that...

LaahDeeDah · 24/12/2023 21:14

Had to muster up the energy to take my kids to a light show last night it went surprisingly well, we all had a lovely time. Then as we got out of the car at home my son closes the door on his index finger. He was a bit hysterical about it. There was blood. We don't think it's broken though so narrowly missed a trip to a&e.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 24/12/2023 21:16

Counting myself lucky that the only thing was husband ignoring the last half hour of the ham glaze and letting the bugger burn. The ham is (probably) still ok under the blackened crust.

Lisbeth50 · 24/12/2023 21:22

Ds1's first Christmas, I spent the whole of Christmas Eve vomiting, then dp the whole of Christmas Day. Feeling better on Boxing Day, we visited relatives and passed the sickness bug onto them. They were all really ill.

PremiumPork · 24/12/2023 21:28

After the entire family being clear of our D&V bug for 48hrs, today we socialised at the church, with elderly relatives etc. We've arrived home and DD has stomach ache again and DH has the shits again. So not only is Christmas with extended family tomorrow probably cancelled, we've also unwittingly exposed everyone to this fucking illness that we thought we were better from. I'm so pissed off, I've been holding us all together through the vomiting stage and I'm just done to be honest. Can't believe it.

Sewaccidentprone · 24/12/2023 21:32

Ds2 fell over at nursery and split his nose open. It was our wedding anniversary and I spent the eve in a&e with him.

same child split head open in eve on holiday in the middle of nowhere (Wales). 90 min drive to nearest hospital 🙄

but I sprained my ankle camping in France, so must run in the family!

if there’s no root then it’ll be a baby tooth. If you every see a child mouth X-ray it’s weird as you see the baby teeth, then all the adult teeth directly on top of them in the gums.

hope everything is ok now.

MissHoollie · 24/12/2023 21:38

We've had a few!
6 year old has scarlet fever a few days before Xmas ..penicillin and was on th mend.
Xmas Day hubbie and I woke up I'll and 9 week old too
All had to go to our of hours GP.

Another year woke up on Xmas Eve to th lovely sound of 8 year old vomiting ..20.mins later the 3 year old joined in.
I have emmetrophobia!
They were luckily fine to enjoy Xmas Day phew

toomanyleggings · 24/12/2023 21:42

Poor you op. Our evening hasn’t been great but no blood so far. So much pressure to make it all magical. Hope tomorrow is better for you

Timeturnerplease · 24/12/2023 21:46

DD1 threw up on Wednesday night and wasn’t right for the next two days, exhausted and diarrhoea. DD2 repeated the process, starting on Friday night. It would appear that I now have the shits 🤦🏻‍♀️

I wouldn’t mind so much, but someone was clearly ill at DD1’s 5th birthday party at the end of November, because most of her class were off two days later with a bug. Surely two sick bugs in a month should not be possible!

Lemonandlime123 · 24/12/2023 21:56

I've just managed to get my 4 year old to bed after an hour of screaming about her ear (hopefully not an ear infection on the way).

We've got both our DDs bikes for Christmas and DH has of course left putting them together until this evening, despite having them over a month. He's also left loads of pieces at his workshop so is just off for an hour round trip! 😳

TheUltima · 24/12/2023 21:59

Last year husband went for a bike ride, fell off and broke his ankle on xmas eve. I had to drive out to the middle of bloody nowhere and collect him and then sat in A&E for hours 🙄

SpringleDingle · 24/12/2023 22:12

When DD was 11 months old we got winter vomiting virus and spent Xmas eve, day and Boxing Day passing baby back and forth and taking it in turns to spew. My lovely parents dropped off food (we had nothing as had planned on visiting them for Xmas) which we put in the fridge and threw out a week later. I lost nearly a stone that Xmas 😂

inappropriateraspberry · 24/12/2023 22:44

Last year DS4 (at the time) had worms so was struggling to sleep. My daughter's giant wooden doll house had no fixings so had to cobble it together with screws we had. Wed had a mad dash to get a bike for DS as we'd been let down last minute. It was all very stressful and I don't think I got to bed until 2am!
Am currently waiting for DD to fall asleep. She's a night owl and will probably take ages.

christmaspawpaws · 24/12/2023 22:46

DragonMama3 · 24/12/2023 21:10

I've three never done that...

Even some of us as adults are just clumsy
I broke my ankle getting out of bed
Broke my other ankle falling down two flights of stairs
Fell down a manhole
Needed emergency spinal surgery and still no idea what I did

And I already wear glasses...

BabyElf · 24/12/2023 23:04

I accidentally broke our shower this evening and it won't turn off. DH is very handy and can't even isolate it because of the stupid design, so we've had to turn the whole water off for the house. Thankfully not cooking tomorrow as we are booked to go out!

TinselTittz · 24/12/2023 23:11

I bought a microwave specifically for Christmas because we have people coming for Christmas and it's fucking broken. So now I need to ask my mother who is coming tomorrow afternoon (vicar) to bring hers 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I got pre prepped veg etc that needs a microwave because DH and I are both working tomorrow morning.

Might I add it's been working for 4 fucking weeks and now on Christmas Eve it's broken...

PandaCory · 24/12/2023 23:22

That’ll be a lovely story to retell in years to come OP! “Remember that Christmas you knocked a tooth out…”

No disasters here (touch wood) but as I was putting my 6 yr old to bed, he was telling me he can’t wait until he gets to sleep in the ‘big bed’ (my bed). I asked when that was going to be and he happily explained “when you and Daddy die and this is my house”.

Mumtofourandnomore · 24/12/2023 23:50

@Duckfeather if it helps at all, my son lost a front adult tooth when he was nine and fell off his bike at high speed - it was awful and couldn’t be fixed, he was lucky not to lose the other too. You would know if it was an adult tooth, it’s completely different and it’s huge - the root is bigger than the tooth.

It’s still unpleasant for your dd, I hope tomorrow is a better day for you both xx

Mrsmch123 · 24/12/2023 23:59

Spent 2 hours on hold to nhs 24. Get a call back to go to out of hours In 2 hours time. Get there and a drs called in sick so they are running behind......3 hours behind appointment time. Finally get seen and my 2 year old has tonsillitis🥺 get antibiotics and sent on our way. Get home 2 hours after his bedtime, he's overtiered. Try to give him his medicine. It tastes like absolute shit😅he spits majority of it out. Then spews. Ohhh and he announced very loudly in the quiet waiting room of ooh several times that he needed to fart 💨 and needed a poo 😳he did not, he wanted to go play with the water in the toilet😂😅

Duckfeather · 25/12/2023 00:04

Thanks @Mumtofourandnomore although that’s awful for your DS and you - sounds really traumatic.

DDs tooth was small and definitely no root. I’ve just got a bit of a weird thing about teeth and dentists as a whole so I do tend to second guess myself!

She was absolutely fine before going to bed, even ended up consoling her big sister saying she was fine and there’s no need to cry 😂

FairyTaleOfDudley · 25/12/2023 00:04

Our oven totally conked out on Xmas eve last year. Ended up portioning up the turkey to cook in the slow cooker over h night and doing everything else on the bbq!

ladygindiva · 25/12/2023 00:05

I've had a child with a nosebleed and another one shitting the bed in the last hour.

Silverblue1985 · 25/12/2023 00:07

Sone years ago, I got caught up travelling to see my family in Germany in the wrong kind of snow with all Eurostars cancelled for multiple days. I ended up being able to travel on 23rd, leaving to London before 6am, then stuck in the mahoosive queue in and around St Oancras. Finally got my tickets at just after midday for a train after 4pm, meaning I would miss the last train to Germany. On calling my DM she said she’d pick me up in Brussels. I got to Brussels, called her - she had no clue where she was, but apparently there were a lot of trees around 🙈 Time passed and she couldn’t find the station. At about 10pm I was desperate (those who have been to Brussels-MIDI know it’s not a station that feels or is safe…) when a woman overheard my desperate attempts to work out where my mother was. She approached me saying she think she knew and would drive me there. I probably did the most stupid thing in my life and went along! All ends well, she took me there, my mother WAS there and we got home to my DM’s at gone 3am. Christmas Eve is the main event in Germany and let’s just say we all just wanted to get over with it and sleep! …. I then called my DH late 24th who had to work and was driving up to see his DB for Christmas (good four hour drive). He was going to fly out to Germany on 26th and go to the airport directly from his DB. He ended up spending Christmas Day driving back home instead as he forgot his passport 😂
